Objectives

Duration: 10 - 15 minutes

This stage aims to establish a clear understanding of the main objectives of the lesson, guiding both the teacher and the students on the specific skills that will be developed. The goal is for students to apply dilution concepts practically and contextually, using digital tools and developing collaborative and technological competencies.

Main Objectives

1. Understand the concept of dilution and how it affects the concentration of a solution.

2. Develop the skill to calculate the concentration of substances after dilution, considering different volumes of solvent.

3. Apply these calculations in practical situations and everyday contexts.

Side Objectives

  1. Familiarize with digital tools that facilitate the calculation and visualization of dilutions.
  2. Encourage teamwork and collaborative problem-solving.

Introduction

Duration: 15 - 20 minutes

The purpose of this stage is to activate students' prior knowledge and engage them from the beginning of the lesson, establishing a connection between the studied topic and practical application in daily life. By seeking interesting facts, students develop their research skills and begin to establish a contextual foundation for the lesson, while the initial debate promotes the exchange of ideas and critical thinking.

Warming Up

To start the lesson on solution dilution, briefly explain that dilution is a process involving the addition of a solvent to a solution to decrease the concentration of the solute. Then, instruct students to use their cell phones to look for an interesting or curious fact about dilution in everyday situations, such as in beverage preparation or cleaning product use. Encourage them to share these facts with the class, promoting a collaborative and interactive learning environment.

Initial Reflections

1. What is dilution and why is it important in different everyday contexts?

2. How does adding solvent to a solution affect the concentration of the solute?

3. What are some practical examples of dilution that you found in your research?

4. How do you calculate the new concentration of a solution after dilution?

5. What digital tools can help visualize and calculate dilutions?

Development

Duration: 70 - 80 minutes

This stage aims to deepen students' knowledge of dilution through practical and contextual activities that use digital tools. It encourages the development of collaborative and technological skills, engaging students in active and meaningful learning.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended that only one of the suggested activities be carried out

Activity 1 - Chemical Influencers 

> Duration: 60 - 70 minutes

- Objective: Engage students by applying dilution concepts in a popular and accessible format, using social media platforms to promote active and creative learning.

- Description: Students will create a series of stories on Instagram or TikTok, explaining and demonstrating the process of diluting solutions in a creative and accessible way. The idea is for them to imagine themselves as digital science influencers, using language and presentation styles that resonate with a young and modern audience.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of up to 5 people.

  • Instruct students to plan a series of 5 to 7 stories or short videos that explain the concept of dilution, show the step-by-step process, and apply concentration calculations.

  • Encourage them to use editing tools, filters, and visual effects to make the stories/videos more appealing.

  • One of the stories/videos must include a practical example, such as diluting juice or preparing a cleaning product.

  • Each group will present their stories/videos to the class, explaining their choices and the concepts involved.

  • Students should use popular hashtags related to the topic to better contextualize the activity.

Activity 2 - Chemical Escape Room 里

> Duration: 60 - 70 minutes

- Objective: Provide a playful and collaborative experience where students apply dilution knowledge to solve problems in a gamified scenario.

- Description: Students will participate in a digital escape game, where they will solve a series of puzzles related to solution dilution to 'escape' from a virtual room. Each solved puzzle will unlock a new clue until all challenges are completed.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of up to 5 people.

  • Each group will access a pre-selected digital escape room website/platform where the puzzles are set up.

  • The puzzles will involve dilution calculations, interpreting concentration graphs, and solving practical problems.

  • Students will need to collaborate to solve each puzzle, discussing strategies and applying their knowledge of dilutions.

  • Upon completing the game, each group will discuss with the teacher and the class the skills developed and challenges encountered during the activity.

Activity 3 - Dilution in Action in the Virtual Lab 離

> Duration: 60 - 70 minutes

- Objective: Allow students to experience the concept of dilution in a safe and controlled environment, using technological tools to investigate and visualize chemical processes.

- Description: Students will use a virtual lab simulator to conduct dilution experiments. The activity involves preparing solutions with different concentrations and analyzing the results using simulation technology.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of up to 5 people.

  • Each group will access the virtual lab platform (such as PhET Interactive Simulations).

  • Students will follow the instructions in the simulator to prepare solutions with different concentrations and perform dilutions.

  • Each group will record the results obtained and compare them with theoretical calculations.

  • Students will prepare a digital report with graphs and tables illustrating their findings.

  • At the end, each group will present their results and reflections on the activity to the class.

Feedback

Duration: 15 - 20 minutes

The purpose of this stage is to promote critical and collaborative reflection on the activities carried out, allowing students to consolidate their learning by sharing their experiences and receiving constructive feedback. Group discussion enriches the understanding of concepts by exposing different perspectives and problem-solving strategies.

Group Discussion

Promote a group discussion with all students, where groups share what they learned while performing the activities and their conclusions. To introduce the conversation, suggest that each group briefly explains the activity they carried out (Chemical Influencers, Chemical Escape Room, or Virtual Lab) and the main challenges and discoveries made during the process. Encourage students to discuss how digital tools facilitated or complicated their understanding of dilution concepts.

Reflections

1. What were the main difficulties encountered when applying dilution concepts in the practical activities? 2. How did the digital tools used contribute to understanding the dilution concepts? 3. In what ways can the activities carried out be connected to everyday situations involving dilution?

360° Feedback

Instruct students to conduct a 360° feedback session where each student receives feedback from the other group members they worked with. Guide the class to ensure that the feedback is constructive and respectful, highlighting each participant's strengths and suggesting areas for improvement. Encourage phrases like 'I liked how you explained...' or 'Next time, you might consider...'. This exercise should be conducted orally in small circles to ensure greater participation.

Conclusion

Duration: 10 - 15 minutes

The purpose of this stage is to consolidate students' learning in an engaging and memorable way. A creative summary reinforces the main concepts, while the connection with the modern world and practical applications highlight the relevance of the content. This helps solidify the importance of the studied topic, encouraging students to apply this knowledge in their daily lives.

Summary

Summary: Dilution in a Science Capsule!  Imagine you have a super concentrated juice. If you add water, you're making a dilution! In Chemistry, we dilute to reduce the concentration of a substance in a solution. This affects the amount of solute (the substance you are diluting) per unit of volume. We calculate this with the formula C1V1 = C2V2 where C is the concentration and V is the volume before and after dilution. During this lesson, we explored these ideas in a practical and fun way!

World Connection

Today's lesson connects with the modern world through the use of social media and digital technology. Using Instagram or TikTok to create educational content and virtual lab applications are ways to make learning more engaging and applicable to everyday life. Additionally, the idea of the Digital Escape Room brings an element of gamification that is highly present in the current learning and entertainment dynamic.

Practical Application

Understanding dilution is essential in daily life, whether for preparing beverages, medications, or cleaning products accurately and safely. Knowing how to calculate concentration after dilution can help us make these preparations efficiently and economically. Furthermore, these skills are fundamental in various professions, from chemical engineering to medicine.
