Cohesion and Clarify

Contextualization

Welcome students! Today we're going to delve into the world of language use and its two key concepts: Cohesion and Clarity. These two principles are not only fundamental to the structure of any language, but they also play a significant role in effective communication.

Cohesion, the first topic of our discussion, refers to the way sentences and paragraphs are connected to each other. It ensures that our writing makes sense as a whole, not just as a collection of individual sentences. Clarity, on the other hand, is all about making sure that our message is easily understood by the reader. It involves using clear, concise, and precise language, and structuring our writing in a logical and coherent manner.

In the real world, these principles are applicable in a variety of contexts. Whether you're writing an essay, a business report, a news article, or even a casual email, you need to make sure that your writing is cohesive and clear. This is because, if your writing is not cohesive, it can be difficult for the reader to understand your message. And if it's not clear, your reader might misunderstand your message or not understand it at all.

To help you understand these concepts better, we've provided some resources for you to explore:

  1. "Cohesion and Clarity in Writing" by The Writing Center, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This resource explains the concepts of cohesion and clarity in writing and gives examples of how to achieve them. Link to the resource

  2. "Cohesion and Clarity" by The Writing Lab & The OWL at Purdue University. This resource provides detailed information about cohesion and clarity, including how to achieve them in your writing. Link to the resource

  3. "Cohesion and Clarity" by Khan Academy. This video explains the concepts of cohesion and clarity and gives examples of how to use them in your writing. Link to the video

Make sure to explore these resources thoroughly and note down any questions or doubts that you may have. We'll be discussing these in our next class. Happy learning!

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Enhancing Cohesion and Clarity in a Collaborative Story

Objective of the Project:

The main goal of this project is to deepen students' understanding of cohesion and clarity in written communication. Through a collaborative story writing activity, students will learn to apply these principles practically. They will also develop skills in collaboration, creativity, problem-solving, and time management.

Detailed Description of the Project:

In groups of 3 to 5, students will create a short story (approximately 500 words) based on a prompt provided by the teacher. The story should demonstrate a strong sense of cohesion and clarity. Cohesion should be achieved through the logical sequencing of events and the use of appropriate transition words. Clarity should be achieved through the use of clear and precise language, and the avoidance of ambiguous or confusing statements.

Necessary Materials:

  • Writing materials (paper, pens, pencils, erasers).
  • Access to a word processing software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Google Docs).

Detailed Step-by-Step for Carrying Out the Activity:

  1. Group Formation (15 minutes): Form groups of 3 to 5 students.

  2. Prompt Assignment (10 minutes): Assign a story prompt to each group. The prompt should be broad enough to allow for creativity, but specific enough to guide the story's plot.

  3. Brainstorming (20 minutes): Each group should brainstorm ideas for their story based on the given prompt. Encourage discussion and collaboration within the group.

  4. Outline Creation (15 minutes): Once the story's direction is decided, the group should create an outline. The outline should include the main events of the story and their logical sequence.

  5. Story Writing (60 minutes): Using the outline as a guide, the group should write the story. Emphasize the importance of coherence and clarity throughout the writing process.

  6. Revision (30 minutes): After writing the first draft, the group should revise their story. They should look for areas where the story's cohesion or clarity can be improved and make the necessary changes.

  7. Finalization (30 minutes): Once the revisions are done, the group should finalize their story.

  8. Presentation and Reflection (30 minutes): Each group will present their story to the class and discuss the challenges they faced in maintaining cohesion and clarity.

Project Deliverables:

  1. Written Story: The final version of the group's short story should be submitted. This should demonstrate the students' understanding and application of the principles of cohesion and clarity.

  2. Group Report: A report detailing the group's collaboration process, their understanding of cohesion and clarity, and how they applied these principles in their story. The report should be structured in the following manner:

    • Introduction: Briefly introduce the story's plot and the concepts of cohesion and clarity. Also, state the objective of the project.

    • Development: Discuss in detail how the group worked together on the project. Explain the brainstorming process, the creation of the outline, the writing and revision process, and how the final version of the story demonstrates cohesion and clarity. Also, discuss any challenges the group faced and how they overcame them.

    • Conclusion: Reflect on the project. Discuss what the group learned about cohesion and clarity through the project and how they think these skills will be valuable in the future.

    • Bibliography: List all the resources the group used during the project, including the story prompt and any online resources.

The project should take each student approximately 12 hours to complete and should be submitted within a week of starting the project. Remember, quality and understanding are more important than the speed of completion. Good luck, and enjoy the journey of creating a cohesive and clear story together!
