Entering the Discovery Portal
 Hello, everyone! Did you know that swimming is one of the oldest sports in the world? In Egyptian documents dating back to around 2500 BC, we already have records of people practicing swimming. Not to mention the illustrations found in the caves of swimmers in Sweden from 2000 BC! 
Swimming is the exercise that most closely approaches scientific perfection.

Exploring the Surface
Swimming is a complete and fascinating sport that combines strength, endurance, and technique. It is known not only for its numerous health benefits but also for its rich and engaging history. From ancient civilizations to modern Olympic competitions, swimming has evolved from a survival skill to a high-performance sport practiced by millions of people around the world.
Do you care about physical health? Great! Swimming is ideal for developing physical conditioning without negatively impacting the joints. It works all muscle groups, helps improve cardiovascular capacity, and even aids in stress relief. But swimming is much more than just exercise; it is also a form of leisure and well-being that can be practiced at any age.
In this chapter, we will dive headfirst into everything related to swimming: we will learn about the main modalities, the most popular styles, and the history that shaped this sport. Get ready to discover an underwater world full of challenges, achievements, and, above all, a lot of fun! ‍♂️
Swimming Styles
When you think of swimming, you might just picture someone gliding through the water as if they were born a fish. But believe me, there are many ways to swim! Let's start with the Crawl, also known as freestyle. Imagine you’re a fast and happy dolphin, that’s the Crawl! It’s the fastest style and probably the most popular. The swimmer moves their arms alternately while kicking their legs as if trying to escape a shark (but without the fear part).
Now, the style that makes us look like we’re relaxing on our backs while actually swimming at full speed: the Backstroke. It’s practically swimming's version of 'I don’t care about anything, I’m amazing'. In this style, the swimmer is on their back, moving their arms alternately and kicking their feet with joy. It’s like doing jumping jacks, only in the water. Want to look amazing without losing your breath? Try the Backstroke!
Breaststroke, on the other hand, is the zen style of frogs. Imagine yourself as a very zen frog, living your best life while making smooth pulling and pushing movements with your legs and arms. It's a bit slower, but no less effective. And finally, we have the Butterfly, the most technical of them all, and probably the one that makes you look like a cartoon hero. With coordinated arm movements, the swimmer seems to fly over the water like – guess what – a butterfly! But beware, this style is a real test of endurance.
Proposed Activity: Home Swimmer
Choose one of the swimming styles mentioned above and search for a video on YouTube of a professional athlete demonstrating that style. Then, record a short video of yourself explaining (or trying to execute) that style at home, whether in the living room, yard, or even in a pool if you have one! Post the video in the class WhatsApp group and see what your classmates think.
Competition Modalities
Let’s talk about cheering and thrilling! Competitive swimming is a world apart, with various modalities so you never get tired of watching (or participating). We start with freestyle races, where all that matters is being the fastest. Forget complicated rules; the idea here is: 'just swim as fast as you can.'
Next, we have medley races. It’s like a fruit salad of swimming styles! The swimmer must compete in four different styles in the same race: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle. It’s like watching a marathon where runners change outfits in the middle of the race. So exciting!
Finally, we can't forget about relays. Ah, relays! If an individual race is thrilling, imagine an entire team striving to be the fastest. Each swimmer on the team must complete a part of the race before 'passing the baton' (or, in this case, the pool) to the next swimmer. It’s like a relay race on the track, only with water and a lot more splashes.
Proposed Activity: Record Detective
Research a recent swimming competition, such as the Olympics or the World Swimming Championships. Choose a modality that caught your attention and write a brief summary of the latest winners and records. Post your summary in the class forum to share your findings.
History of Swimming
Believe it or not, swimming is not just an invention of the modern era (or Olympic swimmers). In fact, our ancestors have been in the water for thousands of years. The ancient Egyptians, for example, not only built pyramids; they also swam as if there were no tomorrow, with records dating back to around 2500 BC.
Ah, the good old days of Ancient Greece! Back then, the Greeks didn’t just philosophize; they also competed in swimming during their Olympic Games. It was like mixing Plato with Michael Phelps! Even in Ancient Japan, swimming was a common practice for both fun and military training. That’s right, the samurai also swam!
And of course, we can't forget the evolution of swimming as a modern sport. In the 19th century, swimming competitions began to gain popularity in Europe, and in 1896, swimming was introduced in the modern Olympic Games. Since then, we've seen icons emerge like Johnny Weissmuller, who not only shone in the pools but also on the big screen as Tarzan. This sport is rooted in our history!
Proposed Activity: Aquatic Timeline
Create a visual timeline highlighting the major events and figures in the history of swimming. You can use paper and colored pens to draw or create digitally using tools like Canva. Post a photo or screenshot of your timeline in the class forum so we can admire your artistic and historical talents!
Benefits of Swimming
Did you know that swimming is practically a magic potion for your health? Firstly, it’s a mega cardiovascular workout. Imagine running a marathon, but instead of sweating like a cactus in the desert, you’re refreshing yourself in the pool. Your heart and lungs work like never before!
Moreover, swimming is a low-impact exercise. This means that your joints won’t complain and ask for a refund at the end of the day. Therefore, it’s perfect for people of all ages, from babies to seniors. Want to engage in a physical activity without looking like a stiff robot? Dive into swimming!
And we can't forget about mental well-being. Swimming can be extremely relaxing and an excellent remedy for stress. Ever heard of floatation therapy? Well, swimming has a similar effect. It's you and the water, in perfect harmony, with the added advantage of not looking like a supervolcano on the verge of eruption.
Proposed Activity: Swimming for Health
Research and choose a specific benefit of swimming that you find the most interesting or relevant to you. Make a short video (or text if you prefer) explaining why this benefit caught your attention and how it can improve people's health. Share it in the class WhatsApp group.
