Exploring Eastern Art: A Journey Through Japanese Culture

Entering the Discovery Portal

️ "Art is not what you see, but what you make others see." — Edgar Degas. The phrase from the famous French Impressionist painter may be about Western art, but it fits perfectly with what we will do as we delve into Eastern art, especially Japanese art, known for its unique techniques and its sublime way of conveying feelings and stories through simplicity and meticulous details.

Quizz: 樂 Have you ever thought about how a simple painting like a black and white sumi-e can evoke emotions as powerful as a piece full of vibrant colors? What is it about these Japanese techniques that fascinates us so much to this day? 

Exploring the Surface

 Eastern art, especially Japanese art, is one of the most fascinating and respected forms of cultural expression in the world. It is rich in history, technique, and symbolism, offering a unique window into a better understanding of Japanese culture and its influence on other parts of the world. Today, we will explore styles such as ukiyo-e, sumi-e, and calligraphy, each representing a distinct and profound view of Japanese aesthetics. We will discover how these styles are not just artistic techniques but true reflections of Japanese philosophy and values. 

 Ukiyo-e, or 'images of the floating world', is a printmaking style that flourished in Japan between the 17th and 19th centuries. This style captured scenes of everyday life, landscapes, and famous figures like kabuki actors and courtesans. Ukiyo-e not only represents the ephemeral beauty of the world but also served as an effective way to democratize art, making it accessible to a broader population. 

 On the other hand, sumi-e, or ink painting, is recognized for its simplicity and minimalist elegance. With few and precise brushstrokes, artists capture the essence of their subject, always seeking a balance between what is shown and what is suggested. Japanese calligraphy, in turn, transforms writing into an art form full of symbolism and aesthetics. Each stroke in calligraphy carries intention and purpose, with a deep spiritual and philosophical connection. ️

Ukiyo-e: The Snapchat of the Samurai

 Can you imagine if samurais had Snapchat?  Well, ukiyo-e was basically that! Emerging between the 17th and 19th centuries, ukiyo-e means 'images of the floating world'. And no, it has nothing to do with floating ghosts. This art style was a true vintage social network, capturing Japanese daily life: landscapes, kabuki actors, courtesans, and more. It was like Netflix and Instagram mixed together in super detailed woodblock prints. 

Ukiyo-e prints were produced in large quantities, helping to democratize art. Before that, owning a piece of art was as expensive as buying an iPhone. With ukiyo-e, everyone could have a piece of art at home. Furthermore, these prints influenced famous Western artists, such as Van Gogh. So, when you admire an Impressionist painting, know that a touch of Japanese art might be there. 

And of course, we cannot forget the vibrant colors and intricate details that make ukiyo-e a visual explosion. If you think Instagram's Valencia filter is brilliant, try appreciating an ukiyo-e! Each piece is a dive into a universe where characters seem to jump off the page and everyday scenes come to life in a way that only Japanese art can. 

Proposed Activity: My Modern Ukiyo-e

How about creating your own digital ukiyo-e? Using graphic design apps (like Canva or Paint), develop a scene inspired by your daily life, but in the style of ukiyo-e. Think about vibrant colors and intricate details. Afterward, share your masterpiece in the class WhatsApp group or in the classroom forum. Who knows, you might become the next Katsushika Hokusai!

Sumi-e: Minimalism at the Tip of the Brush

 If you think a painting needs a million colors to be good, sumi-e is here to prove the opposite. Imagine an art ninja, who with a few precise brush strokes is capable of capturing the essence of the world. This is sumi-e! 

Originating in China, sumi-e was adopted by the Japanese and transformed into a zen art, full of spirituality and philosophy. No random splashes here; every stroke is extremely calculated, as if the artist were in a motor coordination game where you can only make one mistake. The goal is to convey the essence of the represented object, leaving aside superfluous details. It is minimalism in its purest and most elegant form. 

If you ever tried to make 'simplistic drawings' and were considered lazy, you can say you were training to become a master of sumi-e! Using black ink on white paper, contrast and shadow are as important as each brushstroke. Imagine being able to express the serenity of a landscape with just a few strokes? That is sumi-e! ️

Proposed Activity: My Simple Sumi-e

It's time to unleash the art ninja within you! Grab a piece of paper and a pen (or digital sumi-e, if you prefer!). Choose a simple object like a plant or an animal and try to capture its essence with the fewest strokes possible. Post your artwork in the class WhatsApp group or in the classroom forum and see how less can be more.

Japanese Calligraphy: Writing Poetry with the Soul

️ Writing can be much more than just forming words, especially in Japanese calligraphy. Each stroke is a dance, each word is a work of art. Imagine if your doodles in your school notebook were as admired and meaningful as a famous painting. Well, this is possible if you master Japanese calligraphy! ️

Japanese calligraphy, or 'shodō', is not just about writing beautiful letters. It is a fusion of technique and spirit. The zen approach is clear: each stroke must be made with meditation and precise manifestation of intention. The goal is to achieve harmony between what is written and how it is written. It's as if each word were a visual poem. 

If you ever sent a "lol" on WhatsApp and felt a little guilty, know that in Japanese calligraphy, brevity is a virtue. Each ideogram carries deep meanings and is drawn with a dedication that would make your math teacher's ruler envious. 

Proposed Activity: My Words, My Art

Let's transform your handwriting into art! Choose a word or phrase that has special meaning to you and try to represent it using a Japanese-inspired calligraphy style. You can use a pen, brush, or even graphic design apps. Share it in the class WhatsApp group or in the classroom forum with a brief explanation of the meaning behind your work.

Influence of Japanese Art in the West: From Van Gogh to Super Mario

 Get ready for a journey through time and space! Japanese art has influenced Western artists in ways you can't even imagine. From the stars of the Impressionist stage, such as Van Gogh, to the animations you love binge-watching on Netflix, Japanese art has left its indelible mark on the Western world. 

Van Gogh and Monet were among the first Westerners to be captivated by ukiyo-e prints. They were basically the pre-internet version of sharing and re-pinning Japanese works even before social media existed. This admiration reflected in their own works, introducing vibrant colors and compositions reminiscent of Japanese landscapes and everyday scenes. 

But the influence didn't stop there. Japan also left its mark on modern Western pop culture. Think of anime, video games, and even fashion. From the minimalist and detailed aesthetics of cartoons to the visual complexity in games, Japanese art has shaped many of the aesthetics we consume today. So, the next time you marvel at an episode of Naruto or a level of Super Mario, remember: you're appreciating a long tradition of Japanese art and culture. 

Proposed Activity: Cultural Detective

Research a work by a Western artist influenced by Japanese art or a current pop culture element inspired by Japan. It can be a painting, a comic, a game, anything you want! Share your analysis in the class WhatsApp group or in the classroom forum and explain which elements of Japanese art you found.
