Games and Fun: Hopscotch

Objectives (5 - 7 minutes)

  1. Get to Know Hopscotch: Introduce and explain hopscotch as a popular game, emphasizing the basic rules and the importance of respecting the game rules and players.

  2. Develop Motor Coordination: Propose practical activities to help students develop motor coordination, such as jumping and maintaining balance in the narrow spaces of hopscotch.

  3. Promote Socialization and Respect: Stimulate interaction among students during the game, promoting socialization and respect for differences, both in carrying out activities and in waiting for their turn to play.

Introduction (10 - 12 minutes)

  1. Content Review: The teacher starts the lesson by reminding students about the importance of movement, play, and games for physical and social development. Students can be asked to share their favorite games and what positive aspects they bring to them.

  2. Problem Situations: The teacher presents two situations that will arouse students' curiosity and prepare them for the lesson's theme:

    • 'Have you ever thought about how important it is to jump on one foot and maintain balance? What if we needed to do that to reach a specific place?'
    • 'What if we had to jump in marked spaces on the ground to accomplish a mission, how would that be?'
  3. Contextualization: The teacher explains that games and play are very important because they help develop physical and social skills. He also highlights that many games they know today were invented by children from other generations, like hopscotch, which is the game they will learn and play that day.

  4. Capturing Students' Attention: To spark students' interest, the teacher can mention that hopscotch is a game that has existed for hundreds of years and was very popular among children in the past. Additionally, he can share some curiosities, such as:

    • 'Did you know that hopscotch was a way for children in the past to train motor coordination and balance?'
    • 'And that in the past, in Europe, people believed that playing hopscotch brought good luck?'
  5. Introduction to the Topic: The teacher then introduces the hopscotch topic, explaining that it is a game that involves jumping on one foot, maintaining balance, and following rules. He shows an image or drawing of a hopscotch on the board and asks students if they have seen or played that game before. Then, he connects the proposed activity with the concepts of motor coordination and respect for rules and peers.

Development (20 - 25 minutes)

  1. Explanation about Hopscotch: The teacher starts the lesson development by explaining in detail about hopscotch. He draws or projects an image of a hopscotch on the board and demonstrates how the game is played, following the basic rules. The teacher should emphasize the sequential order of the numbers, jumping on one foot, and the balance needed to complete the game. (5 minutes)

  2. Imitation Games: The teacher proposes two imitation games that will help prepare students for playing hopscotch.

    • Frog Jump: Students must jump like frogs, keeping their hands on their knees and feet together. The teacher can increase the challenge by asking students to jump from one place to another, simulating the spaces of hopscotch.
    • Bunny Hop: Students must hop like bunnies, keeping their hands on their ears and feet together. The teacher can ask students to jump on one foot, alternating feet, to simulate the hop in hopscotch. These games are important to warm up the muscles and help students get used to jumping on one foot and the balance needed for hopscotch. (10 - 12 minutes)
  3. Hopscotch Practice: The teacher organizes students into groups of up to five members and distributes sheets of paper or adhesive tape so they can draw their 'hopscotches' on the patio or classroom floor. Then, students play hopscotch, following the rules presented earlier. The teacher circulates among the groups, guiding and assisting when necessary. (10 - 12 minutes)

Feedback (8 - 10 minutes)

  1. Group Discussion: The teacher gathers all students and promotes a group discussion about the experience of playing hopscotch. He asks questions like 'What did you think of hopscotch? Was it easy or difficult? Why?' and 'How did you feel jumping on one foot and maintaining balance?' The teacher encourages all students to share their opinions and feelings, fostering an environment of respect and empathy. (3 - 4 minutes)

  2. Connection with Theory: The teacher then makes the connection between hopscotch practice and the skills they are developing. He reinforces the importance of motor coordination, balance, and respect for rules and peers. The teacher can ask 'What skills do you think you are developing by playing hopscotch?' and 'How does the hopscotch game help us understand the importance of respecting rules and peers?' (3 - 4 minutes)

  3. Final Reflection: To conclude, the teacher proposes a moment of individual reflection. He asks two simple questions that students should answer mentally:

    • 'What was the most fun part of hopscotch for you?'
    • 'What did you learn from hopscotch that can be useful in other situations?' The teacher gives a minute for students to think about the answers. Then, he can ask some students to share their reflections with the class, if they are comfortable. (2 minutes)
  4. Activity Closure: The teacher concludes the activity by thanking everyone's participation and reinforcing that hopscotch is a fun game they can play at home or with friends. He also emphasizes that, besides the fun, the game helps develop important life skills. (1 minute)

Conclusion (5 - 7 minutes)

  1. Summary of Contents: The teacher reviews the main points of the lesson, reinforcing what students learned about hopscotch. He highlights the game rules, the importance of balance and motor coordination, and how hopscotch helps develop respect for rules and peers. The teacher can do this interactively by asking students to remember and share what they learned. (2 - 3 minutes)

  2. Connection between Theory and Practice: The teacher explains how the lesson connected theory (knowledge about hopscotch, its rules, and benefits) with practice (playing hopscotch and imitation games). He emphasizes how theory helped students better understand practice and how practice helped reinforce the understanding of theory. The teacher can give concrete examples of how this happened during the lesson. (1 - 2 minutes)

  3. Extra Materials: The teacher suggests extra materials for students to explore at home, as a way to deepen their knowledge about hopscotch and continue practicing the skills developed. These materials may include:

    • Videos: The teacher can recommend short videos that demonstrate how to play hopscotch and tell a bit of the game's history.
    • Balance Games: The teacher can suggest other games or activities that help develop balance and motor coordination, such as jumping rope, circle dances, among others. The teacher can share these resources with students' parents so they can assist in accessing and exploring the materials at home. (1 - 2 minutes)
  4. Subject Importance: Finally, the teacher emphasizes the importance of what was learned in the lesson for students' daily lives. He explains that, besides being a fun game, hopscotch helps develop fundamental skills, such as balance, motor coordination, and respect for rules and peers. Additionally, the teacher highlights that hopscotch is an activity that can be practiced in different spaces, not requiring specific materials, making it accessible to most children. (1 minute)
