Required MaterialsToy clocks, Printed maps, Clues for treasure hunt, Poster boards, Colored pens, Stickers, Glue, Treasure (box of sweets), Blank calendars

Assumptions: This Active Lesson Plan assumes: a 100-minute class, prior student study with both the Book and the start of Project development, and that only one activity (among the three suggested) will be chosen to be conducted during the class, as each activity is designed to take up a significant portion of the available time.

Objectives

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The Objectives stage is fundamental to establish the focus of the lesson and ensure that both the teacher and students are aligned with the learning goals. By clearly defining the objectives, students are guided on what is expected of them to understand and apply at the end of the lesson. This clarity helps maximize the effectiveness of classroom time, ensuring that all activities are directed towards the development of essential skills related to time measurement.

Main Objectives:

1. Enable students to understand and use time markers, such as clocks and calendars, to measure time and identify hours and days.

2. Develop practical skills so that students can apply their knowledge of time measurement in everyday life, using simple examples and playful activities.

Side Objectives:

  1. Encourage active participation from students throughout the lesson, promoting a collaborative learning environment.

Introduction

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

The Introduction serves to engage students with the theme of the lesson, using problem situations they have likely encountered in daily life to activate prior knowledge. Additionally, by contextualizing the importance of time measurement with curiosities and practical examples, students are encouraged to recognize the relevance of the topic in their lives, increasing interest and motivation to learn.

Problem-Based Situations

1. Imagine you are going to meet a friend at the park at 3 PM. How can you know when it's time to leave the house? Use the clock to find out.

2. You have been invited to a party that starts at 6 PM. If it's currently 2 PM, how much time is left until the party starts? Use the clock to calculate.

Contextualization

Measuring time is essential for organizing our daily activities. Since ancient times, humans have observed the sun, stars, and moon to determine periods of time. Today, we use clocks and calendars to assist us in this task. Curiously, different cultures have developed various methods to measure and mark time, showing the importance and diversity of the concept of time throughout history.

Development

Duration: (75 - 80 minutes)

The Development stage is designed for students to apply their acquired knowledge about time measurement in a practical and playful manner. The proposed activities aim to consolidate students' understanding of the use of clocks and calendars, as well as promote teamwork skills, problem-solving, and creativity. Each activity is structured to be conducted in groups, encouraging collaboration and communication among students.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended to carry out only one of the suggested activities

Activity 1 - Time Treasure Hunt

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Apply knowledge about clocks and telling time in a fun and dynamic context, promoting teamwork and problem-solving.

- Description: Students will be divided into groups of up to 5 people, and each group will receive a map of the 'Time Treasure'. The map will have clues leading to different locations in the school, where a toy clock will be hidden. Each clock will contain a part of a riddle, and the groups will need to collect all parts to decipher the final riddle, which will reveal the location of a 'treasure' (box of sweets).

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of no more than 5 students.

  • Distribute the maps with clues to each group.

  • The groups must follow the clues to find the hidden clocks.

  • Each clock hides a part of a riddle; the groups must collect all parts.

  • Upon completing the riddle, the groups must race to the final location to find the 'treasure'.

  • The first group to decipher the riddle and reach the 'treasure' wins an additional prize.

Activity 2 - Calendar Builders

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Develop understanding of calendars and their application in organizing temporal events, fostering creativity and teamwork.

- Description: In this activity, students will use materials such as poster boards, colored pens, and stickers to create a monthly calendar. They should fill the calendar with important dates, such as birthdays and holidays, and each group will have to collaborate to add events with specific times, learning to differentiate days and hours.

- Instructions:

  • Organize the class into groups of up to 5 students.

  • Distribute the necessary materials for building the calendar.

  • Explain that they should fill the calendar with important dates and specific events.

  • Students must discuss and decide together the correct times for each event.

  • Each group will present their calendar to the class, explaining the dates and events marked.

Activity 3 - Time Detectives

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Deepen students' understanding of the structure of a calendar and how different events are organized within it, promoting logical reasoning and collaboration skills.

- Description: Students, in groups, will receive a 'case' of a whole day missing from the calendar. They will need to use clues such as dates of significant events, seasons of the year, and days of the week to 'reconstruct' the lost day, filling in a blank calendar. The group that correctly fills it in first wins the game.

- Instructions:

  • Divide students into groups of up to 5 people.

  • Provide each group with a set of clues and a blank calendar.

  • Explain that they should use the clues to determine which day is missing from the calendar.

  • Students should discuss in their group and fill in the calendar based on the clues.

  • The first group to correctly complete the day in the calendar wins.

Feedback

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

The purpose of this stage is to consolidate students' learning, allowing them to reflect on the skills acquired and share their experiences. Group discussion helps reinforce knowledge by explaining and hearing different perspectives and solutions, in addition to promoting self-assessment and the ability to express ideas. This collective feedback also serves for the teacher to evaluate students' understanding and identify any points that may need review or reinforcement.

Group Discussion

At the end of the activities, gather all students for a group discussion. Start the conversation by praising everyone's effort and highlighting the importance of collaboration and the correct use of clocks and calendars. Ask each group how they resolved the proposed challenges and what strategies they used. Encourage them to share the difficulties they encountered and how they overcame them.

Key Questions

1. What were the greatest challenges in using clocks and calendars in today's activities?

2. How did collaborating with your peers help solve the problems encountered?

3. Was there any situation where the use of time directly influenced the outcome of the activity?

Conclusion

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The purpose of this stage is to ensure that students have absorbed the main concepts of the lesson and understand their practical application and relevance in daily life. Furthermore, it aims to strengthen the connection between theory and practice, ensuring that students recognize the value of what they have learned and are prepared to use this knowledge effectively. This recap also serves to reinforce students' memory and provide a coherent and instructive closure for the lesson.

Summary

In conclusion, the teacher should summarize the key points covered about measuring time, reinforcing the use of clocks and calendars to identify hours and days. It is essential that students are clear on how to use these tools in their daily lives, whether to arrive punctually for appointments or to plan future events.

Theory Connection

During the lesson, students had the opportunity to connect theory with practice through playful and collaborative activities. Through games like 'Time Treasure Hunt', 'Calendar Builders', and 'Time Detectives', they applied theoretical knowledge in a fun and meaningful way, which facilitates retention of information and a deep understanding of the topic.

Closing

The importance of measuring time in everyday life cannot be underestimated. The effective use of clocks and calendars not only facilitates personal organization but is also crucial in work and study environments. The ability to manage time effectively is a vital skill for success in various areas of life.
