Spanish

Original Teachy

Augmentative and Diminutive

Objectives (5 - 7 minutes)

  1. Understanding the Concept of Augmentative and Diminutive: The main objective of this lesson is to teach students the concept of augmentative and diminutive. They should be able to understand that these are ways to modify words to express a larger or smaller size in relation to the original.

  2. Recognition of Augmentatives and Diminutives in Words: In addition to understanding the concept, students should be able to identify augmentatives and diminutives in words. They should understand that these changes can be made by adding or removing suffixes from words.

  3. Use of Augmentatives and Diminutives in Contexts: Finally, students should be able to use augmentatives and diminutives appropriately in various contexts. They should be able to apply the learned concept to express larger or smaller sizes in relation to the original.

Secondary Objectives:

  • Stimulate Creativity: By creating and using words in the augmentative and diminutive forms, students are encouraged to use their imagination and creativity, making learning more fun and engaging.
  • Develop Linguistic Awareness: By learning about augmentatives and diminutives, students are also developing their awareness of the structure and functioning of the Portuguese language.
  • Promote Interaction and Collaboration: During group activities, students are encouraged to work together, share ideas, and learn from each other.

Introduction (10 - 12 minutes)

  1. Recalling Previous Content: The teacher will start the lesson by reminding students about what a noun and an adjective are. They will propose some interactive questions for students to recall and reinforce these concepts.

  2. Problem Situations: The teacher will propose two problem situations for the students. The first one will be: "How would you call a very, very, very small dog house?". The second situation will be: "And if you found a very, very, very large kitten, how would you call it?".

  3. Contextualization: The teacher will explain that in Portuguese, we have special ways of talking about things that are larger or smaller than normal. These ways are called augmentatives and diminutives. He/she may mention some examples that students may know, such as: "cachorrão" (augmentative of "cachorro") or "gatinho" (diminutive of "gato").

  4. Capturing Students' Attention: The teacher will present two curiosities to capture the students' attention. The first one is that in some regions of Brazil, people use augmentatives and diminutives in a very creative way. For example, instead of saying "cachorrinho", they may say "cachorrino" or "cachorrão". The second curiosity is that in other languages, such as Spanish, there are also augmentatives and diminutives, but they are formed differently.

  5. Introduction of the Topic: Finally, the teacher will introduce the topic of the lesson, explaining that they will learn today how to form and use augmentatives and diminutives in Portuguese. He/she will show that this can be very useful to describe things more accurately and express feelings more subtly.

With this introduction, students will be prepared to delve into the topic of the lesson and start learning about augmentatives and diminutives in a fun and engaging way.

Development (20 - 25 minutes)

  1. Activity: Playing with Augmentatives and Diminutives

    • The teacher should divide the class into small groups.
    • Each group will receive a list of simple words, such as "flor" (flower), "casa" (house), "livro" (book), "amigo" (friend), etc.
    • The group's task will be to create as many augmentatives and diminutives as possible for each word on the list.
    • The teacher should move around the room, assisting the groups and clarifying any doubts that may arise.
  2. Activity: Creating Word Monsters

    • The teacher will propose that students create "word monsters" using augmentatives and diminutives.
    • Each student will receive a sheet of paper and will have to draw a monster. The drawing should contain a word, which can be a simple noun, such as "flor" or "casa".
    • The students' task will be to write the augmentative or diminutive of the word they chose below the monster drawing.
    • The teacher should walk around the room, praising the drawings and encouraging students to use their creativity.
  3. Activity: The Hunt for Words in the Augmentative and Diminutive Forms

    • The teacher will distribute a set of cards containing words written in different sizes and forms.
    • Students will be instructed to find the card that corresponds to the augmentative or diminutive of the word presented on the original card.
    • The teacher can organize this activity as a game, where students who find the pair of cards earn points for their team.
    • The teacher should oversee the game, clarifying any doubts that may arise.

These activities are designed to be fun and engaging, while allowing students to practice the use of augmentatives and diminutives in a meaningful way. The teacher should choose the activity or combination of activities that best suit the dynamics of the classroom, the available time, and the students' comprehension level.

Feedback (10 - 15 minutes)

  1. Group Discussion and Reflection

    • After completing the activities, the teacher should gather all students in a large circle for a group discussion.
    • The teacher should ask each group to share some of the words they found for the augmentatives and diminutives and how they arrived at those words.
    • During this discussion, the teacher should encourage students to think about what they learned: How did they feel when creating new words? How did they find the augmentatives and diminutives in other words? What did they learn from the activities?
  2. Connecting Theory with Practice

    • The teacher should then explain how the activities students performed connect with the theory presented at the beginning of the lesson.
    • He/she can use the examples students gave during the discussion to illustrate how augmentatives and diminutives are formed and used in practice.
    • The teacher should emphasize that the goal of this lesson was not only to learn what augmentatives and diminutives are, but also to learn to use them in a creative and effective way.
  3. Final Reflection

    • To conclude the lesson, the teacher should propose that students reflect for a minute on what they learned in the lesson.
    • He/she can ask two simple questions to guide students' reflection: "What did you enjoy learning the most about augmentatives and diminutives today?" and "How can you use what you learned today in your daily life?".
    • The teacher can ask some students to share their answers with the class, which can promote a collaborative learning atmosphere and encourage students to value their own achievements.

This feedback is an essential part of the lesson plan, as it allows the teacher to assess students' understanding of the topic and reinforce the concepts learned. Additionally, the group discussion and final reflection encourage students to become active learners, capable of connecting what they learned in the classroom with their experiences and knowledge outside of it.

Conclusion (5 - 7 minutes)

  1. Summary of Learned Content: The teacher should start the conclusion of the lesson by giving a brief summary of the main points covered. He/she will remind students about what augmentatives and diminutives are, how they are formed, and how they are used in the Portuguese language. The teacher can also highlight some interesting examples that emerged during the activities.

  2. Connection between Theory and Practice: Next, the teacher will emphasize how the lesson connected theory and practice. He/she will highlight how the activities allowed students to apply what they learned in a creative and meaningful way. The teacher can ask students if they noticed any difference between the theory they learned and the practice they experienced during the activities.

  3. Extra Materials for Home Study: The teacher will suggest some extra materials for students to deepen their learning at home. These materials may include educational websites with interactive games about augmentatives and diminutives, children's books that extensively use augmentatives and diminutives, and educational videos that explain the concept in a playful way. The teacher can also encourage students to practice forming augmentatives and diminutives in their daily lives by observing the words around them and trying to modify them.

  4. Importance of the Subject for Daily Life: Finally, the teacher will discuss the importance of the subject for students' daily lives. He/she can explain that knowledge about augmentatives and diminutives is not only useful for writing and reading, but also for oral communication. The teacher can give examples of how augmentatives and diminutives are used in everyday situations, such as describing a pet or a favorite toy. Additionally, the teacher can emphasize that learning new words and linguistic structures, such as augmentatives and diminutives, is a skill that students can use in many other areas of study.

This conclusion will summarize the main ideas of the lesson, reinforce the connection between theory and practice, and encourage students to continue exploring the topic at home. Furthermore, the discussion about the importance of the subject for students' daily lives will help make learning more relevant and meaningful to them.
