Assumptions: This Active Lesson Plan assumes: a 100-minute class, prior student study with both the Book and the start of Project development, and that only one activity (among the three suggested) will be chosen to be conducted during the class, as each activity is designed to take up a significant portion of the available time.

Objectives

Duration: (5 - 7 minutes)

The Objectives stage is crucial for establishing a clear direction for the lesson. By defining what is expected of the students to learn, this section guides both the teacher and the students on study and application focuses. This helps maximize the use of classroom time, ensuring that all activities align with the learning objectives.

Main Objectives:

1. Empower students to identify and apply reading strategies for better text comprehension.

2. Develop reading planning skills, where students will identify the best sequence of steps to approach a text.

Side Objectives:

  1. Encourage student autonomy in choosing their reading strategies.
  2. Stimulate active participation and group discussion to refine reading techniques.

Introduction

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

The Introduction serves to engage students by using problem-based situations they may have encountered in their readings at home, encouraging reflection on their individual practices. Additionally, it contextualizes the importance of the theme for daily life, increasing the relevance of learning and motivating students to apply the strategies discussed in real situations.

Problem-Based Situations

1. Imagine you are reading a book and come across a word you've never seen before. How would you resolve this situation to understand what you're reading?

2. Think of a story you have read where you had difficulty fully understanding. What strategies could you have used to overcome those difficulties?

Contextualization

The ability to read is essential in all areas of life, from reading a simple note to understanding instruction manuals or complex academic texts. Understanding reading strategies not only facilitates content absorption but also helps build knowledge and develop critical thinking skills. Moreover, by learning how to self-regulate reading, students can improve their capacity for independent learning.

Development

Duration: (70 - 75 minutes)

The Development stage is designed to allow students to apply reading strategies in a practical and engaging manner. Through the proposed activities, students can consolidate knowledge acquired at home in a dynamic and collaborative way, as well as develop teamwork and critical thinking skills. This section is essential to transform theory into practice and ensure concepts are effectively internalized.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended to carry out only one of the suggested activities

Activity 1 - Literary Treasure Hunt

> Duration: (65 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Apply reading strategies in a playful and competitive context to reinforce text comprehension.

- Description: In this activity, students will participate in a treasure hunt within the classroom. The treasure is small excerpts from different stories hidden in various locations. To move from one point to another, students must read the excerpt they found and answer a question about it, using the reading strategies learned.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of up to 5 students.

  • Explain that each group will receive a map of the room with marked points where the excerpts are hidden.

  • Each text excerpt will have a related question that the students must answer to receive the next clue.

  • Students must apply reading strategies to answer correctly and continue the hunt.

  • The first group to reach the 'treasure' (the last excerpt) and correctly answer the last question wins.

Activity 2 - Puzzle Reading

> Duration: (65 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Develop the ability to sequence information and apply reading strategies for text comprehension.

- Description: Students will work in groups to solve a large puzzle, where each piece contains a text excerpt. To assemble the puzzle, they must use reading strategies to determine the correct order of the excerpts based on logical meaning and the content of the texts.

- Instructions:

  • Organize students into groups of no more than 5 people.

  • Distribute the puzzle pieces, each containing a text excerpt.

  • Groups must read the excerpts and decide the correct order to assemble the puzzle.

  • To decide the order, they should use the reading strategies discussed, such as identifying keywords and inferring context.

  • The group that assembles the puzzle first and correctly wins.

Activity 3 - Story Dramatization

> Duration: (65 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Use reading as a basis for creative and interpretive activities, reinforcing text comprehension and oral expression.

- Description: Students choose an excerpt from a well-known story. They must read the excerpt and then plan and present a dramatization that reflects their understanding of the text. During the presentation, they must use reading strategies to demonstrate how they arrived at that interpretation of the text.

- Instructions:

  • Each group chooses an excerpt from a story provided by the teacher.

  • Students read the excerpt and discuss the meaning and emotions involved.

  • Based on this, they plan and rehearse a dramatization of the excerpt.

  • They must explain to the class the reading strategies they used to arrive at that interpretation.

  • They present the dramatization, followed by an explanation of the strategies used.

Feedback

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

The purpose of this stage of the lesson plan is to consolidate the learning obtained through practical activities, allowing students to articulate and reflect on their experiences. The group discussion helps reinforce the understanding of reading strategy concepts and promotes the exchange of ideas and the construction of collective knowledge. Additionally, this stage is vital for the teacher to assess the effectiveness of the activities and the students' understanding.

Group Discussion

To start the group discussion, the teacher should gather all students, and each group share their experiences and learnings from the activities. Use the following questions to guide the discussion: 'What reading strategies did you find most effective during the treasure hunt or puzzle assembly?' 'How can applying these strategies help in other readings?' 'Were there any difficulties your group managed to overcome? How?' Encourage students to express their opinions and listen carefully to their peers.

Key Questions

1. Which reading strategies were most effective in understanding the texts during the activities?

2. How did group work help in understanding the texts and applying reading strategies?

3. Was there any moment during the activities when you had to change strategies? Why?

Conclusion

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

The purpose of the Conclusion stage is to ensure that students have a clear and consolidated understanding of the topics addressed during the lesson. Recapping the content helps in the retention of learning, while the discussion about the interconnection between theory and practice and the relevance of the theme reinforces motivation and applicability of what has been learned. This section is fundamental to closing the learning cycle and preparing students to apply reading strategies in their future readings.

Summary

In the conclusion of the lesson, the teacher should summarize the main reading strategies discussed and applied, recalling the steps for effective reading. It should highlight the strategies of identifying keywords, using contexts and inferences, as well as the importance of planning reading sequentially.

Theory Connection

It is essential for students to understand how the practical activities carried out are directly linked to the theory studied previously, highlighting that applying reading strategies in real and playful situations reinforces the theory and facilitates knowledge transfer to new contexts.

Closing

Finally, the teacher should emphasize the relevance of reading strategies in students' daily lives, demonstrating how the ability to effectively comprehend texts is crucial in various situations, from studies to everyday life. This emphasis helps consolidate the importance of learning and motivation for its continuous application.
