Nouns and Verbs

Objectives (5 - 7 minutes)

  1. Introduce students to the concept of nouns and verbs, explaining in a simplified way what they are and their purpose in the Portuguese language.

  2. Identify and differentiate between nouns and verbs in simple and everyday examples. Students should be able to recognize the function of each in constructing a sentence.

  3. Develop practical skills in recognizing nouns and verbs through interactive activities. Students will be encouraged to participate actively, sharing examples and engaging in educational games.

Introduction (8 - 10 minutes)

  1. Review of previous content: The teacher starts the lesson by reviewing basic concepts about sentences, words, and their classifications (such as names of people, animals, places, objects, actions, etc.). This is important so that students can better understand the importance of nouns and verbs.

  2. Problem-solving situations: The teacher presents two situations to the students involving the use of nouns and verbs. In the first one, the teacher may ask: 'If I say 'the dog ran in the park', which words do you think are the names of things and which are the actions that happened?'. In the second one, the teacher may propose: 'If I say 'the boy jumps', which word do you think shows an action and which word shows a name?'.

  3. Contextualization: The teacher explains that the study of nouns and verbs is important so that we can communicate effectively in our language. He can give examples of the use of these word classes in everyday situations, such as reading a book, writing a story, or even having a conversation with friends.

  4. Capturing students' attention: The teacher proposes two curiosities to spark students' interest. First, he can ask: 'Did you know that there are more than 100,000 nouns in the Portuguese language?'. Then, he can reveal: 'And did you know that, in a sentence, the verb always indicates the main action?'.

  5. Introduction to the lesson topic: Finally, the teacher introduces the lesson topic, explaining that they will learn more about nouns and verbs and how to use them correctly and efficiently in their communications. He can say: 'Today, we will discover what nouns and verbs are and how they help create sentences. Let's learn while having fun, with games and fun activities!'

Development (20 - 25 minutes)

  1. Activity 1: Nouns and Verbs Bingo (10 - 12 minutes)

    • The teacher prepares bingo cards with various words, some being nouns and others verbs.
    • Each student receives a card, and the teacher holds the words on small cards or chips.
    • The teacher draws a card and reads the word aloud. Students must identify if it is a noun or a verb and mark it on the card if they have the corresponding word.
    • The game continues until a student completes a line or the entire card. The winning student must then identify and explain if the marked words on their card are nouns or verbs.
  2. Activity 2: Building Sentences (8 - 10 minutes)

    • The teacher divides the class into small groups and distributes cards with nouns and verbs written on each.
    • Each group is tasked with constructing a logical and coherent sentence using all the nouns and verbs from their cards.
    • Students must work together, discussing and organizing the words until they have built a meaningful sentence.
    • After completion, each group must present their sentence to the class, emphasizing which words are nouns and which are verbs.
  3. Activity 3: Grammatical Treasure Hunt (10 - 12 minutes)

    • The teacher hides cards with words (nouns and verbs) around the classroom. These cards should have a part of a story written on them.
    • Students are divided into teams and given the mission to find the cards and rearrange the story with the words found.
    • Each team must work together to find the cards. They should read the word aloud and then discuss if it is a noun or a verb. After that, they should try to fit the word into the story.
    • The team that manages to complete the story first, logically and coherently, will be the winner.

During these activities, the teacher should circulate around the classroom, assisting students in identifying words as nouns or verbs and in constructing sentences. In the end, it is important for the teacher to conduct a collective review of the activities, reinforcing the concepts learned and clarifying any possible doubts.

Return (10 - 12 minutes)

  1. Group discussion (3 - 4 minutes): The teacher suggests that each team briefly presents the solution found during the 'Building Sentences' activity. During the presentations, the teacher asks students to explain how they identified the nouns and verbs and how these words contributed to the sentence construction. The idea is to make students reflect on the learning process and how they applied the lesson content. The teacher can also encourage students to ask each other questions, promoting interaction and dialogue among them.

  2. Connection to theory (3 - 4 minutes): After the presentations, the teacher revisits the concepts of nouns and verbs, recalling the definition of each and emphasizing the importance of these words in sentence construction. The teacher can ask students questions to assess their understanding of the subject. For example: 'Who can give me an example of a noun?' and 'Who can give me an example of a verb?'. The teacher praises correct answers, and if there are incorrect answers, explains clearly and didactically to correct possible confusions.

  3. Final reflection (4 - 5 minutes): The teacher suggests that students reflect on what they learned in the lesson. To do this, he asks two simple and direct questions:

    • 'What was the easiest part of today's lesson and why?'
    • 'What was the most challenging part of today's lesson and why?'

Students have a minute to think about their answers. Then, the teacher invites some students to share their reflections with the class. The teacher reinforces that there are no right or wrong answers, and that the important thing is that they have been able to identify what they learned and what the challenges were in the process. This reflection activity helps students consolidate their learning and realize the progress they are making.

At the end of the lesson, the teacher may suggest that students continue practicing identifying nouns and verbs in their daily lives, whether while reading a book, writing a story, or even in a conversation with family. The teacher can propose that students bring examples for the next lesson and share their learning experiences. This stimulates students' autonomy and makes them feel more motivated to continue learning.

Conclusion (5 - 7 minutes)

  1. Summary of learned content (2 - 3 minutes): The teacher reinforces the concepts of nouns and verbs, summarizing what was learned in the lesson. He can do this by asking students direct questions, asking them to recall the definition of each and the role they play in sentence construction. The teacher can then provide examples of nouns and verbs for students to visualize and reinforce learning.

  2. Connection between theory and practice (1 - 2 minutes): The teacher explains how the lesson connected theory (the definition of nouns and verbs) with practice (the identification and use of these words in sentences). He can highlight how the activities carried out in the classroom allowed students to apply the concepts learned in a playful and interactive way.

  3. Suggestion of complementary materials (1 - 2 minutes): The teacher suggests some extra materials for students to deepen their knowledge of nouns and verbs. These materials may include books, online games, educational videos, and interactive websites. For example, the teacher may suggest the book 'Adventures with Words: Nouns and Verbs', which presents grammatical classification in a fun and illustrated way. Additionally, he can recommend an online game where students have to identify nouns and verbs in a list of words. The teacher should remind students that these materials are optional and that participation is an opportunity for additional learning.

  4. Importance of the topic for daily life (1 minute): Finally, the teacher emphasizes the importance of studying nouns and verbs for everyday communication. He can explain that by understanding these fundamental parts of the Portuguese language, students will be able to form sentences more easily and express themselves more clearly. The teacher can also encourage students to pay attention to the use of nouns and verbs in different contexts, such as reading a book, writing a text, or talking with friends.

At the end of the lesson, the teacher should assure students that they can always ask questions or seek help if they have doubts about the content. He should reinforce that learning is a continuous process and that each lesson is an opportunity to learn something new.
