3. Recognize the main characteristics of theater, including elements such as scenery, costumes, scripts, and interpretation.

  2. Promote critical appreciation of the performing arts.

Introduction

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

The purpose of this stage is to introduce students to the world of theater, helping them understand its relevance and diversity. This initial understanding is fundamental for students to engage in subsequent practical activities with a contextualized and in-depth knowledge of the subject.

Warming Up

Introduction to the Theme: Theater, one of the oldest forms of artistic expression, combines elements such as scenery, costumes, scripts, and interpretation to tell stories and convey emotions. To start our class, ask students to use their phones to find an interesting fact about theater. They can look for information about the history of theater, curiosities about famous plays, or even data about renowned actors and directors. Give them a few minutes for this research and then ask them to share the facts they found with the class.

2. How does theater differ from other forms of entertainment, such as movies and TV shows?

Development

Duration: (75 - 85 minutes)

The purpose of this stage is to allow students to engage practically and creatively with the theme of theater, using digital technologies as learning tools. The proposed activities encourage collaboration, innovation, and the application of acquired knowledge in a contextualized and fun way.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended that only one of the suggested activities be carried out

Activity 1 - Digital Theater: Creating Plays for YouTube 

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Develop theater and video production skills, promoting creativity and teamwork.

- Description: Students will create a short theater play that will be recorded and published on YouTube. They will need to choose a theme, write the script, rehearse, and finally film the play using cell phones. In addition to practicing theater skills, they will learn about digital content production.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of up to 5 students.

  • Ask them to choose a theme or story they would like to represent.

  • Guide them in drafting a script of no more than 5 minutes.

  • Allocate 10-15 minutes for students to rehearse their lines and movements.

  • Use cell phones to record the presentation, encouraging the use of different angles and filming techniques.

  • After recording, each group can edit the video using simple online tools, such as YouTube Studio or free video editing apps.

  • Ask for videos to be published on a specific channel for the class on YouTube (ensuring student privacy and safety).

  • Conclude the activity with a showing of the videos, where each group can present and comment on the creative process.

Activity 2 - Storytelling on Social Media: A Story from Theater 

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Encourage creativity and digital narrative skills, while exploring theater in a modern and interactive way.

- Description: Students will create a series of Instagram stories to tell the story of a famous play. They will use images, short videos, texts, and audio to narrate the story creatively and interactively.

- Instructions:

  • Form groups of up to 5 students.

  • Each group must choose a famous play (e.g., Romeo and Juliet, The Wizard of Oz).

  • Ask them to research details about the story of the play and characters.

  • Students should create a storyboard with the sequence of posts they will make to tell the story.

  • Use a content creation app for Instagram (like Canva or directly on Instagram) for students to produce the stories.

  • Encourage the use of interactive resources such as polls, questions, videos, and visual effects.

  • Each group must publish their stories on an Instagram account created specifically for the class, or present their sequence of stories directly from the group's account.

  • At the end, gather the class to discuss the different approaches and creativity of each group.

Activity 3 - Scene Game: Gamification of Theater 

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Integrate theatrical knowledge with the dynamics of games, promoting playful and collaborative learning.

- Description: Students will use a gamification platform (like Kahoot! or Quizizz) to create a quiz about theater. Questions can involve historical aspects, types of theater, scene elements, and trivia about famous plays.

- Instructions:

  • Form groups of up to 5 students.

  • Ask each group to choose an aspect of theater to explore (history, types of theater, scenic elements, etc.).

  • Guide them to research and create a series of questions and answers related to the chosen topic.

  • Use a gamification platform (like Kahoot! or Quizizz) for the groups to input their questions.

  • Each group must organize their questions to serve as an interactive and challenging game.

  • After creation, each group can play the quiz created by another group, promoting knowledge exchange.

  • At the end, hold a discussion about what they learned during the activity and how gamification can be an interesting tool for learning.

Feedback

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

Purpose: The purpose of this stage is to consolidate learning through reflection and sharing experiences, promoting self-critique and valuing teamwork. This final discussion allows students to internalize the content more deeply and receive constructive feedback that can benefit their ongoing development.

Group Discussion

Group Discussion: Promote a group discussion where students share their experiences and learnings. Start by thanking everyone for their efforts and introduce the discussion highlighting the importance of sharing ideas. Use the following outline to guide the conversation:

  1. Introduction: "Now that we have completed our activities, let's share what we learned and how we felt during the process."
  2. Experience Sharing: "Each group can talk about their activity, challenges faced, and creative solutions."
  3. Discussion of Relevant Points: "What were the most interesting points you discovered about theater?"
  4. Closing: "How do you think this experience can be applicable outside the classroom?"

Reflections

1.What was the biggest lesson learned from creating and sharing your digital theater plays? 2.How did the use of social media and digital platforms help in understanding the theme of theater? 3.What would you do differently if you had another opportunity to carry out this activity?

360° Feedback

360° Feedback: Instruct students to give feedback to each other within the groups. Explain that the feedback should be constructive and respectful, focusing on strengths and areas for improvement. Use the following model to guide the feedback exchange:

  1. Positive Points: "What was done well?"
  2. Areas for Improvement: "What can be improved?"
  3. Suggestions: "Can I suggest something for improvement?"
  4. Conclusion: "How can we apply these improvements in future activities?"

Conclusion

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

Purpose: This concluding stage serves to consolidate the learning of the lesson, connecting the discussed content with real life and the modern world. It allows students to reflect on the importance and practical applications of what they have learned, wrapping up the lesson with a deeper and contextualized understanding of theater.

Summary

Brilliant Summary: Today, our 4th graders explored the exciting seas of theater!  They discovered that theater is an ancient art form that combines scenery, costumes, scripts, and interpretation to tell amazing stories and express emotions. Through practical activities, students created their own plays for YouTube, narrated stories of famous plays on Instagram, and gamified learning with interactive quizzes. 

World Connection

In the Modern World: Today's activities showed how theater can intertwine with modern technology. By creating plays for YouTube and narrating stories on Instagram, students saw how theater can be adapted and appreciated on digital platforms, reflecting current dynamics of content consumption and interaction on social media.

Practical Application

Importance in Daily Life: Understanding theater and its characteristics not only enriches our cultural appreciation but also strengthens skills like creativity, collaboration, verbal and non-verbal expression. All of this is fundamental both for school life and everyday life, where effective communication and creativity are highly valued.
