Objectives

Duration: 10 to 15 minutes

The purpose of this stage is to outline the learning objectives for the lesson, providing clarity on the skills and competencies that students should achieve by the end of the session. This ensures that all activities and methodologies used throughout the lesson are directed toward improving students' understanding of addition and subtraction problems, situating learning in a relevant and engaging context.

Main Objectives

1. Understand and apply concepts of addition and subtraction of natural numbers in contextualized problems.

2. Develop skills to solve addition and subtraction problems involving everyday situations.

3. Strengthen logical reasoning and the ability to solve basic mathematical problems.

Side Objectives

  1. Encourage collaboration and teamwork through group activities.
  2. Promote the use of digital resources for practicing and reinforcing mathematical concepts.

Introduction

Duration: 10 to 15 minutes

The purpose of this stage is to engage students from the start of the lesson, connecting the theme of addition and subtraction to their digital and everyday context. By encouraging active research for information and group sharing, interaction and interest in the topic are promoted, preparing them for the practical activities that will follow.

Warming Up

Warm-up: Start the lesson by discussing the importance of addition and subtraction concepts in everyday life, such as counting items, money, and time. Highlight that these operations are fundamental for solving various everyday problems. Ask students to use their cell phones to look up an interesting fact related to addition and subtraction, such as historical curiosities or modern applications in science and technology. Give them a few minutes to research and then ask them to share the facts they found with the class.

Initial Reflections

1. Who can share an interesting fact they found about addition or subtraction?

2. Why do you think addition and subtraction are such important operations in everyday life?

3. Can someone mention a recent situation where they used addition or subtraction outside of school?

4. How do you think social media can help us learn more about math?

5. Who here finds it easy to solve addition and subtraction problems? Does anyone have tips to make this simpler?

Development

Duration: 70 to 75 minutes

The purpose of this stage is to provide practical and engaging activities that allow students to apply addition and subtraction concepts in modern and familiar contexts. Using technology as a mediator, students are encouraged to solve real problems, develop collaboration and communication skills, and reinforce their understanding through playful and creative methods.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended that only one of the suggested activities be carried out

Activity 1 - Math Adventure of Influencers 

> Duration: 60 to 70 minutes

- Objective: Encourage practical application of addition and subtraction concepts, developing communication and creativity skills through the creation of digital content.

- Description: Students will become digital influencers for a day and create content for social media by solving addition and subtraction problems. Using their cell phones, they must create a series of Instagram stories or TikTok videos explaining how to solve an addition and subtraction problem in a fun and clear way. The goal is to teach their followers (classmates) how to solve these problems.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the students into groups of up to 5 people.

  • Ask groups to choose a real-life addition or subtraction problem, such as splitting the bill for a snack or calculating change on a purchase.

  • Each group should create a script to explain the solution to the chosen problem.

  • Using a cell phone, record a series of Instagram stories or a TikTok video explaining the problem and solution in a fun and creative way.

  • The videos should include visual elements, such as graphs or drawings, to make the explanation clearer.

  • Share the videos with the class and encourage discussion about the different approaches used by the groups.

Activity 2 - Math Treasure Hunt ‍☠️

> Duration: 60 to 70 minutes

- Objective: Encourage teamwork and practical problem-solving, using technology to create an interactive and fun learning experience.

- Description: Transform the classroom into a treasure hunt scenario where students need to solve addition and subtraction problems to find clues and locate the 'treasure'. Each clue will be a problem that must be solved, and students will use mobile devices to scan QR codes that contain the clues.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the students into groups of up to 5 people.

  • Prepare addition and subtraction problems in advance and encode them in QR codes.

  • Spread the QR codes around the classroom or schoolyard, each leading to a problem that, when solved, gives the direction to find the next clue.

  • Provide each group with a mobile device with a QR code reader installed.

  • Students must scan the QR codes, solve the problems, and follow the clues to find the 'treasure' (which can be a symbolic prize or a certificate).

  • Conduct a final discussion about the strategies used to solve the problems and which group was more efficient.

Activity 3 - Math Game Show 

> Duration: 60 to 70 minutes

- Objective: Stimulate healthy competition and cooperative learning, using digital tools to create a dynamic and interactive learning environment.

- Description: Create a game show inspired by TV programs where students compete in teams to solve addition and subtraction problems. Each round will have a different difficulty level, and students will use tablets or computers to respond to questions in an online quiz created with tools like Kahoot! or Quizizz.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the students into teams of up to 5 people.

  • Create an online quiz using a platform like Kahoot! or Quizizz with addition and subtraction questions of varying levels of difficulty.

  • Each team should appoint a captain who will be responsible for submitting the answers.

  • Project the quiz on the main screen of the classroom and start the game show.

  • Teams will have a limited time to discuss and answer each question using tablets or computers.

  • At the end of the quiz, reveal the results and congratulate the winning team.

  • Discuss the correct answers and common mistakes with the class, reinforcing the concepts learned.

Feedback

Duration: 15 to 20 minutes

The purpose of this stage is to consolidate learning through the exchange of experiences and reflections. The group discussion and 360° feedback allow students to recognize their achievements, identify areas for improvement, and value collaboration. This moment strengthens the understanding of mathematical concepts and social skills, essential for both the school environment and everyday life.

Group Discussion

Promote a group discussion with all students, where groups share what they learned by completing the activities and their conclusions. Use the following script to introduce the discussion:

Start by thanking everyone for their active participation in the activities. Ask each group what surprised them during the tasks. Request that they share a specific problem they found challenging and how they managed to solve it. Encourage them to talk about how the integration of digital technologies helped in understanding the concepts of addition and subtraction. Conclude by emphasizing the importance of sharing knowledge and learning from peers' experiences.

Reflections

1. What were the main challenges you faced when solving addition and subtraction problems? 2. How did the use of digital resources influence your approach and understanding of the problems? 3. What did you learn from other groups that can be applied in future math activities?

360° Feedback

Conduct a 360° feedback step where each student will receive feedback from their group peers regarding their participation and contribution to the activities. Guide the class to ensure that feedback is constructive and respectful, using the feedback model of 'Strengths' and 'Suggestions for Improvement'. Explain that each student should mention at least one positive point and one suggestion for improvement for each peer, focusing on aspects such as collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving skills.

Conclusion

Duration: 10 to 15 minutes

Purpose: This stage aims to consolidate the day's learning by reinforcing key concepts in a fun and engaging way. By connecting the activities carried out with real-world applications and the everyday lives of students, we seek to ensure that they see the practical value of what they've learned, motivating them to continue exploring and applying this knowledge outside the classroom.
