Premises: This Active Lesson Plan assumes: a 100-minute class duration, prior student study both with the Book and the beginning of Project development, and that only one activity (among the three suggested) will be chosen to be carried out during the class, as each activity is designed to take up a large part of the available time.

Objective

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The objectives stage serves to clarify the learning aims of the lesson, ensuring that both students and teachers share a common understanding of the skills to be developed. This clarity at the outset is crucial for guiding lesson activities and keeping the focus aligned with the learners' educational needs, thereby facilitating a more effective implementation of teaching strategies.

Objective Utama:

1. Enable learners to accurately write reflexive pronouns in English, following grammatical guidelines and using them in suitable contexts.

2. Cultivate the ability to spot reflexive pronouns in various texts, enhancing comprehension and text analysis skills.

Introduction

Duration: (20 - 25 minutes)

The introduction stage aims to engross learners in the topic of reflexive pronouns through real-life problem situations that inspire critical thinking and the practical application of previously learned concepts. Additionally, the contextualisation links reflexive pronouns with day-to-day situations, sparking interest and awareness of the topic’s relevance, allowing students to recognise how applicable the content is in their own lives.

Problem-Based Situation

1. Ask learners to picture a scenario where they must describe, in English, an incident where someone hurt themselves. How would they correctly employ reflexive pronouns to narrate this situation?

2. Encourage students to consider a conversation between two characters from a story, film or even local folklore, where one character is teaching the other to do something independently. How can reflexive pronouns be used to indicate that the character is carrying out the action by themselves?

Contextualization

Emphasise the significance of reflexive pronouns by illustrating their use in safety guidelines, like product labels or emergency procedures, where it is vital for individuals to perform actions accurately to ensure their safety. Point out that reflexive pronouns frequently pop up in everyday conversations and formal writing, underlining the importance of grasping and effectively using these structures for clear communication in English.

Development

Duration: (65 - 75 minutes)

The development stage is crafted to allow learners to apply their existing knowledge of reflexive pronouns in a practical and engaging context. The activities proposed not only aim to reinforce grammatical understanding but also to nurture communication skills, creative writing, and personal reflection. This hands-on approach is crucial for effective knowledge retention and equips learners to use reflexive pronouns confidently across a range of communicative situations.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended that only one of the suggested activities be carried out

Activity 1 - Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Enhance the ability to apply reflexive pronouns in spoken contexts and increase fluency in spotting these pronouns in dialogues.

- Description: In this activity, learners will craft a monologue of a character speaking to themselves in front of a mirror, using reflexive pronouns to convey their thoughts and emotions. The tone can be dramatic, humorous, or whatever sparks their inspiration.

- Instructions:

  • Split the class into groups of up to 5 learners.

  • Each group should decide on a setting and a character for their monologue.

  • They must write a 2 to 3-minute monologue that correctly incorporates reflexive pronouns.

  • Following the writing session, each group presents their monologue to the class.

  • The other groups will then identify the reflexive pronouns used and discuss their correct usage in the context presented.

Activity 2 - Secret Diary

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Practice writing reflectively and introspectively, using reflexive pronouns to articulate actions and inner thoughts of a character.

- Description: Learners will draft diary entries as if they were a fictional character, detailing daily occurrences while using reflexive pronouns. This task aims to deepen comprehension of the personal and introspective nature of reflexive pronouns.

- Instructions:

  • Students will be divided into groups of up to 5 individuals.

  • Each group creates a fictional character and discusses the key events of a typical day in that character’s life.

  • They will then write a diary entry from that person's viewpoint, using reflexive pronouns to articulate thoughts and personal actions.

  • Every group will read their diary entry to the class, while classmates will identify and discuss the use of reflexive pronouns.

Activity 3 - Interview with Myself

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Refine oral communication skills by employing reflexive pronouns in an interview scenario, fostering self-analysis and personal expression.

- Description: In this activity, students will role-play an interview where they answer questions about themselves, utilising reflexive pronouns. The aim is to improve spontaneous speaking and personal reflection.

- Instructions:

  • Students will pair up.

  • Each student drafts a list of questions to ask their partner, focusing on personal experiences and feelings.

  • Interviewees must respond correctly using reflexive pronouns.

  • After the interview, each pair will share a summary of their partner’s answers, highlighting the use of reflexive pronouns.

  • The class will discuss the examples and provide feedback on pronoun usage.

Feedback

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

The aim of this stage is to consolidate learners' understanding, allowing them to reflect on the activities undertaken and weave together the knowledge gained into a practical context. The group discussion fosters an exchange of ideas and experiences, reinforcing comprehension of the topic and bolstering learners' ability to implement reflexive pronouns in a variety of communication settings.

Group Discussion

Kick off the group discussion by encouraging each group to share their experiences and insights from the activities. Use the following prompts to facilitate the conversation: Start by inquiring about challenges faced when using reflexive pronouns, proceed to discuss the discoveries made during the activities, and conclude by asking them to share how these lessons can be applied in real-life communication scenarios.

Key Questions

1. What were the key challenges faced when using reflexive pronouns during the activities?

2. How can correct usage of reflexive pronouns affect clarity in communication?

3. What lessons from today’s activities can you carry over into real life or other areas of study?

Conclusion

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The conclusion stage aims to ensure that learners have a solid grasp of the concepts explored, linking theory to practice and underscoring the significance of reflexive pronouns in everyday English usage. This recap aids in reinforcing their learning and establishing a strong groundwork for the future application of the knowledge acquired.

Summary

In closing, it's vital to recap the core points discussed about reflexive pronouns. Learners should review the correct application of these pronouns in diverse contexts, helping to solidify their learning from the lesson.

Theory Connection

Today’s lesson effectively bridged theory and practice, enriching the learners’ theoretical understanding of reflexive pronouns through interactive activities. This approach helped students see the real-world applicability of the concepts taught, boosting their comprehension and capacity to use these structures.

Closing

Reflexive pronouns are crucial for effective communication in English, adaptable to various contexts, from casual chats to more formal discussions. Understanding and correctly implementing these pronouns not only helps students enhance their language skills but also enriches their social and academic interactions.
