1. Understand the concept of identity and how it evolves over time.

2. Motivate students to contemplate their own identity formation and the influences around them.

3. Cultivate self-awareness and critical thinking regarding one’s identity.

Duration: 15 to 20 minutes

Emotional Warmup Activity

Journey to the Tranquility Garden

Guided Meditation is a technique where the teacher leads students through a calming exercise that promotes relaxation, focus, and concentration. By following the teacher's guidance, students are invited to close their eyes, take deep breaths, and visualize a peaceful setting, preparing their minds for learning. This practice not only helps reduce stress but also enhances mental clarity, getting students emotionally ready for upcoming sessions.

1. Ask students to sit comfortably in their chairs, with their feet flat on the ground and hands resting on their laps.

2. Instruct them to gently close their eyes and start taking slow, deep breaths—inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth.

3. Encourage students to focus on their breathing, feeling the air as it enters and leaves their bodies.

4. After a few moments, prompt students to visualize a stunning garden. Paint a vivid picture of this garden: vibrant flowers, tall trees, and the soothing sound of a gentle stream.

5. Motivate students to mentally explore this garden, observing its colors, textures, and the soothing sounds of nature around them.

6. After a few minutes of visualization, gently guide students back to the classroom, encouraging them to open their eyes slowly and prepare for the lesson.

Content Contextualization

The formation of identity is a nuanced and continuous journey that every individual goes through. In today’s world, we are perpetually influenced by multiple factors, including our culture, family, friendships, and the media. It’s vital to understand how these elements shape our identity, contributing to a strong sense of self-awareness and self-worth.

Take, for instance, how social media impacts our self-perception. We often find ourselves comparing our lives to the idealized versions we see online, which can significantly affect our self-esteem and emotional well-being. Gaining insight into these dynamics allows us to make more intentional and responsible choices about how we present ourselves and how we view our identity.

Development

Duration: 60 to 75 minutes

Theory Guide

Duration: 20 to 25 minutes

1. Identity: Identity is essentially our understanding of who we are, shaped by an amalgamation of personal traits, experiences, values, beliefs, and social dynamics. It’s a dynamic concept that transforms over time as we pick up new experiences and insights.

2. Self-Awareness: Self-awareness is our capacity to recognize and understand our own emotions, thoughts, and values. This is crucial for forming a solid identity, as it empowers us to determine what truly matters to us and how we wish to present ourselves in the world.

3. Self-Control: Self-control involves effectively managing our emotions and actions. In the context of identity formation, it equips us to consciously respond to external influences while staying aligned with our values.

4. Responsible Decision-Making: This encompasses the ability to make choices that consider the outcomes for ourselves and others. In identity development, responsible decision-making requires reflection on how our choices impact our self-image and our relationships with those around us.

5. Social Skills: These include the capacity to communicate well, exhibit empathy, and establish healthy relationships. Social skills are vital in shaping our identity since social interactions directly influence our self-image and how others view us.

6. Social Awareness: This refers to the ability to appreciate and respect differing perspectives, allowing for positive participation in our communities. Social awareness aids us to comprehend how cultural, historical, and social factors inform our identity and that of others.

7. Examples and Analogies: 1. Example: Think of a teenager raised in a family that prioritizes education; they may develop an identity aligned with the value of learning. However, as they meet peers with various interests, they may begin to question and adjust their identity. 2. Analogy: Identity can be likened to a patchwork quilt, where each patch represents an experience, value, or influence. As new patches are added, the quilt evolves, yet each patch remains a part of its entirety.

Activity with Socioemotional Feedback

Duration: 40 to 50 minutes

Exploring Our Identity

In this session, students will be invited to explore and contemplate the diverse elements that compose their identity. They will create an 'Identity Map', which will be a visual depiction of various influences, values, and attributes that define who they are.

1. Distribute sheets of paper along with drawing tools (colored pencils, markers, etc.) to each student.

2. Explain that every student will craft an 'Identity Map', segmenting the sheet into sections that symbolize different facets of their identity (e.g., family, friends, hobbies, values, etc.).

3. Encourage students to identify at least three key influences or experiences for each section and depict these visually (they can use words, sketches, symbols, etc.).

4. Prompt students to think deeply about how each factor contributes to their identity and to jot down brief descriptions or feelings linked to each one.

5. After completing the maps, divide students into small groups to share and discuss their creations.

6. As students engage in discussion, circulate around the room, offering guidance and encouraging them to reflect deeply.

Discussion and Group Feedback

Following the creation of the 'Identity Map', facilitate a group discussion using the RULER method:

  • Recognize: Prompt students to share how they felt during the process of creating and sharing their maps. Encourage them to identify the emotions that surfaced.
  • Understand: Engage in a discussion about the reasons behind these emotions. Why did specific influences or experiences evoke particular feelings? What implications do these feelings have for their identity development?
  • Name: Assist students in accurately naming the emotions they experienced (for example, pride, insecurity, gratitude, etc.).
  • Express: Encourage students to express these emotions constructively, sharing their reflections while actively listening to their peers with respect and empathy.
  • Regulate: Discuss strategies for managing intense emotions that might arise as they reflect on their identity, such as fostering self-acceptance and seeking support from friends and family.

Conclusion

Duration: 20 to 25 minutes

Reflection and Emotional Regulation

Encourage students to reflect on the emotional hurdles faced during the lesson, whether while creating the 'Identity Map' or during the group discussion. Ask them to choose between writing a paragraph or engaging in a group discussion about how they navigated their emotions. Prompt them to pinpoint moments where they felt challenged and the strategies they employed to handle those feelings. If they opt to write, collect their responses for later review; if they prefer discussion, foster a respectful and attentive environment.

Objective: The goal of this exercise is to help students practice self-reflection and emotional regulation, enabling them to recognize effective strategies for managing challenging situations. This contributes to enhanced self-awareness and nurtures their capacity to handle emotions in a constructive manner.

Glimpse into the Future

To wrap up the class, prompt each student to establish personal and academic goals related to what they've learned. Encourage them to contemplate how they can implement insights regarding identity and self-awareness in their daily lives and studies. They can choose to jot their goals down or share them with the class if they feel at ease.

Penetapan Objective:

1. Reflect on how past experiences have influenced their identity.

2. Identify personal areas they wish to delve into or develop further.

3. Apply emotional regulation strategies in future challenging scenarios.

4. Cultivate a practice of regular self-assessment to continue enhancing self-awareness.

5. Enhance social skills through empathy and efficient communication with peers. Objective: This segment aims to bolster students' independence and the practical application of their learnings, seeking continuity in both academic and personal growth. By setting objectives, students formulate an action plan that assists them in internalizing and utilizing the insights gained about identity and socio-emotional skills.
