Lesson Plan | Active Learning | Numerals

Keywordsnumerals in English, cardinal numbers, ordinal numbers, multiplicative numbers, number conversion, practical activities, flipped classroom, teamwork, effective communication, real and simulated contexts, knowledge application, student engagement
Required Materialsset of numerical codes in English, posters or whiteboards, large poster boards, projector and screen, boards and markers, items for auditorium arrangement (chairs, stage)

Assumptions: This Active Lesson Plan assumes: a 100-minute class, prior student study with both the Book and the start of Project development, and that only one activity (among the three suggested) will be chosen to be conducted during the class, as each activity is designed to take up a significant portion of the available time.

Objectives

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The Objectives stage aims to clearly establish what is expected of students to learn and be able to do by the end of the lesson. Defining specific objectives helps guide both students' learning process and the activities planned for the lesson, ensuring that all efforts are aligned with clear and measurable educational goals.

Main Objectives:

1. Enable students to recognize and use numerals in English, distinguishing between cardinals, ordinals, and multiplicatives.

2. Enable students to convert ordinal numbers into cardinal numbers for various practical applications.

Side Objectives:

  1. Encourage active participation from students in practical activities to solidify theoretical learning.

Introduction

Duration: (20 - 25 minutes)

The Introduction stage serves to engage students with the content they have previously studied and to apply theoretical knowledge in practical and realistic contexts. The proposed problem situations encourage students to think critically about the application of numerals in real-world situations, preparing them for more complex activities during the lesson. The contextualization helps to realize the relevance of the topic in daily life and in global contexts, increasing students' interest and motivation.

Problem-Based Situations

1. Imagine you are organizing a chess tournament at an international school and need to put up a poster with the match schedule. How would you write the times in English, considering ordinal numbers to indicate the different rounds?

2. Think about visiting a museum abroad and needing to describe the room where the second oldest painting in the collection is located. How would you express 'second' in English, considering that it is an ordinal number?

Contextualization

Understanding and correctly using numerals in English is essential in everyday and academic situations. From organizing international events to describing positions in sports or cultural competitions, numerals play a crucial role in clear and effective communication. Additionally, curiosities like the use of Roman numerals on clocks and award ceremonies add a layer of cultural interest to the learning of this topic.

Development

Duration: (75 - 80 minutes)

The Development stage aims to put students in practical and playful situations that require the application of their prior knowledge about numerals in English. Through group activities, students can explore and solidify their understanding of cardinal, ordinal, and multiplicative numbers, as well as develop teamwork and communication skills. These activities also aim to increase student engagement through fun and relevant contexts, ensuring more effective and lasting learning.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended to carry out only one of the suggested activities

Activity 1 - International Math Mission

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Practice converting ordinal numbers into cardinals in a playful and collaborative context, reinforcing prior learning and promoting teamwork.

- Description: In this activity, students take on the role of secret agents in an international mission that involves deciphering codes to prevent a cyber attack. The codes consist of numbers written in English, and to decode them, students will need to convert ordinal numbers into cardinals.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of up to 5 students.

  • Provide each group with a set of numerical codes written in English, which include ordinal numbers.

  • Groups should use their prior knowledge of numerals to convert ordinal numbers into cardinals and decipher the codes.

  • Each deciphered code will reveal a part of the secret message that helps to prevent the attack.

  • The first group to decipher all codes and complete the message will be the winner.

Activity 2 - Numeral Olympics

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Review and solidify knowledge about numerals in English, stimulating quick thinking and cooperation among students.

- Description: Students will participate in a 'quiz show'-style competition where they will have to answer questions involving the correct use of numerals in English, including cardinals, ordinals, and multiplication. The setting is a large cultural olympiad, where knowledge of English is essential for interaction with athletes from different countries.

- Instructions:

  • Arrange the room in an auditorium style, with student groups seated in rows.

  • Project questions related to different types of numerals in English on a screen.

  • Each group must discuss the answer and write it on a whiteboard.

  • After a set time, each group presents its answer.

  • Points are awarded for correct answers, and the group with the most points at the end is the winner.

Activity 3 - Building a World Calendar

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Apply knowledge of numerals in English practically and culturally, raising awareness of the diversity of dates and events around the world.

- Description: In this activity, students, organized in groups, will be tasked with creating a world calendar, including important dates from different countries and cultures. They will use their knowledge of numerals in English to write the dates correctly, including ordinal numbers in events such as holidays and festivals.

- Instructions:

  • Distribute to each group a set of dates and important events from different countries.

  • Groups should use large poster boards to create the layout of a calendar, writing the dates in English.

  • Each date must be written correctly, including the appropriate use of ordinal numbers.

  • At the end, each group presents its calendar, explaining the importance of the events and interesting facts about the use of numerals.

Feedback

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

The purpose of this stage of the lesson plan is to allow students to reflect on the learning acquired during practical activities and share their experiences and knowledge. This discussion helps to consolidate learning, allowing students to articulate what they understood and hear their peers' perspectives, which can enrich their understanding and application of the numerals concepts in English. Additionally, this stage promotes communication and argumentation skills among students, essential for the effective use of the English language.

Group Discussion

To start the group discussion, gather all students in a circle and begin with a brief introduction about the importance of applying numerals in English in everyday life and in international contexts. Then, ask each group to share their experiences during the activities, highlighting what challenges they encountered and how they overcame them. Encourage students to discuss the strategies they used to convert ordinal numbers into cardinals and how this can be applied in real communication situations in English.

Key Questions

1. What were the main challenges in converting ordinal numbers into cardinals during the activities, and how did you overcome them?

2. How can the ability to convert ordinal numbers into cardinals be useful in practical communication situations in English?

3. Was there any situation during the activities where understanding numerals in English changed the dynamics or resolution of the problem?

Conclusion

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The Conclusion stage serves to consolidate learning, helping students connect theoretical concepts with the practical applications experienced during activities. Additionally, this section reinforces the importance of studying numerals in English, showing its relevance in daily life and in international contexts. By highlighting the relevance and applicability of the content, the Conclusion motivates students to continue exploring and improving their numerical skills in English.

Summary

To conclude, the teacher should summarize the main points covered in the lesson, emphasizing the difference between ordinal, cardinal, and multiplicative numbers in English. It should recap how students applied this knowledge in practical activities, such as deciphering codes and creating international calendars, reinforcing the importance of each type of numeral in specific contexts.

Theory Connection

Explain how today's lesson connected theory with practice, highlighting the playful and situational activities that simulated the use of numerals in real and simulated contexts, such as international tournaments and cultural olympiads. Also, highlight how converting ordinal numbers into cardinals is a fundamental skill for effective communication in English.

Closing

Finally, emphasize the relevance of studying numerals in English in students' daily lives, highlighting how the knowledge gained can be applied in everyday and professional situations, especially in a globalized world where English is widely used as a lingua franca. Encourage students to continue practicing and exploring the use of numerals in different contexts to solidify their learning.
