Meeting with the Present

Guided Meditation to Focus on the Lesson

1. Ask students to sit comfortably in their chairs, with their feet firmly planted on the ground and hands resting on their laps.

2. Request that they close their eyes and begin to pay attention to their breathing, slowly inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth.

3. Guide students to focus on the sensation of air entering and leaving their lungs, trying to keep their minds present and pushing away scattered thoughts.

4. After a minute of focused breathing, suggest that they imagine a calm and safe place where they feel completely relaxed.

5. Instruct them to visualize the details of that place, such as colors, sounds, and smells, allowing themselves to feel the tranquility and peace it provides.

6. After a few minutes of visualization, ask them to gradually start bringing their attention back to the classroom by moving their toes and fingers.

7. Finally, ask them to slowly open their eyes and take a few deep breaths, ready to begin the lesson with focus and presence.

Content Contextualization

The Renaissance was a period of cultural and intellectual rebirth that forever changed the way we see the world. Imagine living in a time when new ideas were emerging in every area - in art, science, politics, and trade. This period was an explosion of creativity and innovation that shaped European society in fundamental ways.

Just as the Renaissance marked a profound and positive change in history, today we will explore how we can recognize and regulate our emotions to promote positive changes in our own lives. Understanding how historical figures of the Renaissance dealt with their emotions and challenges can help us develop our own socioemotional skills, such as self-awareness and responsible decision-making.

Development

Duration: (60 - 75 minutes)

Theoretical Framework

Duration: (25 - 30 minutes)

1. Introduction to the Renaissance: The Renaissance was a cultural movement that occurred in Europe between the 14th and 17th centuries, marking the transition from the Middle Ages to the Modern Age. It began in Italy and spread throughout Europe, influencing various fields of knowledge and social life.

2. Main Characteristics of the Renaissance: The Renaissance is characterized by humanism, which places the human being at the center of the universe; the use of perspective in art; the rediscovery and appreciation of the Greco-Roman classical culture; and advances in sciences and geographical exploration.

3. Humanism: Humanism was an intellectual movement that emphasized the importance of education and the study of the humanities (literature, philosophy, history). It sought to rediscover and revive the values and knowledge of classical antiquity.

4. Advances in Art: During the Renaissance, art underwent significant transformations. Artists like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael developed innovative techniques, such as the use of perspective and chiaroscuro (light-dark), which brought greater realism to their works.

5. Contributions to Science: The Renaissance was also a period of great scientific advancements. Figures such as Copernicus, Galileo, and Vesalius made important discoveries that challenged medieval conceptions and paved the way for modern science.

6. Impact on Trade and Politics: The Renaissance influenced European trade and politics. The great navigations expanded international trade, while the emergence of nation-states and the strengthening of monarchical power changed the political structure of Europe.

7. Examples and Analogies: To illustrate, one can compare the Renaissance to a 'knowledge revolution' that brought a new way of thinking and seeing the world, similar to the digital revolution we experience today. Just as the internet democratized access to information, the Renaissance democratized access to knowledge through the invention of the printing press.

Socioemotional Feedback Activity

Duration: (30 - 35 minutes)

Exploring the Emotions of the Renaissance

In this activity, students will create a 'Character Diary' where they will put themselves in the place of a historical figure from the Renaissance. They should write about how this figure felt experiencing the cultural, social, and scientific transformations of the time, using the RULER method to recognize, understand, name, express, and regulate emotions.

1. Divide students into groups of 3 to 4 people.

2. Each group must choose a historical figure from the Renaissance (it can be an artist, scientist, merchant, etc.).

3. Distribute sheets of paper or notebooks for each group to write their 'Character Diary.'

4. Ask the groups to, using the RULER method, describe the emotions they believe their historical figure felt in light of the changes of the time.

5. Guide the students to recognize the emotions (joy, fear, curiosity, etc.), understand their causes and consequences, name them correctly, express them appropriately, and suggest ways to regulate those emotions.

6. After writing, each group should share their diary with the class, reading excerpts and discussing the emotions worked on.

Group Discussion

After the activity, lead a group discussion where each group shares the emotions they identified in their diaries and how they applied the RULER method. Ask: How do the emotions described by historical characters resemble the emotions you feel today when facing changes? Explore: What strategies do you use to regulate those emotions? Relate the experiences of Renaissance characters to the students' experiences, emphasizing the importance of self-awareness and self-control.

Suggest: that students reflect on how recognizing and regulating their own emotions can help them make responsible decisions and develop better social skills and social awareness. Encourage: the class to share personal examples of how they handle emotional or challenging situations, promoting a supportive and mutual learning environment.

Conclusion

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

Emotional Reflection and Regulation

Ask students to write a brief paragraph reflecting on the challenges they faced during the lesson and how they managed their emotions throughout the activities. Alternatively, lead a group discussion where each student can share their emotional experiences and the strategies they used to deal with challenging situations.

Objective: The objective of this subsection is to encourage students to self-assess their emotional experiences, identifying the effective strategies they used to manage their emotions. This helps develop emotional regulation skills and the ability to face future challenges more consciously and controlled.

Closure and A Look Into The Future

Explain to students the importance of setting personal and academic goals related to the content studied. Ask each student to write a personal goal and an academic goal they wish to achieve, considering the learning about the Renaissance and the socioemotional skills worked on in the lesson.

Possible Goal Ideas:

1. Deeply understand the concepts and impacts of the Renaissance.

2. Apply the RULER method in daily life to better manage emotions.

3. Improve historical research and analysis skills.

4. Develop the ability to work in groups and share knowledge.

5. Strengthen self-awareness and responsible decision-making. Objective: The objective of this subsection is to strengthen students' autonomy, encouraging them to apply their learning practically in their lives. Setting personal and academic goals aids in the continuity of both academic and personal development, promoting ongoing and meaningful learning.
