Pronouns and Adjectives: Demonstratives

Objectives (5 minutes)

  1. Understanding Concepts: Students should be able to understand what demonstrative pronouns and adjectives are and how they work in the English language. They should be able to differentiate between 'this' and 'that' (singular) and 'these' and 'those' (plural), and when to use them correctly.

  2. Practical Application: Students should be able to apply the knowledge gained in practical situations of oral and written communication. They should be able to form correct and understandable sentences using demonstrative pronouns and adjectives.

  3. Vocabulary Development: In addition, students should enrich their English vocabulary by learning to use demonstrative pronouns and adjectives to indicate the location or distance of an object in relation to themselves (the speaker) or to another person or mentioned object.

Secondary Objectives:

  • Listening Skills Development: During the lesson, students will also develop their listening skills as the teacher will use oral examples to illustrate the use of demonstrative pronouns and adjectives.

  • Reading and Writing Practice: Students will have the opportunity to practice their reading and writing skills as they will be encouraged to read and write sentences using demonstrative pronouns and adjectives.

Introduction (10 - 15 minutes)

  1. Content Review: The teacher should start the lesson by reminding students of basic concepts that will be necessary for understanding the current topic. This may include a quick recap of pronouns and adjectives in English, as well as a review of the difference between singular and plural. (3 - 5 minutes)

  2. Problem-Solving Scenarios: Next, the teacher should present two problem-solving scenarios involving the use of demonstrative pronouns and adjectives. One scenario could be the description of a classroom and the other the description of a shopping mall. Students will be invited to try to describe the situations in English, using the vocabulary they already have. The teacher should observe how many students incorrectly use demonstrative pronouns and adjectives and explain that this will be the focus of the lesson. (3 - 5 minutes)

  3. Contextualization: The teacher should then explain how demonstrative pronouns and adjectives are used in everyday life. It can be mentioned that they are used to point out or indicate the location of something, and that they are very common in everyday conversations as well as in written texts. This can be illustrated with concrete examples, such as indicating where an object is in a room, or describing people in different parts of a shopping mall. (2 - 3 minutes)

  4. Engaging Students' Attention: To engage students' attention, the teacher can share some curiosities about demonstrative pronouns and adjectives. For example, it can be mentioned that in some languages, like Japanese, there are more demonstrative pronouns and adjectives than in English, and that they can be used in very specific ways to indicate the location of something. Additionally, the teacher can share some useful tips on how to use demonstrative pronouns and adjectives correctly in English, such as the rule of using 'this' for things that are close to you and 'that' for things that are farther away. (2 - 3 minutes)

Development (20 - 25 minutes)

  1. Role-Playing Activity: The teacher should divide the class into groups of 4 or 5 students. Each group will receive a different situation to simulate. For example, one group may be tasked with simulating a situation in a restaurant, another group may simulate a situation in a clothing store, and so on. Each group should prepare a short dialogue in English involving the use of demonstrative pronouns and adjectives. The dialogue should include questions and answers using demonstrative pronouns and adjectives to indicate the location of something. After some preparation time, each group should present their dialogue to the class. The teacher should observe and correct any errors in the use of demonstrative pronouns and adjectives. (10 - 15 minutes)

  2. Matching Activity: The teacher should prepare several cards, each with a sentence using a demonstrative pronoun or adjective. For example, one card may say 'This is my book' and another card may say 'That is his pencil'. Students should be paired up and each pair should receive a set of cards. The goal of the activity is for students to correctly match the demonstrative pronouns and adjectives with the corresponding images or objects. For example, if the card says 'This is my book', students should find a book in the classroom and place the card next to it. This activity will help students understand the concept of location demonstration. (5 - 7 minutes)

  3. Writing Activity: Finally, students should be asked to write a short composition describing a location of their choice (for example, their room, the classroom, the park, etc.). They should be encouraged to use as many demonstrative pronouns and adjectives as possible to indicate the location of the objects they are describing. This activity will help students practice using demonstrative pronouns and adjectives in a broader context and develop their writing skills. The teacher should walk around the room, assisting students with their compositions and correcting any errors in the use of demonstrative pronouns and adjectives. (5 - 7 minutes)

Feedback (10 - 15 minutes)

  1. Group Discussion: The teacher should facilitate a group discussion about the solutions or conclusions reached by each team during the role-playing and matching activities. Each team will have the opportunity to share their solutions and explain how they used demonstrative pronouns and adjectives correctly. This will allow students to learn from each other, reinforce what they have learned, and clarify any doubts they may have. The teacher should monitor the discussion and intervene when necessary to correct errors or provide additional explanations. (5 - 7 minutes)

  2. Connection to Theory: The teacher should then make the connection between the practical activities carried out and the theory presented at the beginning of the lesson. The teacher can remind students of the concepts of demonstrative pronouns and adjectives and explain how they were applied in the activities. It can also briefly discuss any difficulties or challenges students faced when trying to apply the theory in practice, and how they were overcome. This discussion will help students consolidate what they have learned and understand the relevance of the topic for communication in English. (3 - 5 minutes)

  3. Individual Reflection: Finally, the teacher should ask students to reflect individually on what they have learned in the lesson. They should think about the following questions:

    1. What was the most important concept you learned today?
    2. What questions have not been answered yet?

Students should be encouraged to write down their answers and share them with the teacher. The teacher can use these answers to assess the effectiveness of the lesson and plan future learning sessions. (2 - 3 minutes)

  4. Review and Closure: The teacher should then briefly review the main points of the lesson, highlighting the most important concepts and clarifying any remaining doubts. The teacher should end the lesson by reinforcing the importance of using demonstrative pronouns and adjectives correctly in English communication and encouraging students to continue practicing what they have learned. (1 - 2 minutes)

Conclusion (5 - 10 minutes)

  1. Content Summary: The teacher should start the Conclusion by recalling the main points of the lesson. This will include the definition of demonstrative pronouns and adjectives, the difference between 'this' and 'that' (singular) and 'these' and 'those' (plural), and how they are used to indicate the location or distance of an object in relation to another person or object. The teacher should also reinforce the practical examples that were used during the lesson to illustrate the use of demonstrative pronouns and adjectives. (2 - 3 minutes)

  2. Connection between Theory and Practice: Next, the teacher should explain how the lesson connected theory to practice. This may include a discussion on the role-playing, matching, and writing activities, and how they allowed students to apply what they learned in a practical and meaningful way. The teacher should emphasize that practice is essential for mastering any new concept, and that students should continue to practice using demonstrative pronouns and adjectives outside the classroom to reinforce what they have learned. (1 - 2 minutes)

  3. Extra Materials: The teacher should then suggest some extra materials for students to explore if they want to deepen their understanding of demonstrative pronouns and adjectives. This may include English learning websites like Duolingo or Babbel, English grammar books, or even TV shows or movies in English, where students can hear demonstrative pronouns and adjectives being used in real contexts. The teacher should emphasize that self-directed practice is a crucial part of learning any new language, and that students should make the most of these resources. (1 - 2 minutes)

  4. Importance of the Topic: Finally, the teacher should end the lesson by reinforcing the importance of using demonstrative pronouns and adjectives correctly in English communication. The teacher can explain that incorrect use of these words can lead to misunderstandings and hinder effective communication. On the other hand, correct use of demonstrative pronouns and adjectives can help English speakers express themselves clearly and understand others. The teacher should encourage students to pay special attention to the use of these words in their daily readings and conversations, and to correct themselves whenever they realize they have used them incorrectly. (1 - 2 minutes)
