Objectives

Duration: 10 to 15 minutes

The purpose of this stage is to establish a clear and focused foundation for the lesson topic, allowing students to understand precisely what is expected of them in terms of learning and development throughout the lesson. This creates a directed environment where everyone knows the central objectives and how the content will be explored.

Main Objectives

1. Differentiate the main types of lenses: converging and diverging.

2. Verify the specific properties and characteristics of each type of lens.

Side Objectives

  1. Stimulate students' critical and analytical thinking by exploring practical examples.
  2. Incorporate digital and modern contexts to facilitate understanding of the content.

Introduction

Duration: 15 to 20 minutes

The purpose of this stage is to provide an initial connection for students with the topic, using digital tools that are part of their daily lives. This also promotes curiosity and engagement from the start of the lesson while encouraging the critical use of technology for information research.

Warming Up

To start the lesson on lenses, quickly explain that lenses are optical devices that refract light to form images. Mention that there are two main types of lenses: converging and diverging. Then, ask the students to use their phones to research an interesting fact about lenses. Give them 5 minutes to find and share their discoveries with the class.

Initial Reflections

1. What is the fundamental difference between converging and diverging lenses?

2. How does the shape of the lenses affect how light is refracted?

3. Can you cite examples of situations or devices in daily life where these lenses are used?

4. What are the main characteristics of a converging lens and a diverging lens?

5. How can lenses be used to correct vision problems?

Development

Duration: 70 to 80 minutes

The purpose of this stage is to provide students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge about lenses in a practical and collaborative way, using digital tools that are part of their daily lives. This not only reinforces the content learned but also develops communication, creativity, and problem-solving skills in a modern and digital context.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended that only one of the suggested activities be carried out

Activity 1 - Creating Educational Stories on Instagram

> Duration: 60 to 70 minutes

- Objective: Provide a practical and interactive learning experience about lenses through a digital platform familiar to students, encouraging creativity and teamwork.

- Description: Students will create a series of Instagram stories explaining the differences between converging and diverging lenses, their properties, and practical examples of use in daily life. Each group must use filters, stickers, and text to make the content more interactive and informative.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of up to 5 students.

  • Each group must choose one of the types of lenses (converging or diverging) to explore.

  • Using their phones, students should create a sequence of Instagram stories explaining:

  • The definition of the chosen lens.

  • The properties and characteristics of the lens.

  • Examples of where this lens is used in everyday life.

  • The stories must be creative, using graphic elements such as stickers, filters, and texts to make the content more interactive.

  • At the end, each group must share the link to their stories with the class and make a small presentation explaining the created content.

Activity 2 - Virtual Escape Room Challenge: Science of Lenses

> Duration: 60 to 70 minutes

- Objective: Encourage collaboration and critical thinking through a gamified activity that integrates lens content in an engaging and challenging way.

- Description: Students will participate in a virtual escape room challenge where they need to solve puzzles and problems related to converging and diverging lenses to progress through the stages and complete the mission. The platform used will be an educational escape room website.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of up to 5 students.

  • Each group must access the escape room website indicated by the teacher.

  • Students must work together to solve puzzles and problems related to lenses, such as identifying types of lenses in different situations and explaining their properties.

  • Each group will have to complete all stages of the escape room to 'escape' virtually.

  • During the activity, students can use phones and computers to research additional information if needed.

  • At the end of the challenge, each group must present a brief report on the difficulties faced and the solutions found.

Activity 3 - Scientific Influencers: Video for YouTube

> Duration: 60 to 70 minutes

- Objective: Encourage creativity and scientific communication through digital content production, while deepening students' understanding of lens properties.

- Description: Students will create an explanatory video for YouTube where they must act as scientific influencers, presenting the properties and characteristics of converging and diverging lenses in a fun and informative way. The video must be edited and published on the class's channel.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of up to 5 students.

  • Each group must choose one of the types of lenses (converging or diverging) to explore.

  • Students should plan a script for an explanatory video, including:

  • Definition of the chosen lens.

  • Properties and characteristics of the lenses.

  • Practical demonstrations or visual examples.

  • Each group must record the video using their phone.

  • The videos should be edited using editing software available on their phones or computers.

  • After editing, groups must publish the videos on the class's YouTube channel and share the link with everyone.

  • Groups will do a live presentation of the video and answer questions from classmates.

Feedback

Group Discussion

️ Group Discussion: Promote a group discussion with all students, where groups share what they learned while conducting the experience and their conclusions. Suggest a brief script that the teacher can use to introduce this discussion.

Suggested Script:

  1. Introduction: Begin by briefly recalling the objectives of the lesson on lenses.
  2. Sharing: Invite each group to share their experiences, discoveries, and conclusions about the activities carried out (Instagram stories, virtual escape room, and YouTube videos).
  3. Highlights: Ask students what the most challenging aspects were and what they found most interesting about the activities.
  4. Real Applications: Discuss how the knowledge gained can be applied in everyday situations or in other subjects.

Reflections

1.Reflection Questions:

  1. What are the main differences between converging and diverging lenses?
  2. How do the characteristics of these lenses influence their use in everyday devices?
  3. How did the digital activities help to better understand the concepts of lenses?

360° Feedback

360° Feedback: Instruct students to conduct a 360° feedback step, where each student must receive feedback from others in the group they worked with on the activity. Guide the class to ensure that the feedback is constructive and respectful.

Guidance Points:

  1. Positive: Start by highlighting one thing that the peer did well during the activity.
  2. Improvement: Mention one area where the peer could improve by offering practical suggestions.
  3. General: Conclude with general observations about teamwork and how it was to work together.

Conclusion

Duration: 10 to 15 minutes

Purpose: The purpose of this stage is to consolidate learning in a fun and memorable way, ensuring that students understand the relevance of the content in everyday life. Emphasizing how the topic applies to the modern world and its technologies helps to solidify knowledge and value the study of physical sciences.

Summary

Class Summary: Imagine you are a light detective, solving optical mysteries! Today we unveiled the secrets of converging and diverging lenses. Converging lenses focus light to a point, while diverging lenses spread light in various directions.  During our journey, we discovered that lenses are not only components of glasses and cameras but also of microscopes and telescopes! 

World Connection

In the Current World: In today's hyper-connected world, lenses are in our smartphones, webcams, and even in instruments used in space exploration. Understanding how these lenses work allows us to better comprehend the technologies we use daily and how they shape our perception of the world. 

Practical Application

️ Applications: Knowledge about lenses is fundamental for correcting vision problems, optimizing optical devices, and advancing science and technology. The next time you use a camera or adjust your glasses, remember the little light detectives working behind the scenes!
