  2. Present two problem situations related to the use of technology in English learning:

    • "Imagine you are working on an English assignment at home, and you have a question or need some clarification. You don't have immediate access to your teacher or classmates. How can technology, specifically the internet, help you in this situation?"
    • "You are reading a book in English, and you come across a word or phrase that you don't understand. How can you use technology to find the meaning and enhance your understanding?" (3 minutes)

The teacher can also highlight that the ability to use technology effectively is a crucial skill for future careers, and the earlier they start learning and practicing, the better. (2 minutes)

  4. Grab the students' attention by sharing two curiosities related to the topic:

    • "Did you know that the first message sent over the internet was 'LO' which was supposed to be 'LOGIN', but the system crashed after just two letters?"
    • "Have you ever wondered how many websites are there on the internet? Well, as of October 2021, there are over 1.7 billion websites!" (3 minutes)

Development

Pre-Class Activities (10 - 15 minutes)

The teacher will:

  1. Assign the students to watch a short, educational video about the importance of the internet in education and its specific relevance to English learning. The video should be engaging, age-appropriate, and clearly explain the topic. The teacher will provide the link to the video via the school's learning management system or email. (5 minutes)

  2. Ask the students to write a brief reflection piece (approximately 100 words) on what they learned from the video. The reflection should include their thoughts, questions, and any connections they made between the video and their own learning experiences. The teacher will collect the reflections at the beginning of the next class. (5 minutes)

  3. Suggest the students browse through a list of recommended websites and apps for English learning, such as Duolingo, BBC Learning English, and EnglishClub. The students should explore the sites and apps briefly, noting down their first impressions and any resources that pique their interest. (5 minutes)

The students will:

  1. Watch the assigned video at home, taking notes on the main points and any questions or thoughts that come up.

  2. Write their reflections, focusing on their understanding of the video's content and how it connects to their own learning journey.

  3. Visit the suggested websites and apps, exploring the resources these platforms offer and forming initial opinions about their usefulness and appropriateness for their learning needs.

In-Class Activities (20 - 25 minutes)

Activity 1: The Internet Scavenger Hunt (10 - 12 minutes)

The teacher will:

  1. Divide the class into groups of four to five students and assign each group a specific topic related to English learning, such as vocabulary building, grammar, reading comprehension, or writing skills. The teacher will provide a list of questions related to the topic, and the students will have to find the answers on the internet. The teacher will also provide a worksheet for the students to record their answers. (1 minute)

  2. Explain the rules of the game: Each group will have ten minutes to find as many correct answers as possible. The group that finds the most correct answers wins. However, accuracy is more important than speed, so if a group finds more answers but has more incorrect ones, they may not necessarily win. (2 minutes)

  3. Show the students a demonstration of how to effectively search for information on the internet using search engines, keywords, and filtering options. They will also highlight the importance of critically evaluating the sources of the information they find. (3 minutes)

The students will:

  1. Receive their group assignment and read through the questions related to their topic.

  2. Discuss and decide on a strategy for finding the answers, considering the demonstration they have just seen.

  3. Use their devices to search for the answers, recording the correct ones on their worksheets.

  4. Discuss and evaluate the information they find, comparing it to what they have learned in class.

Activity 2: My Online Resource (10 - 13 minutes)

The teacher will:

  1. Ask each group to share one useful online resource they found during the scavenger hunt related to their assigned topic. They should explain briefly how it can help with English learning and why they find it helpful or interesting. (2 minutes)

  2. Encourage other groups to ask questions or provide their thoughts on the presented resource. (2 minutes)

  3. Summarize the online resources shared by the groups on the board, creating a class "English Learning Toolkit" for everyone to use. (2 minutes)

  4. Discuss with the students the importance of sharing and collaboration in the digital age, emphasizing that the internet not only provides access to a vast amount of information but also connects people and promotes learning communities. (2 minutes)

The students will:

  1. Take turns presenting their chosen online resource to the class, ensuring that each group member gets a chance to participate.

  2. Engage in the discussion, asking questions, and sharing their thoughts on the presented resources.

  3. Take note of the resources presented by other groups, adding any that they find particularly interesting or useful to their own "English Learning Toolkit".

By the end of the in-class activities, the students should have a better understanding of how they can use the internet to enhance their English learning. They should also have a list of reliable online resources that they can use in their future learning and share with their classmates.

Feedback (10 - 15 minutes)

The teacher will:

  1. Initiate a whole-class discussion where each group presents their answers from the Internet Scavenger Hunt. The teacher will provide feedback on the accuracy and relevance of the information found by each group. They will also facilitate a discussion about the process of finding and evaluating information on the internet, emphasizing the importance of critical thinking and skepticism. (5 minutes)

  2. Ask each group to share the online resource they found most valuable during the scavenger hunt. The teacher will then lead a discussion about how this resource can be used to enhance English learning, encouraging other students to share their thoughts and experiences with the resource. (3 minutes)

  3. Conduct a short reflection activity to help students internalize their learning. The teacher will ask the following questions and give the students a minute to think and respond:

    • "What was the most important concept you learned today?" (1 minute)
    • "What questions do you still have about using the internet for English learning?" (1 minute)
  4. After the reflection, the teacher will invite a few students to share their responses to the reflection questions. The teacher will then address any remaining questions and provide further clarification or examples as needed. (3 minutes)

The students will:

  1. During the whole-class discussion, actively listen to the presentations of other groups and participate in the discussion about the presented resources.

  2. Engage in the reflection activity, thinking about their learning and formulating their responses to the reflection questions.

  3. Share their responses to the reflection questions, contributing to the class's understanding of the topic and raising any remaining questions or concerns.

By the end of the feedback stage, the students should have a clear understanding of what they have learned from the lesson and how they can apply these new skills and knowledge in their English learning. They should also feel confident in their ability to use the internet as a valuable tool in their education.

Conclusion (3 - 5 minutes)

    • "Today, we learned about the importance of the internet in English learning and explored various online resources and tools that can enhance our skills in vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, and writing."

    • "For more online resources for English learning, you can check out the website 'English Learning Resources' that we used in our scavenger hunt today. It provides a comprehensive list of free and paid resources for all English levels and skills." (1 minute)
  4. Encourage students to continue using the internet for their English learning, reminding them of the importance of responsible and safe internet use:

    • "Remember, while the internet is a powerful learning tool, it's essential to use it responsibly and safely. Always double-check the information you find, be mindful of your privacy and security, and treat others with respect in online communities." (1 minute)

The students will:

  1. Listen attentively to the teacher's conclusion, internalizing the key points of the lesson, and thinking about how these apply to their own learning journey.
