Premises: This Active Lesson Plan assumes: a 100-minute class duration, prior student study both with the Book and the beginning of Project development, and that only one activity (among the three suggested) will be chosen to be carried out during the class, as each activity is designed to take up a large part of the available time.

Objective

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The objectives stage serves to clearly outline what students should learn and comprehend by the lesson's conclusion, establishing clear learning goals. Here, these objectives are crucial for students to grasp the intricacies of the Cold War while recognizing how bipolarity affected international relations and shaped global history. This clarity also helps steer classroom activities and discussions, ensuring that both students' and the teacher's efforts align with the desired learning outcomes.

Objective Utama:

1. Define the Cold War, identifying its main characteristics and the historical context that led to it.

2. Analyze the division of the world into two superpowers: the United States and the Soviet Union, emphasizing their influences and the consequences for global affairs.

Objective Tambahan:

  1. Enhance skills in argumentation and debate, allowing students to discuss and confront various perspectives on the topic.

Introduction

Duration: (20 - 25 minutes)

The aim of the introduction is to engage students while revisiting prior knowledge by utilizing problem situations that encourage critical thinking about the complexities of the Cold War. It also focuses on contextualizing the relevance of studying this topic through real-life examples, sparking interest and curiosity among students.

Problem-Based Situation

1. Imagine you are a leader of a neutral country during the Cold War and uncover that one of the superpowers is undertaking covert operations in your territory. What actions should your nation take to uphold its independence?

2. Consider a scenario where a scientist in your country stumbles upon groundbreaking technology that could reshape the balance of power between the US and the USSR. What ethical and political dilemmas might they face when deciding whether to disclose this technology to their government?

Contextualization

The Cold War was much more than a military stand-off; it was a contest of ideologies and cultural influences. For instance, the space race between the US and the USSR not only resulted in the historic Moon landing but also spurred innovations that we rely on today. Moreover, events like the Cuban Missile Crisis illustrate how the choices of a handful of individuals could have dramatically altered the course of history.

Development

Duration: (70 - 80 minutes)

The development phase is structured to enable students to apply and expand their understanding of the Cold War through simulations and hands-on activities. By collaborating in groups, they hone their teamwork skills, critical thinking, and decision-making abilities in complex contexts while delving into the nuances of the era's international relations. These activities not only reinforce theoretical knowledge but also stimulate student engagement and curiosity.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended that only one of the suggested activities be carried out
