Lesson plan of Vocabulary: Main Adjectives

English

Original Teachy

Vocabulary: Main Adjectives

Objectives

Time: 5 minutes

  1. Understanding English Adjectives: Students should be able to understand what adjectives are and how they function in the English Language. This includes understanding that adjectives are used to describe or give more information about a noun.

  2. Identifying Adjectives: Students should be able to identify an adjective within an English sentence. This involves recognizing that adjectives typically come before the noun they are modifying.

  3. Applying Adjectives: Students should be able to correctly apply adjectives in their own English sentences. Furthermore, they should be able to use different adjectives to describe the same thing and understand how this can change the meaning of the sentence.

Accompanying Objectives:

  • Vocabulary Expansion: Students should be able to expand their English vocabulary by learning new adjectives and how to use them.

  • Communicative Improvement: With correct application of adjectives, students should be able to express themselves more accurately and effectively in English.

Introduction

Time: 10-15 minutes

  1. Review of Prior Concepts:

    • The teacher should begin the lesson by reviewing the concept of nouns in English, as adjectives are used to describe them.
    • It is also important to review the word order of an English sentence, as adjectives typically come before the nouns they modify.
  2. Problem-Based Situations:

    • The teacher may pose 2 English sentences that lack adjectives and ask the students to modify the sentence and include an adjective that describes the noun in each sentence.
    • Another problem-based approach would be to present two sentences describing the same thing, but with different adjectives, and ask the students to discuss how the meaning of the sentence changes with the change of adjective.
  3. Contextualization:

    • The teacher should explain to the students that adjectives are used extensively in the English language to describe people, places, things, and ideas.
    • It is important to stress that by learning to use adjectives correctly, students will be able to express themselves more accurately and effectively, which is essential for communication in English.
  4. Introduction to the Topic:

    • The teacher can introduce the topic of adjectives in English by telling a short but engaging story that involves describing people, places or things.
    • Another way to capture the students attention about the topic is to present a list of common adjectives in English and have the students try to guess what each adjective means by relating them to words in their own native language.

This set of activities should prepare the students for the active and engaging learning that will take place throughout the rest of the lesson.

Development

Time: 20-25 minutes

  1. Activity 1: "Adjectives in Music" (10-15 minutes):

    • The teacher must have previously selected an English song that contains a variety of adjectives. Ideally the song should be somewhat familiar to the students.
    • Before playing the song, the teacher should distribute the song lyrics to the students. However, the adjectives in the lyrics should be omitted.
    • The students, in groups of 4 or 5, should listen to the song and try to identify the missing adjectives from the lyrics. They should write down any adjectives they are able to identify.
    • After the activity, each group should share the adjectives they identified with the class. The teacher should correct and provide feedback.
  2. Activity 2: "Real-Life Adjectives" (10-15 minutes):

    • The teacher should prepare a set of cards with images of objects, people, places, etc. Each card should have a blank space for the students to fill in an adjective.
    • The students, still in groups, should each be given a set of cards. They should discuss and agree on one adjective for each card based on the appearance or characteristics of whatever is shown in the picture.
    • After filling out all of their cards, the groups should trade their sets of cards. They should take turns reading the adjective out loud and guessing what is being described without looking at the picture.
    • This activity promotes the practical application of adjectives and allows the students to see how adjectives can alter the way something is perceived or understood.
  3. Activity 3: "Creating Sentences with Adjectives" (5-10 minutes):

    • The teacher should provide each student with a card with a noun written on it. The students should think of an adjective to describe the noun on their card.
    • The students should then circulate around the room and find other students with different nouns. They should exchange cards and write a sentence that uses the adjective from the card they received to describe the noun on the card they gave.
    • This activity promotes the practice of identifying, applying, and contextualizing adjectives, while also encouraging interaction and collaboration among the students.

These fun and interactive activities will help the students to internalize the concept of adjectives and to develop their skills in identifying and applying adjectives in English.

Feedback

Time: 10-15 minutes

  1. Group Discussion (5-7 minutes):

    • The teacher should organize a group discussion where each team will share their findings and solutions encountered during the activities. Each group will have a maximum of three minutes to present.
    • During the presentation the teacher should encourage the students to explain how they chose the adjectives for each situation and how that affected the meaning of the sentence.
    • This group discussion will allow the students to learn from each other, see different approaches to the same tasks, and further develop their communication and presentation skills.
  2. Connection to Theory (3-5 minutes):

    • Following the discussion, the teacher should revisit the theoretical concepts that were introduced at the beginning of the lesson and explain how they relate to the practical activities that were carried out.
    • The teacher should highlight the adjectives that the students identified, explaining their function in the sentence, and how they modify the noun.
    • This step is crucial in helping the students make the connection between theory and practice, consolidating their understanding of the usage of adjectives in English.
  3. Individual Reflection (2-3 minutes):

    • The teacher should ask the students to quietly reflect on their learning. To do this, the teacher may ask questions such as:
      1. What was the most important concept learned today?
      2. What questions still remain unanswered?
    • The students should have a minute to think about these questions on their own.
    • After the reflection time, the teacher may ask a few students to share their answers with the class. This can help identify any concepts that students still may not fully understand and need to be revisited in future lessons.
  4. Feedback and Closure (1-2 minutes):

    • To conclude the lesson, the teacher should provide general feedback on the class performance, praising their effort and highlighting areas that need improvement.
    • The teacher should reinforce the importance of using adjectives correctly in English communication and encourage the students to continue practicing this skill outside of class.
    • Finally, the teacher can provide a brief preview of what will be covered in the next class, thus creating a smooth transition to the following topic.

The feedback and closure portion of the lesson is essential for solidifying the students’ learning, allowing them to reflect on what they have learned and to identify any areas that may need further review or practice.

Conclusion

Time: 5-7 minutes

  1. Content Summary (2-3 minutes):

    • The teacher should begin the Conclusion by summarizing the key points that were covered during the lesson. This includes the definition of adjectives, their function in an English sentence, and how they can be used to describe or modify a noun.
    • The teacher should also reinforce the main skills that were developed during the lesson, such as identifying adjectives in sentences and correctly applying adjectives in speech and writing.
  2. Connection of Theory, Practice, and Applications (1-2 minutes):

    • The teacher should explain how the lesson connected the theory (concepts of adjectives) to the practice (adjective identification and application activities) to real-world applications (importance of using adjectives correctly in English communication).
    • It should be highlighted that the practical activities allowed the students to experience using the theoretical concepts in real-life situations, and how that helped solidify their understanding of the topic.
  3. Extension Materials (1-2 minutes):

    • The teacher should suggest additional resources for students to further their learning on the topic. This may include English language learning websites, textbooks, educational videos, and language learning apps.
    • Additionally, the teacher could suggest further practice activities, such as writing short texts using the adjectives learned or trying to describe people, places, or things in English using only adjectives.
  4. Real-World Significance of Topic (1 minute):

    • In closing, the teacher should emphasize the real-world significance of the topic of adjectives. It should be explained that by learning to use adjectives correctly, students will be able to express themselves more accurately and effectively in English, which is essential for effective communication.
    • The teacher can provide real-life examples of situations where using adjectives correctly is important, such as in a job interview, when describing a product or service, or when expressing feelings and emotions.

This conclusion will help to reinforce what the students learned during the lesson, connect the theory to the practice, and highlight the relevance of the topic to their own lives. Furthermore, it will provide students with resources and motivation to continue learning about the topic outside of the classroom.
