Vocabulary: Fun and Leisure

Objectives (5 - 7 minutes)

  1. Develop vocabulary related to fun and leisure in English: The teacher must ensure that students understand and are able to correctly use vocabulary related to entertainment and leisure activities in English. This would include words and phrases related to hobbies, sports, games, board games, among others.

  2. Practice correct pronunciation of these words and phrases: In addition to understanding the meaning of words and phrases, it is essential that students are able to pronounce them correctly. The teacher should encourage the practice of correct pronunciation from the beginning of the lesson, using examples and interactive exercises.

  3. Apply vocabulary in practical situations: The ultimate goal is for students to be able to use the vocabulary learned to describe their own leisure activities, talk to others about their fun preferences, and understand texts and conversations in English that involve these topics. The teacher should, therefore, encourage the practical application of vocabulary throughout the lesson.

Secondary Objectives:

  • Develop listening and reading skills in English: By introducing vocabulary in context, the teacher should take the opportunity to practice students' listening and reading skills. This can be done through listening to dialogues or reading texts that involve vocabulary related to fun and leisure.

  • Promote interaction in English: The teacher should encourage active participation from students, promoting interaction in English. This can be done through activities in pairs or groups, where students are encouraged to use the vocabulary learned to communicate with each other.

Introduction (10 - 12 minutes)

  1. Content review: The teacher should start the lesson by briefly reviewing related topics that have been discussed in previous classes, such as general vocabulary, verbs, and common expressions. This will serve as a solid foundation for introducing the new vocabulary. (3 - 4 minutes)

  2. Problem situations: Next, the teacher should present two situations that require the use of vocabulary related to fun and leisure. For example:

    • Situation 1: 'Imagine you are at an amusement park in the United States. How would you describe the different attractions to a friend who doesn't speak Portuguese?'
    • Situation 2: 'You are watching an American football game on TV, but the broadcast is in English. What words and phrases would you need to know to understand what's happening?' (3 - 4 minutes)
  3. Contextualization: The teacher should then explain the importance of vocabulary related to fun and leisure in everyday life, emphasizing how these words and phrases are often used in movies, series, books, and daily conversations. Additionally, the relevance of this vocabulary in practical situations, such as when traveling or communicating with people from different cultures, can be mentioned. (2 - 3 minutes)

  4. Capturing students' attention: To introduce the topic in an interesting way, the teacher can share some curiosities about games, sports, or leisure activities from English-speaking countries. For example, the origin of the board game 'Monopoly' in the United States, the popularity of sports like American football and basketball, or the tradition of 'pubs' in the United Kingdom. These curiosities will not only spark students' interest but also help contextualize the vocabulary that will be learned. (2 - 3 minutes)

Development (20 - 25 minutes)

  1. Activity 1: Vocabulary Board Game (10 - 12 minutes)

    • Preparation: The teacher should create a board game with squares containing words and phrases related to fun and leisure in English. Additionally, there will be 'challenges' on some squares, where students will have to use the words and phrases in a sentence or in a brief conversation. The teacher should also prepare extra vocabulary cards to be used in case of a tie.
    • Execution: Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 4 people. Each team will have a marker to advance on the board. The team that starts will be determined by a coin toss. The teacher will act as the 'judge' of the game, reading the words and phrases and evaluating if they were used correctly in the challenges.
    • Objective: The goal of the game is to reach the end of the board first. However, to advance, the team must first correctly use a word or phrase from a square and then win a challenge. This will help reinforce the vocabulary and practice using the words and phrases in context.
  2. Activity 2: Creating a Dialogue (10 - 12 minutes)

    • Preparation: The teacher should pair up the students. Each pair will receive a set of words and phrases related to fun and leisure in English. The words and phrases can be printed on cards or projected on the board. The teacher should ensure there is a variety of words and phrases to choose from, including some that may be more challenging.
    • Execution: The students, in their pairs, should create a short dialogue (approximately 5 lines) using as many words and phrases from the set they received. They will have a few minutes to discuss and plan the dialogue. Then, each pair will present their dialogue to the class.
    • Objective: The goal of this activity is to allow students to practice using the vocabulary in a conversational context. Additionally, the dialogue creation activity promotes creativity and collaboration among students.
  3. Activity 3: Pronunciation Challenge (5 - 7 minutes)

    • Preparation: The teacher should prepare a list of difficult-to-pronounce words and phrases for the students. These words and phrases can be taken from previous activities or can be from new vocabularies.
    • Execution: The teacher will read each word or phrase aloud, and the students will try to repeat it. The teacher should provide immediate feedback on pronunciation, correcting errors and praising efforts.
    • Objective: The goal of this activity is to improve students' pronunciation, especially regarding more challenging words and phrases. Additionally, the activity promotes students' confidence in pronouncing words in English.

Feedback (8 - 10 minutes)

  1. Group Discussion (3 - 4 minutes)

    • The teacher should gather all students and start a group discussion about the solutions or conclusions found by each team during the activities.
    • The teacher can start by asking each team what was the most challenging word or phrase they encountered in the board game and how they overcame the challenge.
    • Next, each pair of students who presented a dialogue can be asked what was the most difficult part of creating the dialogue and how they solved the problem.
    • The goal of this discussion is to allow students to share their learning experiences and learn from each other.
  2. Connection to Theory (2 - 3 minutes)

    • The teacher should then make the connection between the practical activities and the theory presented in the Introduction of the lesson.
    • For example, the teacher can highlight how the board game activity helped reinforce the vocabulary of fun and leisure, and how the dialogue creation activity allowed students to apply this vocabulary in a conversational context.
    • This step is crucial to consolidate learning and ensure that students understand the relevance and practical application of what they have learned.
  3. Individual Reflection (2 - 3 minutes)

    • Finally, the teacher should ask students to take a moment to reflect individually on what they learned in the lesson. The teacher can ask questions like:
      1. 'What was the most important concept you learned today?'
      2. 'What questions have not been answered yet?'
    • Students should be encouraged to write down their reflections and, if possible, share them with the class. This reflection practice helps students internalize what they have learned and identify any gaps in their understanding, which can then be addressed in future lessons.
  4. Teacher's Feedback (1 minute)

    • The teacher should give overall feedback on the lesson, praising students' efforts and highlighting the group's strengths.
    • The teacher can also point out areas for improvement for the next lesson, encouraging students to continue practicing vocabulary and pronunciation at home.

Conclusion (5 - 7 minutes)

  1. Content Summary (2 - 3 minutes)

    • The teacher should review the main points covered during the lesson, recalling the vocabulary of fun and leisure in English that was taught and practiced.
    • Additionally, the teacher should recap the skills developed by students, such as the ability to use vocabulary in practical contexts, improve pronunciation and listening comprehension, and the ability to work in teams and communicate effectively in English.
  2. Connection between Theory, Practice, and Applications (1 - 2 minutes)

    • The teacher should emphasize how the lesson connected the theory, practice, and applications of vocabulary related to fun and leisure in English.
    • For example, the board game allowed students to practice vocabulary in a playful and contextualized way, while the dialogue creation activity helped them apply the vocabulary in real communication situations.
    • The teacher can also mention how these skills and knowledge can be applied in students' daily lives, whether in their interactions with native English speakers, in travel situations, or in future studies.
  3. Extra Materials (1 - 2 minutes)

    • The teacher should suggest extra materials for students who want to deepen their knowledge of vocabulary related to fun and leisure in English.
    • These materials may include English learning websites, vocabulary apps, online games, movies, series, and books in English that address the theme of fun and leisure.
    • The teacher can also provide a list of additional words and phrases for students to study at home.
  4. Importance of the Subject (1 minute)

    • Finally, the teacher should emphasize the importance of vocabulary related to fun and leisure in English for students' everyday lives.
    • It can be mentioned how this vocabulary is useful in travel situations, when communicating with people from different cultures, in academic and professional contexts, and even in entertainment activities, such as watching movies and series in English.
    • The teacher should encourage students to continue practicing and exploring the vocabulary on their own, highlighting how learning English can open doors and opportunities in their lives.
