Assumptions: This Active Lesson Plan assumes: a 100-minute class, prior student study with both the Book and the start of Project development, and that only one activity (among the three suggested) will be chosen to be conducted during the class, as each activity is designed to take up a significant portion of the available time.

Objectives

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The objective stage is crucial to establish the focus of the lesson and ensure that students clearly understand what is expected of them. By defining specific objectives, students can better direct their learning efforts and application in class. This section also serves to align expectations between teacher and students, ensuring that the pre-studied content is consolidated and that new concepts are explored effectively.

Main Objectives:

1. Understand that the verb is the core of the predicate in sentences, identifying its importance in structuring sentences.

2. Differentiate the types of verbs (action, linking, and natural phenomena) through practical examples and identification exercises.

Side Objectives:

  1. Encourage active participation from students through debates and discussions about the practical use of verbs in daily life.

Introduction

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

The introduction aims to engage students with the content they previously studied, using problem situations that encourage the practical application of knowledge about verbs. Additionally, contextualization seeks to show the relevance of verbs in real and everyday situations, laying the groundwork for a more in-depth and applied discussion during the class.

Problem-Based Situations

1. Imagine that a journalist is writing a report. What kind of verbs would they use to describe the actions of the characters, the connection between events, and phenomena that occur naturally?

2. Think of a situation where you have to describe a typical day in the life of a student. Which verbs would be most appropriate to describe daily actions (action verbs), states or characteristics (linking verbs), and natural phenomena (phenomena verbs)?

Contextualization

Understanding the different types of verbs is essential not only for grammar but also for the ability to communicate effectively in various situations. For example, knowing how to correctly use an action verb can make all the difference in recounting a personal experience or conveying information in a professional setting. In addition, understanding linking verbs is crucial for expressing states and sensations, fundamental in literature and poetry. Curiosities about the origin and evolution of verbs can also enrich understanding and spark students' interest.

Development

Duration: (70 - 75 minutes)

The development stage is designed to allow students to practically and interactively apply the concepts studied about verbs. By working in groups, students have the opportunity to discuss and explore content in a collaborative context, which not only reinforces learning but also develops communication and teamwork skills. The proposed activities aim to solidify understanding of verb types and their application in different contexts, preparing students to use this knowledge effectively in their written and oral productions.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended to carry out only one of the suggested activities

Activity 1 - Verb in Action: The Great Debate

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Apply theoretical knowledge about types of verbs in a practical debate situation, developing argumentation and verbal expression skills.

- Description: In this activity, students will be divided into groups of up to five members. Each group will receive a different scenario involving the creation of a debate using action verbs, linking verbs, and natural phenomena verbs. The scenarios will include everyday situations such as resolving a conflict at school, describing a natural phenomenon, and explaining an emotional state. Each group will have to create arguments and counterarguments using the corresponding types of verbs and present their debate to the class.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of no more than five students.

  • Distribute the scenarios to each group.

  • Each group should discuss and write arguments using the correct types of verbs.

  • Prepare the debate presentation, considering the sequence of arguments and counterarguments.

  • Conduct a debate in the classroom, where each group will present its arguments, followed by audience questions and answers.

Activity 2 - The Cinema of Verbs

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Develop students' ability to apply verb concepts in an art form (cinema), while fostering creativity and teamwork.

- Description: Students, in groups, will create a short film script that clearly demonstrates the use of action verbs, linking verbs, and natural phenomena verbs. After creation, they will film or present a dramatized reading of the script to the class, highlighting the use of the different types of verbs. This activity aims not only to reinforce the understanding of verbs but also to promote creativity and teamwork.

- Instructions:

  • Organize students into groups of up to five.

  • Each group must create a short script that includes the use of action verbs, linking verbs, and natural phenomena verbs.

  • Groups may choose to film their script or present a dramatized reading to the class.

  • After the presentations, discuss with the class how each type of verb was used and the message conveyed.

  • Promote a vote to elect the most creative and well-executed script.

Activity 3 - Verb Hunt in the Grammar Garden

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Review and consolidate knowledge about the types of verbs through an interactive and collaborative activity.

- Description: In this playful activity, students will participate in a 'treasure hunt' in the classroom, where they must find and classify cards with sentences containing different types of verbs. Each group will receive a map with hints leading them to the hidden cards. After collecting, each group will present their findings and justify the classification of the verbs found.

- Instructions:

  • Prepare in advance cards with sentences containing action verbs, linking verbs, and natural phenomena verbs.

  • Hide the cards around the classroom, following the hints indicated on each group's map.

  • Groups must find the cards and classify the verbs according to type.

  • Each group presents the sentences and justifies why they classified the verbs that way.

  • Discuss the classifications with the class, clarifying any possible doubts.

Feedback

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

The purpose of this stage is to consolidate the learning gained during the practical activities, giving students the opportunity to reflect on their experiences and share insights with the class. This discussion helps reinforce understanding of verb concepts, allows for identifying areas that may need further clarification, and promotes a culture of collaborative learning. Additionally, through the key questions, the teacher can assess students' understanding levels and clarify any remaining doubts.

Group Discussion

After completing the practical activities, gather all students for a group discussion. Start the conversation with a brief introduction, reminding everyone of the importance of verbs in sentence construction and effective communication. Ask each group to share their main discoveries and challenges faced during the activities. Encourage them to explain how they applied the concepts of action, linking, and natural phenomena verbs in their tasks and what they learned from it. Ensure that all groups have the opportunity to speak and that there is a respectful environment for exchanging ideas.

Key Questions

1. What were the main difficulties you faced in classifying the verbs during the activities and how did you manage to overcome them?

2. How can understanding different types of verbs help in writing clearer and more expressive texts?

3. Could you give an example of how you would use action verbs, linking verbs, and natural phenomena verbs in another situation, apart from those proposed in the activities?

Conclusion

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The conclusion stage serves to solidify students' learning, providing a clear and integrated view of the covered content. By summarizing and recapping, the teacher helps students organize their ideas and retain the most important concepts from the lesson. Moreover, by highlighting the connection between theory and practice and the applicability of knowledge in everyday life, this stage reinforces the relevance of the study of verbs in developing essential linguistic skills.

Summary

In the conclusion stage, the teacher should summarize the main points covered about verbs, highlighting their importance as the core of the predicate and differentiating between types of verbs: action, linking, and natural phenomena. It is crucial to recap the definitions and examples given during the lesson, ensuring that all students have a solid foundation for future applications.

Theory Connection

During the class, the connection between theory and practice was established through interactive activities that allowed students to apply theoretical knowledge in practical and creative scenarios, such as debates, script production, and a verb hunt. This approach not only reinforced understanding of the concepts but also demonstrated the relevance of verbs in daily language use.

Closing

Finally, it is essential to highlight the importance of verbs in effective communication, both in writing and speaking. Understanding and correctly using action verbs, linking verbs, and natural phenomena verbs allows students to express their ideas and feelings clearly and precisely, a fundamental skill in various academic and professional situations.
