U. S. History

Contextualization

The United States of America is a nation with a captivating and diverse history, composed of various periods that have shaped the present-day country. Our project aims to explore and understand four key periods in U.S. history: The Age of Exploration, The Revolutionary War, The Civil War, and The Space Race. These periods are significant because they represent crucial turning points that have influenced the nation's identity, power structures, and global relationships.

The Age of Exploration

This period, spanning from the 15th to the 17th century, marked the beginning of European colonization and the transcendence from a world limited to known continents to a global world. The exploration and colonization of the Americas by the Europeans, particularly the British, Spanish, and French, laid the groundwork for the future American nation.

The Revolutionary War

The Revolutionary War, fought from 1775 to 1783, was a struggle for independence from British rule. It instigated a profound transformation in the colonies, leading to the formation of the United States of America and the establishment of principles that still underpin the nation today.

The Civil War

The Civil War, fought from 1861 to 1865, was a devastating conflict that pitted the Northern states (the Union) against the Southern states (the Confederacy) over issues of slavery and states' rights. It was a turning point in the nation's history, ultimately leading to the abolition of slavery and the preservation of the Union.

The Space Race

The Space Race, occurring from the late 1950s to the early 1970s, was a period of intense competition between the United States and the Soviet Union to achieve advancements in space exploration. It not only led to significant scientific and technological achievements but also had profound socio-political implications.

These periods of history are interconnected, and understanding one can shed light on another. The Age of Exploration set the stage for the Revolutionary War, which in turn influenced the events leading up to the Civil War. The aftermath of the Civil War shaped the nation's trajectory, eventually culminating in the Space Race.

To delve into these topics, students can refer to various resources, including:

  1. A Young People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn
  2. Khan Academy's U.S. History course
  3. The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History's online resources
  4. The National Archives' digital collection on U.S. history
  5. The Smithsonian National Museum of American History's website

These resources provide an overview of the topics and can serve as a starting point for further exploration. The project will help students not only gain a deeper understanding of these periods in U.S. history but also develop important skills such as research, collaboration, and critical thinking.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Time Travelers: Exploring the Key Periods of U.S. History"

Objective of the Project:

To promote a comprehensive understanding of U.S. history by examining four key periods: The Age of Exploration, The Revolutionary War, The Civil War, and The Space Race. Students will work in groups to create an informative and engaging presentation that explores the causes, major events, and impacts of each period.

Detailed Description of the Project:

The project consists of two main parts: Research and Presentation. In the research phase, each group will be assigned one of the four periods to investigate. They will use the provided resources as well as any other reliable sources they find to gather information about their assigned period. In the presentation phase, each group will create a digital presentation (using tools like PowerPoint, Google Slides, or Prezi) that covers the key aspects of their assigned period. The presentation should be creative, engaging, and informative, and should include visuals (such as images, maps, or graphs) to enhance understanding.

Necessary Materials:

  • Access to the internet for research
  • Computers or tablets for creating the presentation
  • Digital presentation tools (PowerPoint, Google Slides, Prezi, etc.)
  • Art supplies for creating visuals, if desired (colored pencils, markers, poster boards, etc.)

Detailed Step-by-Step for Carrying Out the Activity:

1. Form Groups and Assign Periods: Divide the class into four groups. Each group will be assigned one of the four periods: The Age of Exploration, The Revolutionary War, The Civil War, or The Space Race.

2. Research: In their groups, students will research the assigned period using the provided resources as well as any other reliable sources they find. They should focus on understanding the causes, major events, and impacts of their assigned period.

3. Presentation Creation: Each group will create a digital presentation that covers the key aspects of their assigned period. The presentation should be creative, engaging, and informative. It should include visuals to enhance understanding.

4. Practice and Review: After creating the presentation, each group should practice presenting it to ensure they are comfortable with the material and the flow of the presentation. They should also review their research to make sure they have a thorough understanding of their assigned period.

5. Presentation: Each group will present their findings to the class. The presentation should be around 10-15 minutes long and should be interactive, encouraging questions and discussion.

Project Deliveries:

At the end of the project, each group will submit their digital presentation along with a written document containing the following sections:

1. Introduction: The students should introduce their assigned period briefly, explain its historical relevance, and state the objectives of their project.

2. Development: This section should include a detailed description of their research process, the key findings, and a step-by-step account of how they created their presentation. They should also discuss any challenges they faced and how they overcame them.

3. Conclusions: Here, the students should summarize the main points they covered in their presentation and explicitly state the learnings they obtained about their assigned period and its significance in U.S. history.

4. Bibliography: The students should list all the resources they used for their research, following a consistent citation format.

The written document should complement the digital presentation, providing a thorough understanding of the student's research, collaboration, and critical thinking skills. It should be structured as a report, with each section clearly delineated and written in an appropriate language for their age group.

The project and the report will be due one week after the groups are assigned their periods. This will give the students enough time to research, create their presentation, practice, and review.
