Use of Natural Resources

Introduction

Hello, little geographers! Today, we are going on a journey through the wonderful world of Natural Resources. They are gifts that nature gives us and that we can use for different purposes, from food to building houses and producing energy. However, it is important to remember that these resources are not infinite and, if we do not take good care of them, they can be depleted. Our job is to discover ways to use them sustainably, that is, in a way that does not harm the environment or future generations.

On our planet, we have different types of natural resources. Some of them are renewable, which means they renew quickly or can be reproduced, such as sunlight, water, and air. Others are non-renewable and take a long time to form, such as oil, coal, and minerals. There are also inexhaustible resources, which are resources that do not deplete, such as solar energy and wind.

Context

Understanding the use of natural resources is essential to understand the relationship between humans and the environment. Every day, we use various natural resources without even realizing it. When we turn on the light, we use electricity, which is mostly generated from non-renewable resources, such as oil and coal. When we eat a fruit, we use a renewable natural resource, but one that needs to be cultivated and cared for so that it does not run out in the future.

Therefore, it is necessary to think of ways to use these resources more intelligently and sustainably. This is what we call environmental awareness. When we are aware of how our actions impact the environment, we can make better and more responsible decisions.

Furthermore, knowledge about natural resources is essential for geography. Geography studies the geographical space, which is formed by natural elements, such as rivers, mountains, and forests, and human elements, such as cities, roads, and industries. Natural resources are an important part of this space because it is from them that we build and transform the world we live in.

So, are you ready to become great explorers of natural resources? Let's go on this adventure together!

Practical Activity: "Explorers of Natural Resources"

Project Objective

The project "Explorers of Natural Resources" aims to involve students in a practical and fun experience about the importance and use of natural resources. Additionally, it seeks to develop socio-emotional skills, such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-solving.

Project Description

In this project, students will become true explorers, investigating and presenting the different types of natural resources, their use, importance, and ways of preservation. The groups will create a "Museum of Natural Resources", where each displayed element will represent a studied natural resource. The exhibition will be held for the class and, if possible, for the school or the community.

Required Materials

  • Notebook and pencil for notes
  • Textbooks, magazines, internet (used under teacher supervision)
  • Cardboards, card paper, or cardboard for panel production
  • Glue, scissors, markers, colored pencils
  • Recyclable materials for the production of displayed elements (for example, bottle caps, toilet paper rolls, shoe boxes, etc.)

Step by Step

  1. Group Formation: The teacher should divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.

  2. Research and Notes: Each group should research about a type of natural resource (for example: water, air, oil, coal, sun, wind, forests, minerals, etc.). They should take notes on information such as: what it is, what it is used for, how it is used, if it is renewable or not, and how we can preserve it.

  3. Museum Planning: The students, together, will plan how the "Museum of Natural Resources" will be. They should think about how they will represent each researched resource, what information to include in each element, and how the presentation to the class will be.

  4. Panel Production: Each group should produce the museum panels. Each panel will represent a natural resource and should contain the researched information. Students can draw, paste pictures, or write, according to what they think is best to represent the resource.

  5. Element Production: In addition to the panels, the groups must produce three-dimensional elements to represent each resource. For example, to represent water, they can make a "river" with blue paper and pebbles, or to represent the sun, they can make a "sun" with yellow paper and cardboard.

  6. Museum Assembly: After production, the groups should assemble the "Museum of Natural Resources" in the classroom. Each resource must be represented by a panel and a three-dimensional element.

  7. Museum Presentation: Finally, each group will present the "Museum of Natural Resources" to the class. They should explain about each resource, its importance, its use, and how we can preserve it.

  8. Evaluation: The teacher will evaluate the students' participation, teamwork, research conducted, creativity in the production of elements, and museum presentation.

Remember, the most important thing is to learn while having fun and collaborating with each other. So, let's get to work, little explorers!
