Contextualization
Hello, class! Let's embark on a journey through time to understand how humans throughout history have worked with nature. Remember that nature is everything that surrounds us: plants, animals, air, water, sun, and earth. It is essential for our survival and for the history of humanity.
Have you ever stopped to think about how our ancestors hunted and gathered food? And how they started to cultivate the land and raise their own animals? Or what were the changes that occurred in the way of working with nature from Antiquity to the present day? In this project, we will explore these and other fascinating questions!
Introduction
Work and Nature Throughout History
Since humans appeared on Earth, they have been working with nature to ensure their survival. Initially, men were hunters and gatherers, that is, they depended on nature to obtain the necessary food to live. Over time, they learned to cultivate the land and raise their own animals, what we call agriculture and livestock.
Our history is marked by important transformations in the way we work with nature. For example, in the Middle Ages, most people lived in small agricultural communities, where agriculture was the main economic activity. In the Industrial Revolution, which began in the 18th century, many people started working in factories, and the relationship with nature changed again.
The Importance of Studying Work and Nature
Understanding how work and nature relate throughout history is very important. It helps us understand how society was organized in different times, how people lived and sustained themselves. Furthermore, it allows us to reflect on how we are working with nature today and how we can do so more sustainably in the future.
Remember, this project is not just about learning historical facts, but about developing skills such as research, communication, creativity, and teamwork. We are excited to see what you will discover and create on this journey! Let's go?
Practical Activity
Activity Title: "The Timeline of Work and Nature"
Project Objective
The objective of this project is to create an illustrated timeline that shows the main changes in the way humans have worked with nature throughout history. Each group will be responsible for a specific period: Prehistory, Middle Ages, Industrial Revolution, and Modern Times.
Additionally, each group must prepare a brief presentation to share the collected information and the illustrations created. This project will help develop research skills, time management, communication, collaboration, and creativity.
Project Description
Each group will prepare a timeline with 5 to 7 important events from their assigned period. These events should be related to work and nature. For example, an event for the Prehistory group could be "discovery of fire and the beginning of food cooking", while for the Industrial Revolution group it could be "invention of the steam engine and the beginning of work mechanization".
Along with the timeline, students must create illustrations for each event. These illustrations can be drawings, collages, or even models. Once completed, the timeline and illustrations will be presented to the class.
Required Materials
- Cardboards or large paper for the timeline
- Colored pens, colored pencils, crayons
- Old magazines, scissors, and glue (for illustrations, if preferred)
- Recyclable materials (for models, if preferred)
- Books and/or internet access for research
Step by Step
-
Group Formation: Form groups of 3 to 5 students. Each group will be responsible for a period of history: Prehistory, Middle Ages, Industrial Revolution, and Modern Times.
-
Research: Research together about the assigned period. Look for information on how people worked with nature at that time. What were their main activities? How did they obtain food and shelter? How did they organize themselves?
-
Event Selection: Within the researched period, choose 5 to 7 important events related to work and nature.
-
Timeline Creation: Use the cardboard or large paper to create the timeline. Place the selected events in chronological order. Remember to include the year or era in which each event occurred.
-
Illustration Creation: For each event on the timeline, create an illustration. Use your creativity and the available materials for this.
-
Presentation Preparation: Prepare a brief presentation for the class. You should explain each event on the timeline and show the corresponding illustration.
-
Presentation to the Class: Present the work to the class. Each group member should participate.
-
Exhibition: At the end of the project, the timelines and illustrations will be displayed in the classroom so that everyone can learn from each group's work.
Remember, the most important thing is to learn and have fun during the process! Good luck, and we look forward to seeing your timelines and hearing your presentations!
