Context
Hello, little mathematicians! Are you ready to embark on an incredible mathematical adventure? Today, we will unravel the secrets of subtraction! Subtraction is a very important mathematical operation that helps us solve problems in our daily lives. When you subtract, you are taking something away from a set, in other words, you are decreasing.
Imagine you have a box full of toys. If you take some toys out of this box, you are subtracting. It's as if you were 'decreasing' the number of toys. Subtraction is used in various situations, such as when counting money, calculating change, measuring time, and many others!
Introduction
Now that we know what subtraction is, we need to learn the basic facts. But what are basic facts? They are like puzzle pieces that we need to know to solve subtraction problems. They are the simplest and most common subtractions that we use most frequently.
The basic facts of subtraction are operations that involve subtracting numbers from 0 to 9. For example, 2 - 1 = 1, 3 - 2 = 1, 4 - 3 = 1, and so on. Knowing these facts, we can solve more complex problems.
You already know how to count to 10, right? So, you already know most of the basic facts of subtraction! Because if you know that 3 + 2 = 5, then you also know that 5 - 2 = 3. This is because subtraction is the inverse operation of addition.
Now, get ready for our learning journey. Let's explore, discover, and of course, have a lot of fun! With subtraction, we will unravel the mysteries of numbers and turn problems into exciting challenges to solve. So, grab your pens, notebooks, and lots of energy, because math is calling! Let's go!
Practical Activity: 'Treasure Hunt of Subtraction'
Project Objective
The objective of this project is to enhance students' knowledge of subtraction and its basic facts through a playful and interactive activity. The proposal is for groups of students to create a 'Treasure Hunt of Subtraction' game where, to progress and find the treasure, they will need to solve subtraction problems.
Project Description
Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, will be challenged to create a 'Treasure Hunt of Subtraction' game. In this game, they will have to solve subtraction problems to advance and find the treasure!
Required Materials
- Cardboard or poster board (for building the board)
- Colorful markers
- Crayons
- Ruler
- Blunt scissors
- Dice (or created by you)
- Game pieces (can be buttons, beans, bottle caps, etc.)
- Paper and pencil (to write down the subtraction problems)
Step by Step
1. Define the theme and draw the board: Together with the group, choose a theme for the game. It can be a treasure map, an enchanted castle, an underwater world, or anything your imagination allows! Draw the board with spaces where players will advance.
2. Create the problem cards: On several sheets of paper, write subtraction problems in a creative way! For example: 'A pirate had 7 gold coins, he gave 3 to his friend. How many coins does he have left?' Make several subtraction problem cards. Remember, the problems should involve the basic facts of subtraction, that is, numbers from 0 to 9.
3. Prepare the game pieces and the treasure: Use buttons, beans, or bottle caps to make the game pieces. You can draw or stick stickers to make them look nicer! For the treasure, use your creativity: it can be a surprise box, a chest, or whatever you want!
4. Assemble the game: Now, with all the pieces ready, assemble the game! Stick the problem cards on some spaces of the board. Distribute the game pieces to each player and place the treasure in a space far from the start of the game.
5. Play and learn: Now it's time to play! Each player, on their turn, rolls the dice and advances on the board. When landing on a space with a problem card, they must solve it correctly to continue. The first one to reach the treasure wins the game!
Remember, the most important thing is to have fun! And at the same time, we are learning more about subtraction and its basic facts. Good luck, little mathematicians, and let the treasure hunt begin!
Delivery Format
Each group must deliver the 'Treasure Hunt of Subtraction' game assembled and ready to play. Additionally, they must provide a list of all the subtraction problems created for the game. This list will be used to assess the students' understanding of the basic facts of subtraction.
