Addition and Subtraction Problems

Practical Activity: 'The Great Math Race'

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to apply the concepts of addition and subtraction in a fun and collaborative game that encourages teamwork, communication, time management, and creative thinking.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 participants. Each group will receive a set of addition/subtraction cards, where each card contains a mathematical problem to be solved by the group. The goal is to solve as many problems as possible within a defined time interval (e.g. 30 minutes).

When solving each problem, students must mark the correct answer on an answer sheet that each group will receive at the beginning of the game. The answer sheets will be collected and evaluated by the teacher at the end of the game.

Materials Needed

  • Addition/subtraction cards
  • Pen or pencil
  • Paper for recording answers
  • Stopwatch

Detailed Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity

  1. Form the groups.
  2. Distribute the necessary materials to each group.
  3. Explain the rules of the game.
  4. Start the stopwatch.
  5. Students begin solving the problems on the cards.
  6. Mark the correct answer on the answer sheet.
  7. Regularly check the remaining time.
  8. At the end of the time, collect the answer sheets for evaluation.

Project Delivery

At the end of the practical activity, each group must write a report addressing the following topics:

  1. Introduction: Brief description of the activity and its relevance to the study of addition and subtraction.

  2. Development: Description of the methodology used to solve the problems. How did they organize themselves? Who did what? What strategies did they use to solve the problems? What difficulties did they encounter and how did they overcome them? What were the results obtained?

  3. Conclusion: What did the group learn from the activity? How did the activity contribute to the understanding of addition and subtraction concepts? What is the importance of teamwork for the project's success?

  4. Bibliography: Indicate the sources consulted to solve the mathematical problems and to prepare the report.

The report must be submitted one week after the practical activity. It will be evaluated considering the correctness of the answers to the mathematical problems, the clarity and coherence of the information presented, the appropriate use of mathematical vocabulary, and the correct citation of the sources consulted.
