Words with More Than One Meaning

Contextualization

Hello, class! Have you ever stopped to think that the words we use every day can have more than one meaning? Incredible, isn't it? This happens because our language, Portuguese, is very rich and full of nuances. And it is precisely about this characteristic that we are going to talk about in this project.

Words with more than one meaning, that is, polysemous words, are very interesting and important for our communication. They help us to bring more clarity to what we want to say and make our speech and writing richer and more expressive. But at the same time, they can also cause confusion if not used correctly. Therefore, it is essential to know and understand the meaning of each of them well.

Introduction

Now, let's delve a little deeper into this fascinating world of polysemous words. Polysemous words are those that have more than one meaning, that is, they can represent different ideas or concepts, depending on the context in which they are used.

For example, the word 'mouth' can refer to the organ of our body through which we eat and speak, but it can also be used to refer to the entrance of a cave, or even to talk about the empty space between two mountains. The word 'point' can mean a graphic symbol used in writing, but it can also refer to a specific place, a particular situation, a mark in a game, among many other meanings.

Now, you must be wondering: 'But how will I know the correct meaning of a polysemous word?'. And the answer is: by the context in which it is used. The context is everything that surrounds us and helps us understand what is being said or written. Therefore, it is very important to observe and understand well the context in which a word is used to know what its correct meaning is.

In the project we are going to carry out, you will have the opportunity to explore and better understand the world of polysemous words. In addition, you will be able to practice skills such as reading, writing, research, creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving. Are you ready? So, let's go!

Practical Activity: 'Exploring the World of Polysemous Words'

Project Objective:

  • Identify and understand polysemous words in different contexts.
  • Develop reading, writing, research, creativity, and teamwork skills.
  • Create an illustrated dictionary of polysemous words.

Project Description:

This project will be developed in groups of 3 to 5 students, and aims to explore the meaning and use of polysemous words in different contexts. Each group will be responsible for creating an illustrated dictionary, where they will present and explain the meaning of 10 polysemous words, using example sentences and illustrations.

Necessary Materials:

  • Notebook and pencil for notes;
  • Access to the internet or books for research;
  • Paper, colored pen, colored pencils or crayons for illustrations;
  • Cardboard or A3 paper for the production of the dictionary;
  • Glue.

Step by Step:

  1. Group Formation: Students must form groups of 3 to 5 participants. Each group will receive a list of 20 polysemous words.

  2. Research: Groups must research the meaning of each word in different contexts. They can use books, dictionaries, research websites, and even talk to older people to understand how these words are used and what they can mean.

  3. Word Selection: Each group must select 10 words from the list to work on. It is important to choose words that they find interesting and that can illustrate the different meanings well.

  4. Definition Development: In a notebook, students must write down the definitions of each word, along with examples of how they can be used in different situations. The examples should help illustrate the different meanings of the word.

  5. Illustration: After writing down the definitions and examples, students must create an illustration for each meaning of the word. The illustrations can be done in the same notebook where the definitions were written, or on separate sheets of paper.

  6. Dictionary Assembly: With all the definitions and illustrations ready, students must assemble the dictionary. They can use cardboard or A3 paper for this. Each word should occupy a page of the dictionary, and the definition and illustrations should be written clearly and legibly.

  7. Presentation: Finally, the groups must present their dictionary to the class. Each student in the group must participate in the presentation, explaining the meaning of the words and the process of creating the dictionary.

Delivery Format: The illustrated dictionary must be submitted to the teacher, and the presentation must be made to the class. The deadline for the project is two weeks from the day the groups are formed.

Remember, the key to success in this project is collaboration and teamwork. Good luck, and have fun exploring the world of polysemous words!
