Impacts of Science

Contextualization

Science is a vast area of study and influences many aspects of our lives. Since the invention of fire, science has played an increasingly important role in the development of humanity. Through science, we can understand how things work, how the world around us functions, and what our role in it is.

In this project, we will explore the impact of science on our daily lives, specifically the impact of medications and other synthetic materials. We will discuss how these innovations have transformed our way of living and understanding the world. Additionally, we will debate the socio-environmental impact that these technologies cause and how we can mitigate them.

Scientific discoveries and technological innovations are crucial for human existence. Imagine a world without medications, without synthetic materials, without the technologies we use every day. It is evident that science has a massive impact on society and our planet. Therefore, it is extremely relevant to understand how these advancements work and what their role is in our world, as well as to recognize their benefits and evaluate their consequences.

To deepen your knowledge and start our discussions, here are some resources you can use:

  1. The importance of science for society - Mundo Educação
  2. The impact of science on society - Colégio web
  3. The impacts of science on society - Escola Kids

Remember: Science is there to be explored, questioned, and discussed. We, as a society, have the responsibility to understand its impacts and seek solutions to the problems it may cause. Let's do this!

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "SciTrek: The Impact of Science"

Project Objective:

Explore and understand the impacts of science on daily life, with an emphasis on the production of medications and synthetic materials. Students should research, discuss, and present a detailed study on the relationship between scientific development, the resulting socio-environmental benefits and impacts.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 students. Each group will be tasked with selecting a medication or synthetic material of their choice and conducting an in-depth study on the topic. The items to be addressed include the history of the chosen product, the impact it has on people's lives and society, the benefits and risks associated with its production and use, and the socio-environmental implications.

Required Materials:

  • Computers with internet access for research.
  • Materials for creating a poster (cardboard paper, colored pens, prints, etc).

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

  1. Group Formation: Form groups of 3 to 5 students. Each group should choose a medication or synthetic material for the study.

  2. Research: Each group should research their chosen topic. The research should include a detailed history of the medication or synthetic material, how it is produced, how it affects people's lives and society, and what socio-environmental impacts are associated with its production and use.

  3. Group Discussion: After the research, each group should discuss what they have learned and how the chosen topic relates to the overall impact of science on society. This discussion should also include generating ideas on how to mitigate possible negative impacts.

  4. Poster Production: Based on the research and discussions, each group should create an informative poster presenting the medication or synthetic material, its advantages, its impacts, and possible solutions for any negative impacts.

  5. Project Presentation: Each group should present their poster and explain their findings to the class.

Project Deliverables:

After completing the practical activity, the group should write a written document reporting on the process and conclusions of the project, which includes:

  1. Introduction: The group should contextualize the theme, explain the relevance of the chosen product and its impact on society, as well as the project's objective.

  2. Development: Students should explain the theory behind the chosen product, describe in detail the research process and creation of the poster, and discuss the results obtained.

  3. Conclusion: The group should conclude the work by revisiting its main points, explaining the learnings obtained, and the conclusions drawn from the project.

  4. Bibliography: Students should indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

The report writing process is an essential part of the activity, as it allows students to reflect on what they have learned and how they have applied that knowledge. Additionally, it provides a written record of the project that can be shared and discussed with others.
