Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Exploring the World of Data: Focus on Graphs and Tables"

Project Objective:

The objective of this project is to apply and deepen the knowledge of different types of graphs and tables and their applications. Each group of 3 to 5 students will be responsible for collecting a set of real data, analyzing it, and representing it using different types of graphs and tables. In addition, students should discuss which representation is most appropriate for their data set and why.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will choose a topic of their preference that can be explored through data, such as sports, weather, health, economy, population, among others. Based on their chosen topic, they should search for a set of real data on the internet or collect it themselves.

With this data in hand, each group should create different graphical representations and tables to present the collected data. Among them, at least one histogram, a bar graph, a pie chart, and a box plot should be presented.

Each group will prepare an oral presentation with slides to show their graphs and tables to the class, explaining their choice for each type of representation and discussing their conclusions from the data.

Required Materials:

  • Internet access for data research
  • Computer with software for data manipulation and graph creation (Excel, Google Sheets, RStudio, etc.)
  • Slide presentation software (PowerPoint, Google Slides, etc.)

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

  1. Group formation (3 to 5 students per group)
  2. Choose the topic for data collection
  3. Research and collect data related to the chosen topic
  4. Create different types of graphs and tables to represent this data
  5. Internal analysis and discussion within the group about which type of graph or table best represents the data
  6. Preparation of an oral presentation to present the graphs, tables, and conclusions
  7. Oral presentation to the rest of the class
  8. Writing a report containing the four topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

Project Deliverables:

At the end of the project, each group must deliver:

  1. The slide presentation they created showing the graphs and tables and explaining their choices and conclusions.
  2. A detailed project report containing:
    • Introduction: explanation of the chosen topic, its relevance and real-world application, and the reason for its choice.
    • Development: detailed explanation of the data collection process, description of each graph and table created, discussion of which representation is most appropriate for their data set and why.
    • Conclusions: a summary of the main results and findings based on the graphs and tables,
    • Bibliography: references to all resources consulted during the project (books, websites, videos, etc.).

Remember, the report should not only present the graphs and tables created but also discuss the reasons for choosing these representations and the conclusions drawn from them. Each group participant should contribute to each part of the report to ensure full collaboration.
