Grammatical Cohesion

Contextualization

Theoretical Introduction

Grammatical cohesion is a fundamental mechanism for the construction of cohesive and coherent texts and discourses. It refers to how the elements of a sentence or discourse connect with each other, ensuring fluency and meaning.

To better understand, we need to first comprehend two essential concepts: the difference between 'cohesion' and 'coherence'. Cohesion is the connection, the relationship, the sense that is established between the words, clauses, and sentences of a text. Coherence, on the other hand, is linked to the understanding, the interpretation of what is read or heard.

Grammatical cohesion can be achieved in various ways, but two of the most common are through the use of pronouns and conjunctions. Pronouns can act as substitutes for names mentioned earlier, maintaining constant reference throughout the text. Conjunctions, on the other hand, allow for the construction of logical relationships between clauses.

Contextualization

We all use grammatical cohesion every day, probably without even realizing it! It is present in social media texts, family conversations, the books we read, and in any environment where written or spoken language is used.

Mastering cohesion is essential for effective communication. It allows us to be understood by others, favors the understanding of complex texts, and can even improve our writing.

To further reflect on the importance of grammatical cohesion, think about situations where you needed to explain a complex thought to someone. By correctly using cohesion elements, you can guide your listener through your reasoning, making it easier for them to understand your point of view.

Practical Activity

Title: 'Text Detectives: Unraveling Grammatical Cohesion'

Project Objective

This activity aims to provide students with a practical and in-depth understanding of grammatical cohesion. They will analyze real texts, identify and explain examples of grammatical cohesion in action. By the end of the project, students should be able to identify and explain various forms of grammatical cohesion and understand the fundamental importance of grammatical cohesion for the fluency and clarity of the text.

Detailed Project Description

Each group of 3 to 5 students will receive a set of texts to analyze. These texts can be extracted from various sources, such as books, newspaper articles, blogs, among others, and should be varied in their themes and styles.

The task for the students is to act as 'Text Detectives', searching for and highlighting examples of grammatical cohesion in the texts. They should note down each example they find, along with an explanation of how this particular example contributes to the fluency and understanding of the text.

Required Materials

  1. Set of texts for each group.
  2. Notebook for notes.
  3. Highlighter pens to emphasize different cohesion elements.

Step by Step

  1. Distribute the texts to each group and explain the task.
  2. The groups should gather and read the text together, looking for examples of grammatical cohesion.
  3. Each example found should be highlighted with colored pens and noted in the notebook, along with an explanation of how this particular case of grammatical cohesion influences the overall understanding of the text.
  4. Students should invest approximately two to four hours in this activity.
  5. After completing the textual analysis, each group should prepare a 10-15 minute oral presentation, discussing their findings and explaining their understanding of grammatical cohesion based on real examples.
  6. In addition to the oral presentation, students must submit a detailed written report containing Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography. This report should describe the theory behind grammatical cohesion, the methodology used in the project, the examples found, and the results of the analysis.

Project Deliverables and Written Document

Students must deliver an oral presentation and a written report. The presentation should address their findings and understanding of grammatical cohesion. The report, in turn, should be a formal and detailed record of the project.

The report should have:

  1. Introduction: A brief summary of what grammatical cohesion is and why it is important. This section should also mention the project's objective and approach.

  2. Development: This section should explain in detail the activities carried out, the methodology used, and the examples of cohesion found.

  3. Conclusions: The students' reflection on their findings. They should summarize what they have learned and how their understanding of grammatical cohesion has deepened through the activity.

  4. Bibliography: In this section, students should list all sources consulted during the project development, including the analyzed texts.

For the report, it is important for students to remember to explain the concept of grammatical cohesion in their own words, provide examples of its use in the analyzed texts, discuss the importance of grammatical cohesion in building coherent discourses, and report how the project contributed to their understanding of the concept.
