Narrative Typology: Short Story Genre

Contextualization

It is with great pleasure that we present the project "Narrative Typology: the short story genre". In our educational journey, we will learn about one of the most popular and captivating narrative genres in literature: the short story. But why are we studying short stories? What are their main characteristics? How do they fit into the broader context of literature and culture in general? Let's find out together.

First and foremost, it is important to understand that literature is a form of cultural expression deeply rooted in human experience. It allows us to explore different aspects of life, society, and humanity, whether by portraying reality or offering escapism through fictional worlds. As one of the briefest and most intense forms of narrative, short stories are like windows to these different universes, allowing us to glimpse the complexity of existence through short yet extremely meaningful stories.

The short story, as a literary genre, has its own set of characteristics and conventions that distinguish it from other types of narrative. It is generally short, focused on a single event or character, and seeks to create an emotional or intellectual impact on the reader through a surprising or revealing ending. Understanding these characteristics will not only allow us to better appreciate the literary works we read but also develop our own writing and critical analysis skills.

In the real world, short stories play a fundamental role in literature and culture in general. They are a popular form of entertainment but are also used as teaching and reflection tools in educational and professional contexts. By studying short stories, we will become familiar with an artistic form that enriches our lives and helps us better understand ourselves and the world around us.

To deepen your knowledge of the short story genre, we suggest the following resources:

We are excited to embark on this literary journey with you. We hope that this project will be a rich and rewarding educational experience, allowing you to explore new horizons and develop valuable skills for a lifetime.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Recreating Tales"

Project Objective:

This project aims to:

  1. Deepen students' knowledge of the literary genre - short story.
  2. Promote critical and comprehensive reading skills.
  3. Stimulate creativity and writing through the recreation of a short story.
  4. Foster teamwork and time management.

Detailed Project Description:

This project will be carried out by groups of 3 to 5 students over the course of one month. The proposal is for the group to select a short story of their interest, conduct a critical analysis of the work, and recreate the short story from a different perspective (for example: from another character, change of setting, or different time period), while maintaining the intrinsic characteristics of the short story genre.

Required Materials:

  • Books, ebooks, or magazines containing short stories
  • Computer with internet access for research
  • Writing programs (Microsoft Word, Google Docs, etc.)
  • Pens, pencils, and paper for initial sketches

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

  1. Group Formation: Form a group of 3 to 5 students who will work together throughout the project.

  2. Short Story Selection: Research and choose a short story of common interest. Libraries or the internet can be used for this research.

  3. Reading and Analysis of the Short Story: Read the chosen short story and conduct a critical analysis, highlighting the characters, plot, setting, point of view, and narrative time.

  4. Recreation of the Short Story: As a group, rewrite the short story from a different perspective. Be creative! Remember to maintain the characteristics of the short story genre.

  5. Revision and Improvement: Review the recreated short story. Ensure that the narrative is coherent and the writing is fluent. Remember that the short story should have a well-defined beginning, middle, and end.

  6. Document Writing: After completing the short story, the group should write a report on the project. This document should include:

  • Introduction: Provide context for the chosen short story, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project.

  • Development: Describe the theory behind the short story genre, explain the activity in detail, indicate the methodology used, and present the recreated short story, justifying the choices made by the group.

  • Conclusion: Summarize the main points, explaining the learnings obtained and the conclusions drawn from the project.

  • Bibliography: Indicate the sources used to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

  1. Project Presentation: Present the work to the class, interpreting the original short story and the recreated one.

Project Deliverables:

At the end of the project, groups must deliver:

  • The original short story chosen.
  • The recreated short story.
  • The written report following the above-mentioned structure.

These deliveries aim to demonstrate the group's understanding of the short story genre, the ability to critically analyze a work, and the skill to recreate a narrative while maintaining its fundamental elements. Additionally, the written report will be a way for students to demonstrate their skills in written communication, organization of ideas, and time management, as the project requires the delivery of several components within a specified deadline.
