Stage Styles

Contextualization

Theatrical styles refer to the type of presentation that is performed on stage, on screen, or in any other visual communication medium. They vary according to historical period, geographical location, and cultural traditions. Some theatrical styles focus on narrative, others concentrate on action, and there are also those that emphasize the visual and the aesthetic.

To fully understand theatrical styles, it is necessary to recognize their origins and evolution over time. From classical Greek drama, through the commedia dell'arte in Renaissance Italy, Asian shadow theater, Elizabethan drama in England, to the avant-gardes of the 20th century, each style has its particularities and nuances that make it unique and characteristic of its time and place.

Importance of Theatrical Styles

Theatrical styles are essential for artistic and cultural expression, as they offer a rich tapestry of techniques, approaches, and traditions for theater creators. In this way, they provide actors, directors, and playwrights with a wide range of options to tell their stories and engage the audience. Additionally, theatrical styles also offer a window into cultures and historical periods, helping us better understand our past and form connections with cultures different from our own.

By studying theatrical styles, students not only expand their knowledge and understanding of theater but also develop transferable skills such as critical analysis, creativity, and the ability to work collaboratively.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: The Journey of Theatrical Styles

Project Objective:

The objective of this project is to have students explore different theatrical styles, understand their characteristics, origins, and impact on the culture and theater of different times and places. Additionally, the activity aims to develop research skills, group collaboration, time management, and presentation skills of the students.

Detailed Activity Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 and must choose a specific theatrical style to research and present to the class. The project should be developed over a week, with an expected dedication of two to four hours per student.

Necessary Materials:

  1. Internet access for research
  2. Presentation materials: can be a PowerPoint presentation, posters, short theatrical piece, etc.
  3. Materials for report preparation: paper, pens, computer for typing, etc.

Step by Step:

  1. Group formation and choice of theatrical style: On the first day, students will form their groups and choose a theatrical style to explore. The choice should be diversified, ensuring that each group chooses a different style.

  2. Research: Students will conduct research on their chosen theatrical style, focusing on aspects such as origin, key characteristics, relevant artists, important works, cultural impact, etc.

  3. Presentation planning: After the research is completed, the groups will plan how they will present their findings to the class. They can choose the format they prefer for the presentation (PowerPoint presentation, posters, short theatrical piece, etc.).

  4. Report preparation: Alongside the presentation preparation, students should write a detailed report of their project, containing: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.

  5. Presentation: At the end of the week, each group will make a 15-minute presentation to the class about the theatrical style they researched.

Deliverables:

  1. Presentation - Students must present their findings to the class in a creative and engaging manner, demonstrating their understanding of the chosen theatrical style.

  2. Report - Each group must submit a detailed report containing the following topics:

    • Introduction: The student must contextualize the theatrical style, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project.

    • Development: The student must explain the theory behind the chosen theatrical style, detail the activity, indicate the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the results obtained.

    • Conclusion: The student must conclude the work by summarizing the main points, explaining the learnings obtained, and drawing conclusions about the project.

    • Bibliography: The student must indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

Remember that the report is an essential component of the project, as it not only complements the presentation but also documents the entire learning process. It should be well-written, clear, and precise, demonstrating a complete understanding of the chosen theatrical style and the work carried out by the group during the week.
