When we talk about the past and the present, we use different ways to refer to things that happened. One of them is counting the years, which helps us understand the order of events and the notion of the age of things. For example, when you talk to your parents or grandparents, they may say that something happened 'a long time ago', but what does that really mean in years? Let's imagine you have a favorite toy that you got for your birthday. If you received this toy on your 4th birthday and you are now turning 7, how many years ago did you get the favorite toy? This question helps us think about the importance of marking time and how each person's growth is linked to the experiences we accumulate throughout life.
