Reactions: Balancing

Medium

(Originais Teachy 2023) - Question Medium of Chemistry

During the process of photosynthesis, the plant uses carbon dioxide and water to produce glucose and oxygen. The simplified chemical equation for this process is: 6CO2 + 6H2O -> C6H12O6 + 6O2. However, when photosynthesis occurs under laboratory conditions, the amount of available carbon dioxide may be limited. Imagine that in an observational experiment, a group of students notices that by reducing the amount of carbon dioxide by half, the production of oxygen is also reduced by half. Based on this observation and considering that the photosynthesis reaction is a global process that involves a series of steps, discuss: (1) How does the reduction of carbon dioxide affect the stoichiometry of the reaction? (2) Explain, from the perspective of the principles of mass conservation and chemical equilibrium, why the production of oxygen is affected in this way when the amount of carbon dioxide is altered.
