Organic Functions: Nomenclature of Phenol

Hard

(Originais Teachy 2024) - Question Hard of Chemistry

Phenol (hydroxybenzene) is an organic compound that has a hydroxyl (OH) group attached to an aromatic benzene ring. Its IUPAC nomenclature is done considering the position of the hydroxyl group in relation to the substituents present in the ring, which can lead to a variety of names for different phenol isomers. In addition, phenol is widely used in the chemical industry, acting as a raw material in the synthesis of resins, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides. Given a compound that has an aromatic ring containing two methyl (CH3) groups and one hydroxyl group, you are asked to identify the correct IUPAC nomenclature for this phenol isomer and explain the process of numbering the ring to determine the name.
a.
1,2-dimethylphenol
b.
2,3-dimethylphenol
c.
3,5-dimethylphenol
d.
1,3-dimethylphenol
e.
2,4-dimethylphenol

In line with what is mentioned in text I, also from the perspective of thermodynamics, non-spontaneous work must be done to combat disorder. Chemical systems that exploit oxidation-reduction reactions can perform spontaneous or non-spontaneous work. Regarding chemical reactions in batteries and in electrolysis processes of aqueous solutions and molten compounds, choose the correct alternative.

The search for alternative and more sustainable energy sources has led to the development of fuels composed of mixtures with ideal combustion characteristics. One of the challenges in this process is the improvement of the energy efficiency of internal combustion engines, which depends, in part, on the uniformity of the fuel mixture. Considering an internal combustion engine, where the efficiency of the fuel burning process is directly related to the homogeneity of the air-fuel mixture, a chemical engineer decides to investigate the behavior of different mixtures under pressure and temperature conditions similar to those found in the combustion chamber. For his analysis, he selects two mixtures: the first one is atmospheric air, mainly composed of nitrogen (78%), oxygen (21%), and other gases in lower concentrations, known to be a homogeneous mixture; the second one is a mixture of ethanol and water, in which ethanol and water form two distinct phases due to their differences in polarity and intermolecular interactions, considered a heterogeneous mixture. Based on the concepts of homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures, which of the two mixtures investigated is more suitable to be used as fuel in an internal combustion engine, considering the goal of maximizing the energy efficiency of the burning process?

It is known that acetone is a type of ketone widely used as a solvent in the industry, mainly for the production of plastics, paints, and varnishes. Furthermore, studies show that its use can pose risks to human health and the environment. Considering the context, answer: a) Describe the general structure of a ketone and what sets it apart from other functional groups. b) Identify and explain some of the risks associated with exposure to acetone for health and the environment. c) Propose individual and collective measures that can be adopted to reduce the negative impacts caused by the responsible use and disposal of acetone.
