Solutions: Solubility

Medium

(Originais Teachy 2023) - Question Medium of Chemistry

In a laboratory, a chemist dissolved 80 g of potassium nitrate (KNO3) in 250 g of water at a temperature of 50°C. Considering the solubility graph of potassium nitrate in water that shows the solute permeability as a function of temperature, and knowing that the solubility of potassium nitrate at 50°C is 106 g per 100 g of water, determine if the solution prepared by the chemist is saturated, unsaturated, or supersaturated. Calculate the amount of solute that can still be dissolved in this solution at 50°C, if the solution is unsaturated.
a.
The solution is unsaturated and can dissolve another 53 g of KNO3.
b.
The solution is unsaturated and can dissolve another 74 g of KNO3.
c.
The solution is saturated and cannot dissolve any more KNO3.
d.
The solution is unsaturated and can dissolve another 20 g of KNO3.
e.
The solution is supersaturated and the excess KNO3 will start to crystallize.
