During the Earth's geological history, the supercontinent Pangaea broke apart, giving rise to the continents we know today. This process of separation and movement of continents is known as continental drift. Scientist Alfred Wegener proposed the theory of continental drift in 1912, suggesting that the land masses moved on the asthenosphere, the outermost and most malleable layer of the Earth's mantle. The theory of plate tectonics, which includes continental drift, was widely accepted after the discovery of mid-ocean ridges and the observation of the distribution pattern of earthquakes and volcanoes. Based on this theory and knowing the current configuration of continents, identify which was the supercontinent that preceded Pangaea and where the name 'Pangaea' originated from.
