(Originais Teachy 2024) - Question Medium of History

During the Absolutism period, several monarchies developed a highly centralized power structure, in which the monarch held absolute authority and ruled based on the theory of divine right. This theory, supported by thinkers like Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet in his book 'Politics Drawn from the Very Words of Holy Scripture', argued that kings ruled by the will of God and were accountable only to Him. In the context of the Absolutism debate in 17th century France, Bossuet stated: 'God establishes kings as His ministers and endows them with a power that is sacred, in order to make His majesty and His will respected in the earthly domains.' (BOSSUET, 1709). Considering the quoted passage and the knowledge about the structures of absolutist monarchies, analyze the function of the monarch within the absolutist system and the way in which this theory justified the concentration of power in the hands of the sovereign.
a.
In the context of Absolutism, the monarch was elected by the nobility and clergy as a whole, limiting his power and subjecting him to a series of restrictions and obligations.
b.
The theory of divine right expressed by Bossuet argued that the monarch's power was granted by the people, who also had the right to depose him if he did not fulfill his obligations.
c.
The theory of divine right justified that the monarch ruled through a social contract, in which the people granted limited powers to the sovereign, who should govern for the benefit of the nation.
d.
Within the absolutist system, the function of the monarch was predominantly ceremonial, with most of the effective power being exercised by the nobility and representatives of the Third Estate.
e.
In the absolutist system, the monarch wielded absolute and centralized power, justified by the theory of divine right, which viewed him as a representative of God on Earth, and ensured the concentration of power and the lack of accountability to other power structures.

During the period known as the 'Revolution of the Modern States', the political fragmentation characteristic of the Middle Ages gave way to centralized structures of power, with monarchs emerging as unifying figures of increasingly defined nations. This process not only reconfigured the political map of Europe but also deeply impacted social and economic organization, transforming the relationship between rulers and the ruled. In 'The Foundations of Power and Wealth', historian Norman Davies states that 'The emergence of modern states was not only the result of political and military forces, but also reflected a change in mentalities and methods of governance.' Considering the context presented and Davies' quote, develop a discursive essay addressing the following points: 1) Explain how the formation of European nation-states altered power dynamics and the political organization of the continent. 2) Discuss the social implications and the new governance paradigm that emerged with the centralization of power in the hands of monarchs and the transition to a more 'national' government.
