In 20th-century Europe, the scenario of economic and political crises served as fertile ground for the emergence of totalitarian regimes characterized by the concentration of power in the hands of a single party or leader, suppression of civil liberties, and the use of propaganda as a tool for social control. Among these, Francoism in Spain and Salazarism in Portugal stood out, both marked by authoritarianism and nationalism. In 'The Nature of Francoism,' historian Carlos Fuentes describes Francisco Franco's regime as 'a classic example of totalitarianism that feeds on the isolation and subordination of civil society to the State.' Considering the interwar European context and Fuentes' statement, analyze how elements such as exacerbated nationalism and political repression were essential instruments in the consolidation and maintenance of the Franco regime in Spain and Salazar in Portugal.
