During the Cold War, the United States developed a foreign policy of supporting anti-communist governments, regardless of whether they were democratic or dictatorial. In Latin America, this was reflected in support for dictatorial regimes, such as in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and others. The military regimes that were established in the region used strategies of social and political control to maintain power, such as censorship, persecution of opponents, and the implementation of repressive legislation. Considering this context, briefly describe a common strategy used by dictatorial regimes for population control and another strategy for controlling political opposition. Then, discuss how US support for these regimes contributed to the consolidation of their power strategies.
