During the transition process of Rome from a monarchy to a republic, various elements of the political and social structure were reformulated. In 'The Republic', Plato discusses the ideal formation of a government, where philosophers, or 'guardians', would be the leaders and govern in the name of the common good. Although the political structure of Rome was based on distinct principles, such as the division of powers and the creation of republican institutions, some see Platonic influences in the formation of the 'Res publica'. Considering the political transformations that occurred in Rome and the elements discussed by Plato, analyze the role of senators in the context of the Roman Republic and discuss possible relationships between Plato's vision and the role of rulers in Ancient Rome, taking into account the ideal of governance and the historical reality of power exercised by the Roman Senate.

The main function of the Roman Senate was to choose the consuls, giving them absolute executive power during the Republic period.

The Roman Senate was responsible for proposing laws, managing public finances, handling foreign policy, and advising elected magistrates, sharing some ideal characteristics for governing, such as experience, civic education, and orientation towards the common good.

Roman senators had no decision-making power and acted only as honorary advisors to magistrates, without active participation in the administration of the State.

The Roman Senate was composed exclusively of plebeians, who represented the majority of the population and had the power to veto decisions of magistrates.

Roman senators were directly elected by the people and could remain in office indefinitely, thus forming a kind of elective aristocracy.
