During the Cold War, the world was divided into two main blocs, the capitalist bloc led by the United States and the communist bloc led by the Soviet Union. This division reflected a series of ideological, economic, and political differences, and tensions between these two blocs led to a series of indirect conflicts, where superpowers supported and influenced other countries in their respective blocs. This phenomenon is known as 'containment' and was a foreign policy strategy of the US to contain the spread of communism, leading to interventions in various countries, such as the Vietnam War and the Korean War. Similarly, the Soviet Union also intervened in countries like Afghanistan and Cuba, supporting communist or anti-imperialist movements. The polarized geopolitical configuration influenced the foreign policy decisions of various countries, which often found themselves forced to choose a side, suffering significant economic and military consequences in case of alignment contrary to the interests of the superpowers.
