With the end of the civil-military dictatorships and the transition to democratic regimes in Latin America, several countries faced significant challenges in their processes of redemocratization, political opening, and economic reforms. In many cases, the new democratic leaders were confronted with the difficult task of balancing demands for social justice and the necessary economic stabilization. The Argentine economist Raúl Prebisch, one of the pioneers of dependency theory, argued that Latin American countries should seek development through industrialization and the promotion of policies that reduce dependence on more developed countries. Considering the post-military dictatorships scenario in Latin America and Prebisch's theoretical approach, analyze the influence of historical, political, and economic factors in the formulation of public policies adopted by governments in the region, aiming to reconcile the pressures for social justice with economic stabilization, and identify current implications of these policies for Latin American society.
