Oral Activities

Once upon a time, in a vibrant high school senior class, a group of eager learners was poised to meet the new challenge set by their English teacher. Today wouldn’t be just another lesson; it would be an immersive experience where their oral English skills would be tested in innovative and engaging ways. The classroom buzzed with excitement, each student armed with their notes and digital gadgets, ready to explore new horizons.

'Good afternoon, everyone! Today, you’re going to become digital influencers, storytellers on social media, and explorers of the metaverse. Are you ready for this adventure?' The teacher’s voice rang out with enthusiasm, a hint of intrigue as if he was about to unveil a new world. With wide eyes and smartphones ready, the students swiftly formed groups, prepared to create and engage across numerous digital platforms.

Their first destination? The land of digital influencers! Each group was assigned the task of crafting a 2 to 3-minute video promoting a fictional product or service entirely in English. On the surface, it seemed straightforward, but they soon realised the intricacy involved. Scripting, selecting the right phrases, and, most importantly, clearly articulating their messages on camera turned out to be quite the challenge. They even watched tutorials on appearing natural on camera and editing their videos like pros, utilising apps such as InShot and iMovie. The classroom transformed into a bustling creative studio.

When it came time for filming, laughter, mishaps, and triumphs filled the air, as each group showcased their best work. There was a noticeable increase in their confidence and fluency in English as the activity solidified vocabulary and grammatical structures they had learned while also preparing them for communication challenges in real life. Ultimately, they shared their videos on a private class social media page, enabling an exchange of constructive feedback.

But their journey was just beginning. With anticipation, our budding adventurers entered the realm of interactive storytelling through Instagram Stories. Dividing into groups, they crafted engaging narratives around everyday scenarios that relied heavily on effective communication in English. Just picture the thrill of role-playing a request for directions, or the hilarity of simulating a tricky purchase in a busy store. Each story posed a question or riddle that invited classmates to engage and reflect, turning the activities into a collective experience rather than just a language exercise.

Students put their creative writing and improvisational skills to the test, learning that weaving compelling stories, even about mundane situations, required more linguistic finesse than they initially thought. They faced challenges and stumbles, but discovered that communication goes beyond simply speaking correctly – it’s about connecting, engaging, and conveying messages clearly.

As they reached the final stage of their adventure, the students were propelled into the metaverse using virtual reality platforms like AltspaceVR. Wearing VR headsets, they navigated simulated environments mirroring real-world situations – from lively cafés to bustling train stations filled with virtual commuters. Here, each interaction demanded practical use of English to seek information, make purchases, or solve everyday problems. The virtual challenges fostered adept improvisation and quick thinking, challenging them to reason and communicate effectively on the spot.

Immersion in this captivating realm was an unforgettable experience. Solving problems, expressing themselves in new environments, and interacting with virtual characters helped the students cultivate the confidence they needed to use English in the real world. After each activity, they took time to reflect, sharing their experiences, fine-tuning strategies, and acknowledging their progress.

At the end of the day, convened in a circle to reflect, each group recounted what they had gained from the activities and how they had bolstered their confidence in using English. Technology served not just as a tool but as a bridge linking their schooling to the global, digital reality all around us. Everyone felt they had achieved significant milestones in their learning journey.

And so, with a sense of pride and new-found assurance, each student left the classroom ready to embrace the world ahead – a world where mastering English communication opens doors to limitless opportunities. And this, dear students, is just the prologue to an exciting learning voyage full of promise.
