Vocabulary: Domestic Animals

Objectives (5 minutes)

  1. Familiarize students with the vocabulary of domestic animals in English, such as dog, cat, bird, fish, and rabbit.
  2. Introduce the correct use of the articles 'a' and 'an' before singular nouns and 's' for plural.
  3. Promote vocabulary practice through fun activities, such as memory games and word searches.

Secondary Objectives

  1. Stimulate social interaction among students, promoting cooperation and mutual respect during group activities.
  2. Develop students' oral expression and listening comprehension through simple dialogues and active listening.
  3. Encourage students' autonomy and self-confidence by actively participating in the proposed activities.

Introduction (10 - 15 minutes)

  1. Reviewing content: The teacher starts the lesson by reminding students about the animals they already know and that have possibly been covered in previous classes. Questions like 'Who here has a pet?' or 'What animals do you see on the street or in the park?' can be asked to engage students in the discussion and spark curiosity about the topic.

  2. Problem situations: The teacher then presents two problem situations to introduce the lesson topic. The first one could be: 'Imagine you were invited to a party at a friend's house and they have many pets. How would you describe these animals to your parents?' The second problem situation could be: 'What if you want to ask your parents for a pet, how would you say that in English?'

  3. Contextualization: The teacher explains that, just like in Portuguese, in English we also use different words to describe different types of animals. To make the lesson more interesting, the teacher can share some curiosities about domestic animals in English. For example, 'Did you know that in English we use 'dog' for cão, 'cat' for gato, and 'fish' for peixe, just like in Portuguese?'

  4. Capturing students' attention: The teacher introduces the lesson topic with an interactive activity. They show students a picture of a dog and ask, 'What is this in English?'. Then, they show another picture, this time of a cat, and ask the same question. The teacher continues this activity by showing images of other domestic animals and encouraging students to say the words in English.

  5. Presentation of objectives: Finally, the teacher presents the lesson objectives, explaining that they will learn many new words in English to describe domestic animals and will practice speaking and writing these words during the lesson.

Development (20 - 25 minutes)

In this stage, the teacher will propose three practical activities to help students consolidate the vocabulary of domestic animals in English. The activities should be chosen according to the class dynamics and the teacher's preference. Below are three activity suggestions, with only one of them being necessary for the lesson development.

  1. Activity: Memory Game of Domestic Animals

The teacher prepares cards with images of different domestic animals on one side and their respective names in English on the other. The cards are spread out with the word side facing down.

    1. Students, divided into groups of up to four members, take turns flipping two cards at a time.
    2. If the cards match, the student collects the cards and continues the turn. If they do not match, the cards are flipped back and the turn passes to the next student.
    3. The game continues until all cards are collected.
    4. At the end, each group presents their cards and says the name of the animal in English, using the correct article (a or an) and the plural form, if applicable.
  2. Activity: Building a Habitat of Domestic Animals in English

In this activity, the teacher organizes students into groups and provides a selection of images of domestic animals and their habitats (for example, a dog house, a fish tank, etc.).

    1. The groups select the images of the animals and their habitats, paste them on a cardboard, and write, in English, the name of the animal and habitat, using the correct article and plural form, if applicable.
    2. After completion, each group presents their work, reading aloud the name of the animal and habitat.
  3. Activity: Word Search of Domestic Animals

The teacher prepares a word search grid with names of domestic animals in English and distributes it to each student.

    1. Students must find the names of the animals in the grid and circle them.
    2. After completion, students dictate the names of the animals found, and the teacher writes them on the board. Then, students must say the names of the animals in English, using the correct article and plural form, if applicable.

The teacher should always monitor the activities, correcting errors and reinforcing concepts when necessary. Upon completing the activities, the teacher should gather the class and consolidate what has been learned, reinforcing the main points and clarifying any remaining doubts.

Feedback (10 - 15 minutes)

  1. Group Discussion (5 minutes): The teacher gathers all students and gives each group the opportunity to share the answers or solutions they found during the activities. This allows students to learn from each other and allows the teacher to clarify any doubts that arose during group work. The teacher should encourage students to explain how they arrived at their answers, promoting reflection and critical thinking.

  2. Connection to Theory (5 minutes): After the group discussion, the teacher reviews the main theoretical points covered in the lesson. For example, they can ask: 'How many types of articles do we use before a noun in English?' and 'How do we use 's' to form the plural of nouns?'. The teacher should reinforce that learning is not limited to practical activities but also involves understanding the why and how to apply that knowledge in different situations.

  3. Individual Reflection (3 - 5 minutes): The teacher suggests that students reflect on what they learned in the lesson. For this, they can ask two simple questions:

    • 'What was the most fun part of today's lesson and why?'
    • 'What pet would you like to have and why?'

These questions not only encourage students to think about the lesson content but also give them the opportunity to express their opinions and feelings. The teacher should remind students that all answers are valid and that the important thing is to reflect on what was learned.

  4. Teacher's Feedback (2 - 3 minutes): The teacher concludes the lesson by giving overall feedback on the students' performance. They can praise everyone's effort and active participation, highlight the strengths observed during the activities, and suggest areas for improvement. The teacher should always maintain a positive and encouraging tone, reminding students that learning is a continuous process and that the most important thing is to be willing to learn and make an effort.

This feedback stage is crucial to consolidate learning, allow students to see the progress they have made, and identify any remaining difficulties. Additionally, it promotes self-reflection and self-assessment, skills that are essential for autonomous learning and building self-confidence.

Conclusion (5 - 10 minutes)

  1. Lesson Summary (2 - 3 minutes): The teacher begins the conclusion by recapping the main points covered during the lesson. For example, they can review the names of domestic animals in English that were learned, as well as the correct way to use the articles 'a' and 'an' and 's' to form the plural of nouns. The teacher should emphasize that learning new vocabulary is a gradual process and that it is normal to take some time to become familiar with new words.

  2. Connecting Theory to Practice (2 - 3 minutes): The teacher then explains how the practical activities carried out in the classroom helped reinforce the understanding of the theory. They can mention, for example, how the Memory Game allowed students to associate the names of animals with their images, while the Habitat Building activity and the Word Search required students to apply the concepts learned in a creative way. The teacher should emphasize that learning a new language is not just about memorizing words but also about knowing how to use them correctly in different contexts.

  3. Extra Materials (1 - 2 minutes): The teacher suggests some extra materials for students to continue practicing what they learned at home. These materials may include interactive online games, language learning apps, English picture books about animals, among others. For example, the teacher can recommend the website 'Funbrain' (www.funbrain.com) which offers a variety of educational games in English for children.

  4. Importance of the Subject (1 - 2 minutes): Finally, the teacher highlights the importance of learning about domestic animals in English. They explain that, besides being useful for everyday communication, basic vocabulary knowledge in English is a solid foundation for learning more advanced levels of the language. Additionally, the teacher can mention that studying a second language helps develop cognitive skills, such as problem-solving and mental flexibility, and to understand and appreciate different cultures.

  5. Closure (1 minute): The teacher concludes the lesson by thanking everyone for their participation and effort and reinforcing that students can always seek help if they have any doubts. They also encourage students to continue exploring the world of domestic animals in English and to practice what they have learned in their daily activities.
