Necessary MaterialsVarious fabrics, Coloured paper, Various magazines, Stickers, Face paints, Other collage materials, Materials for creating sets and costumes (cardboard, fabric, etc.), Materials for painting and sculpture (brushes, paints, clay, etc.)

Premises: This Active Lesson Plan assumes: a 100-minute class duration, prior student study both with the Book and the beginning of Project development, and that only one activity (among the three suggested) will be chosen to be carried out during the class, as each activity is designed to take up a large part of the available time.

Objective

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The Objectives stage is crucial for establishing the direction of the lesson. By clearly laying out what learners are expected to grasp, this section ensures that following activities align with the intended learning outcomes. The objectives highlight both theoretical understanding and practical skills, ensuring that learners can not only comprehend but also communicate about the theme of artistic creation.

Objective Utama:

1. Enable learners to identify and describe the means of production and key characteristics of artistic creation across its various forms.

2. Enhance oral and visual presentation skills, allowing learners to effectively communicate what they’ve discovered about artistic creation.

Introduction

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

The Introduction stage aims to engage learners with content they’ve previously explored and contextualise the significance of the theme in their lives and society. The problem-based situations activate prior knowledge and stimulate critical thinking, while contextualisation underscores the practical and historical relevance of art, setting the stage for hands-on activities in the classroom.

Problem-Based Situation

1. Picture this: a renowned international museum is gearing up for an exhibition on the evolution of art across different cultures. They've reached out to learners to showcase a visual project that embodies the fusion of artistic styles from two distinct cultures. How could they leverage their insights on means of production and artistic characteristics to craft a standout presentation?

2. Imagine learners entering a local art competition, tasked with presenting a piece that touches on a significant social theme. How could they merge modern and traditional artistic techniques to craft a powerful message, considering the characteristics and means of production they’ve studied?

Contextualization

Art permeates every aspect of our lives—from the paintings we admire in galleries to motion graphics in films, and even the product designs we engage with daily. This myriad of artistic expressions mirrors the cultural and historical richness of our societies. For instance, the application of colour and form in African art often carries deep meanings rooted in traditions and beliefs, whereas European Impressionism employs quick brushstrokes and vivid colours to capture the essence of a moment.

Development

Duration: (65 - 75 minutes)

The Development stage allows learners to apply their understanding of artistic creation in practical and creative ways. By working in groups, they’re encouraged to collaborate, share ideas, and solve challenges together. Each activity aims to solidify learning about means of production and artistic characteristics, while also developing communication and presentation skills vital for academic and career success.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended that only one of the suggested activities be carried out

Activity 1 - The Great Cultural Collage

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Cultivate creativity and understanding of the fusion of artistic styles from various cultures, applying prior knowledge about means of production and artistic characteristics.

- Description: Learners will be challenged to create a collage representing the fusion of diverse artistic styles from around the globe. Using materials like fabric, coloured paper, magazines, and stickers, learners should apply collage techniques to produce a work that integrates elements of abstract, realistic, and traditional art from at least three different cultures.

- Instructions:

  • Form groups of up to 5 learners.

  • Distribute collage materials such as fabric, paper, magazines, and stickers to each group.

  • Encourage each group to select three distinct cultures for inspiration and conduct quick research on the dominant artistic styles in those cultures.

  • Guide learners to create a collage reflecting the fusion of these styles using at least three different collage techniques.

  • Each group should prepare a brief presentation explaining their design choices and the means of production used in their collage.

Activity 2 - Colour Drama: An Artistic Play

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Explore the effect of colours on artistic and cultural communication, enhancing understanding of diversity and cultural significance.

- Description: In this activity, learners will create a short theatrical piece that delves into the importance of colours in art and culture. Each group will represent a scene illustrating how different cultures utilise specific colours to express emotions or convey messages. Learners may use fabric, face paint, and other materials to design their costumes and sets.

- Instructions:

  • Organise learners into groups of up to 5.

  • Discuss the significance of colours in art and culture, highlighting how various cultures associate colours with emotions or meanings.

  • Each group must choose a scene to dramatise, focusing on the use of colours to convey messages.

  • Learners should prepare their scripts, costumes, and sets, considering the creative use of colours.

  • At the conclusion, each group will present their scene, followed by a brief discussion on their colour choices and how these influence audience perception.

Activity 3 - Living Art Gallery

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Encourage appreciation of art as a form of cultural and historical expression, while fostering curatorial and presentation skills.

- Description: Learners will transform the classroom into an interactive art gallery, showcasing their artistic creations. Each group will choose a cultural or historical theme and create various works, including paintings, sculptures, or installations, for display. Visitors (other learners and teachers) will engage with the artworks and hear explanations from the creators about the techniques and inspirations behind their work.

- Instructions:

  • Separate learners into groups of up to 5.

  • Each group selects a cultural or historical theme for their artworks.

  • Learners must produce different types of art to form their gallery using a variety of materials.

  • Prepare the classroom for the exhibition by organising each group’s works into distinct stations.

  • Invite other classes or teachers to visit the gallery and engage with the students' presentations about their creations.

Feedback

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

This stage seeks to reinforce learners' practical learning, allowing them to voice and reflect on the knowledge gained. Group discussion provides the opportunity to compare experiences and insights, fostering a deeper and more critical comprehension of artistic creation and its practical implications. It also serves to evaluate the effectiveness of the activities in achieving the set learning goals.

Group Discussion

Kick off the group discussion with a short recap of the activities undertaken, focusing on how each group approached blending artistic styles and the significance of colours in art and culture. Invite learners to share the challenges they faced and the innovative solutions they devised during the activities. Ask how they integrated their prior knowledge about means of production and artistic characteristics into their creations.

Key Questions

1. What were the main hurdles in attempting to merge artistic styles from different cultures in your creations?

2. How did the colours utilised in the activities aid in conveying specific emotions or messages?

3. In what ways did understanding means of production and artistic characteristics shift your approach to creating your works?

Conclusion

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The Conclusion stage aims to solidify learning by connecting discussed points and undertaken activities with the applicability of acquired knowledge. This moment is vital for learners to contemplate the importance and integration of art in their lives while reinforcing their understanding of how learned theory is manifested in practice. The Conclusion also helps reinforce learners' memory of the covered content and lays the groundwork for future applications of artistic knowledge.

Summary

In wrapping up the lesson, the teacher should summarise and reflect on the main points covered regarding artistic creation, focusing on production techniques, key features, and the cultural and historical relevance of the activities engaged in. It's essential to reinforce how the fusion of artistic styles and the application of colours can be creatively and meaningfully applied in various settings.

Theory Connection

Throughout the lesson, learners engaged in practical activities such as making collages, dramatizations, and exhibitions, enabling them to experience and theoretically apply the knowledge acquired about artistic creation. These practical experiences helped reinforce theoretical understanding, highlighting the interconnection between theory and practice in art.

Closing

Finally, the teacher should stress the significance of artistic creation in everyday life, showcasing how the ability to express ideas and emotions through diverse artistic means is crucial for developing a critical and sensitive worldview. This reflection aids learners in perceiving art not merely as a study subject but as a powerful communication and expression tool.
