Premises: This Active Lesson Plan assumes: a 100-minute class duration, prior student study both with the Book and the beginning of Project development, and that only one activity (among the three suggested) will be chosen to be carried out during the class, as each activity is designed to take up a large part of the available time.

Objective

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

This section aims to guide students in grasping important elements related to the topic 'Globalized World and Migration Flows'. Through these objectives, students will focus on vital aspects such as the reasons behind migration and its impacts on today's world, along with honing their analytical skills to assess responses and solutions to these challenges. Clear objectives are essential for students to apply their acquired knowledge effectively and prepare for discussions at home as part of the flipped classroom approach.

Objective Utama:

1. Help students understand how a globalized world influences migration flows, while analyzing the reasons and effects of these movements.

2. Cultivate critical thinking skills in students to evaluate the responses and solutions put forward to tackle the challenges arising from migration flows in a globalized context.

Objective Tambahan:

  1. Encourage lively discussions on the link between globalization and migration, and how it influences social, economic, and political dimensions.

Introduction

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

This introduction aims to engage students with the material studied at home, utilizing real-life problem scenarios that encourage practical application of knowledge. The contextualization connects the topic to current events, boosting student interest and enhancing their understanding of why studying migration flows in a globalized world is crucial. This sets the stage for a deeper and more analytical discussion during classroom sessions.

Problem-Based Situation

1. Imagine you're a political leader in a developed nation grappling with high immigration rates. How would you find a balance between enforcing stricter immigration policies and upholding humanitarian obligations?

2. Think about a small village that is welcoming a surge of immigrants. What immediate and long-term social and economic effects would arise, and what solutions would you propose to manage these immigration flows?

Contextualization

Studying migration flows in a globalized world goes beyond theory; it's a pressing reality affecting millions globally. For instance, the refugee crisis in Europe showcases how ineffective immigration policies can lead to severe humanitarian and political challenges. Additionally, labor migration to developed nations not only impacts these economies but also their countries of origin, establishing a complex web of interdependencies.

Development

Duration: (70 - 75 minutes)

The Development phase is intended for students to actively apply their prior knowledge about global migration in an interactive format. The activities aim to deepen understanding of the real challenges tied to migration, while promoting critical thinking, negotiation, strategic planning, and collaborative skills. Working in groups also enhances communication and teamwork skills, which are vital for addressing modern social issues.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended that only one of the suggested activities be carried out

Activity 1 - Migration Diplomacy: The Continental Game

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Enhance negotiation and diplomacy skills in the context of global migration, while allowing for better insights into the complexities of migration flows and the various perspectives involved.

- Description: Students will form groups each representing a different continent. They must devise a strategy covering political, economic, and social dimensions to manage hypothetical migration flows, taking into account both their continent's interests and the migrants' needs, simulating the process of agreement signing and policy implementation.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into five groups, with each group representing a different continent.

  • Give each group a brief overview of the migration challenges their continent faces.

  • Groups will have 30 minutes to develop a strategy and prepare a presentation.

  • Each group will present their strategy, explaining their decisions and the anticipated outcomes.

  • After the presentations, facilitate a debate among the groups to enable peer questioning and learning.

Activity 2 - Building Bridges: An Integration Project

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Encourage critical and creative thinking on how cities can adapt to the cultural richness brought by immigration, while fostering cooperation and teamwork.

- Description: In this activity, students, working in small groups, will assume the roles of urban planners and sociologists. They will create a model city that is inclusive and welcoming to immigrants, incorporating urban, social, and economic solutions.

- Instructions:

  • Organize students into groups of up to 5 members.

  • Inform them they will design a model city specifically accommodating immigrants.

  • Groups should consider urban, social, economic, and cultural solutions to aid immigrant integration.

  • Each group will have 45 minutes to develop the project and prepare the presentation.

  • Finally, each group will present their model city and explain how it tackles the challenges of migration.

Activity 3 - Refugee Crisis: A Historical Simulation

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Foster understanding of the practical and ethical dilemmas encountered by different stakeholders in a refugee crisis, building empathy and conflict resolution skills.

- Description: Students, divided into groups, will represent various stakeholders in a historical refugee crisis. They will negotiate solutions while considering political, economic, and humanitarian factors to simulate a positive resolution.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of up to 5 students, where each group represents a different stakeholder in the selected refugee crisis (e.g., government of the origin country, government of the host country, NGOs).

  • Provide each group with relevant information on their interests and available resources.

  • Groups will have 60 minutes to negotiate and strive for a satisfactory agreement for all parties.

  • Each group will present the outcomes of their negotiations and discuss the challenges faced during the simulation.

  • Encourage a class discussion about the various strategies employed and potential alternative approaches.

Feedback

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

The aim of this feedback session is to solidify learning by allowing students to articulate and reflect on their experiences and the solutions discussed during the activities. This dialogue helps reinforce their understanding of the challenges posed by migration flows and underscores the importance of embracing diverse perspectives. Additionally, it provides the teacher with insights into students' comprehension and identifies areas that may require further attention.

Group Discussion

At the conclusion of the activities, facilitate a group discussion with all students. Start the dialogue with a brief introduction: 'Having explored various perspectives and solutions to migration challenges, let's take a moment to reflect on and share what we have learned. How can the solutions proposed by different groups be implemented in reality, and what practical barriers might we face?'

Key Questions

1. What were the main challenges your group encountered while attempting to implement solutions for migration flows?

2. How can the solutions mentioned in your activity be tailored to address the actual migration issues we see today?

3. What additional skills or knowledge do you think you would need to develop to tackle issues of migration and globalization effectively?

Conclusion

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The purpose of the conclusion is to anchor learning, ensuring that students have comprehended and internalized the crucial concepts from the lesson. Reviewing the main topics aids in reinforcing information retention, and discussing the application of this knowledge in real-world contexts promotes appreciation of the subject and its significance for students’ holistic development.

Summary

To wrap up the class, the teacher should summarize and revisit the key points discussed concerning the Globalized World and Migration Flows. It is vital to re-emphasize the causes, effects, and potential solutions to migration-related challenges, while also highlighting the varied approaches explored in practical activities.

Theory Connection

Throughout the lesson, a clear connection was established between theory and practice through activities that simulated the real-life contexts of migration and globalization. This teaching method enabled students to apply theoretical concepts in practical situations, enhancing their understanding and retention of the material.

Closing

Lastly, it’s essential to stress the importance of studying migration flows and globalization as they pertain to everyday life. Understanding these trends not only deepens students' academic knowledge but also prepares them to be informed and critical citizens in an increasingly interconnected world.
