Required Materialsenvelopes with text excerpts, current news segments, materials for creating literary works, projector for presentations, papers and pens, computers or tablets (optional)

Assumptions: This Active Lesson Plan assumes: a 100-minute class, prior student study with both the Book and the start of Project development, and that only one activity (among the three suggested) will be chosen to be conducted during the class, as each activity is designed to take up a significant portion of the available time.

Objectives

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The Objectives stage is crucial for establishing a clear foundation on what students should focus on and achieve during the class. By clearly stating the objectives, students will be able to direct their efforts and attention not only to understand how to interpret texts but also to the importance of reading as a means of information and personal development. This stage serves to align expectations and ensure that everyone is aware of the learning goals.

Main Objectives:

1. Empower students to understand the objectives of reading, allowing them to interpret everyday texts critically and effectively.

2. Develop the ability to recognize reading as an essential tool for gaining information and acquiring knowledge.

Side Objectives:

  1. Encourage critical thinking and detailed analysis in group discussions about the texts read.

Introduction

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

The introduction serves to engage students and bridge the gap between prior knowledge and the content that will be explored more deeply in the class. Through problem situations, it stimulates critical reflection on how reading applies in everyday life and in complex situations, preparing the ground for more meaningful learning. The contextualization helps to situate the importance of the topic in real life, increasing interest and awareness of the relevance of reading.

Problem-Based Situations

1. Imagine you need to explain the main news from your country to a foreign friend using only a weekly magazine. How would you select the most important information?

2. Think of a situation where you are a detective who needs to solve a complex case. The only clues are excerpts from different books found at the crime scene. How could the ability to correctly interpret these texts help you solve the case?

Contextualization

Reading is a fundamental skill that allows us not only to acquire information but also to connect different ideas and contexts. For example, the ability to interpret texts directly impacts our ability to make informed decisions, whether when voting, choosing products, or forming opinions on social issues. Additionally, stories of great readers, such as Abraham Lincoln, who attributed their success to the habit of reading, can inspire and demonstrate the importance of reading in personal and professional development.

Development

Duration: (70 - 75 minutes)

The Development stage is designed to allow students to apply and deepen their understanding of the objectives of reading through practical and collaborative activities. By participating in one of the proposed activities, students will have the opportunity to work in teams, utilize their interpretation and analysis skills, and reflect on the importance of reading in various contexts. This stage is essential to transform theoretical knowledge into practical skills, also encouraging creativity and critical thinking.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended to carry out only one of the suggested activities

Activity 1 - Reading Detectives

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Develop text interpretation and critical analysis skills, promoting teamwork.

- Description: Students will be divided into groups, and each group will receive mysterious envelopes containing excerpts from different literary genres (fiction, journalism, science, etc.). They must use their interpretation skills to discover the hidden theme that connects all the excerpts. Each envelope will also include additional clues to help solve the mystery.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of up to 5 students.

  • Distribute the mysterious envelopes to each group.

  • Each group reads the excerpts and discusses the possible connections between them, using the provided clues.

  • Present their conclusions and justifications to the class.

Activity 2 - News Builders

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Foster understanding of textual structure and the importance of context in interpreting news.

- Description: In this activity, student groups will receive random segments of different current news stories. The challenge will be to assemble a coherent narrative that makes sense using all the segments. At the end, each group will present their 'news' and discuss how the order of information and context influence the reader's interpretation.

- Instructions:

  • Organize students into groups of up to 5 participants.

  • Hand each group a set of news segments.

  • Groups must arrange the segments to form a logical and coherent narrative.

  • Each group presents their news and reflects on the impact of the information structure.

Activity 3 - Literary Festival

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Stimulate creativity, understanding of different literary genres, and ability to express and argue.

- Description: Students, organized in groups, will choose a literary genre and create a small work (short story, poem, article) to be presented in the form of a 'literary festival' in the classroom. Each group will explain the creative process, the literary techniques used, and the purpose of reading their text.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of up to 5 students, each group chooses a literary genre.

  • Groups create a small literary work, considering the characteristics of the chosen genre.

  • Prepare a presentation explaining the creative process and techniques used.

  • Hold a 'literary festival' where each group presents their work and explanation.

Feedback

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

The aim of this section is to consolidate the learning acquired during the practical activities and allow students to reflect on the importance and applicability of the objectives of reading in various contexts. This discussion not only reinforces knowledge but also promotes communication, critical thinking, and reflection skills among students, essential for academic and personal development.

Group Discussion

Start the group discussion with a brief introduction, highlighting the importance of sharing learnings and perspectives. Encourage each group to present their findings and lessons learned during the activities. Ask them to comment on how the exercises changed or reinforced their understanding of the objectives of reading. Ensure that each group has enough time to express their ideas and that there is an open space for questions and comments among the groups.

Key Questions

1. How did the activity help improve your text interpretation skills?

2. In what ways can you apply what you learned today in your academic or personal life?

3. What was the biggest challenge encountered during the activity and how did you overcome it?

Conclusion

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The conclusion aims to synthesize the content learned, reinforcing the connection between the theory studied and the practices carried out during the class. This stage also serves to reiterate the importance of reading and textual interpretation in students' daily life, encouraging them to apply the skills developed in their daily lives.

Summary

Summarize the main points covered on the objectives of reading, highlighting the importance of interpreting texts in different formats and contexts. Recap how activities such as 'Reading Detectives' and 'News Builders' applied these concepts practically.

Theory Connection

Explain how the lesson integrated theory and practice, demonstrating through the proposed activities how the theory of text interpretation and analysis manifests in everyday life, preparing students to face real challenges of comprehension and critique.

Closing

Highlight the relevance of reading and text interpretation in students' daily lives, emphasizing how these skills are essential for academic, professional, and personal success. Stress the importance of continuing to develop these competencies throughout life.
