Objectives

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

The purpose of this stage is to allow students to clearly understand the objectives of the lesson, providing an initial understanding of the importance of recognizing language and speech in different contexts. In addition, this stage aims to prepare students to reflect on their own emotions and personal experiences related to the topic, promoting a socio-emotionally enriching learning environment.

Main Goals

1. Recognize language as a system of linguistic signs specific to a community of speakers.

2. Understand language as a communication system that includes linguistic variations.

3. Develop self-knowledge and self-control skills by exploring emotions related to the use of language and its variations.

Introduction

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

Emotional Warm-up Activity

Deep Breathing for Focus

The Deep Breathing activity is a relaxation technique that helps promote students' focus, presence, and concentration. Through slow and deep breaths, students can reduce stress and anxiety, allowing them to focus better during the lesson and be more present in the moment.

1. Ask students to sit comfortably in their chairs, with their backs straight and feet flat on the floor.

2. Explain that the activity involves taking slow, deep breaths to help focus and relax.

3. Ask students to close their eyes, if comfortable, and place one hand on their abdomen and the other on their chest.

4. Instruct students to inhale deeply through their noses, feeling their abdomen expand while filling their lungs with air (count to 4 for the inhale).

5. Ask students to hold their breath for a moment (count to 2).

6. Guide them to exhale slowly through their mouths, feeling their abdomen contract as the air is expelled (count to 6 for the exhale).

7. Repeat the deep breathing cycle for about 5 minutes, encouraging students to focus only on their breath and the movement of their abdomen.

8. After the activity, ask students to open their eyes and share, if they wish, how they feel after the deep breathing practice.

Content Contextualization

Language and speech are fundamental elements of our daily communication, influencing how we express ourselves and how we understand others. In different regions and social contexts, linguistic variations reflect cultural diversities and individual experiences. For example, the same language can have different accents, slang, and expressions in different parts of the country. Understanding these variations not only enriches our linguistic knowledge but also helps us develop empathy and respect for the different expressions of people.

When exploring the theme of Language, Speech, and Linguistic Varieties, it is important to remember that the way we communicate can evoke various emotions, both in ourselves and in others. Recognizing and understanding these emotions can help us communicate more effectively and respectfully, fostering an environment of mutual understanding and harmony.

Development

Duration: (60 - 75 minutes)

Theoretical Framework

Duration: (20 - 25 minutes)

1. ### Main Components of the Topic: Language, Speech, and Linguistic Varieties

2. 1. Language and Speech:

3. Language: A system of linguistic signs used by a community of speakers for communication. Examples: Portuguese, English, Spanish.

4. Speech: The human ability to communicate ideas, feelings, and thoughts through a system of signs. It includes not only spoken and written language but also gestures, signs, and symbols. Example: Body language, Brazilian Sign Language.

5. 2. Linguistic Variations:

6. Regional Variety (Dialects): Differences in the spoken language in different geographic regions. Example: Northeastern accent versus Southern accent in Brazil.

7. Social Variety (Sociolects): Differences in the spoken language among different social groups. Example: Slang used by youth compared to formal language used in professional settings.

8. Situational Variety (Registers): Differences in language according to context or situation. Example: Formal language in a job interview versus informal language in a conversation with friends.

9. 3. Importance of Linguistic Sensitivity:

10. Recognizing and respecting linguistic variations is fundamental to promoting inclusion and mutual understanding. Example: Avoiding linguistic prejudices and valuing the cultural diversity expressed through language.

11. 4. Examples and Analogies:

12. Example: Consider how a speaker from Rio de Janeiro may use different expressions than a speaker from São Paulo. These differences enrich the language and reflect cultural diversity.

13. Analogy: Language can be compared to a wardrobe full of varied clothes (linguistic variations), where each piece has its appropriate moment and context for use.

Socioemotional Feedback Activity

Duration: (35 - 45 minutes)

Exploring Linguistic Variations in Practice

Students will work in groups to identify and analyze different linguistic variations present in texts, audios, or videos, highlighting how these variations reflect cultural and social diversity. Additionally, they will reflect on the emotions that these variations may evoke in different contexts.

1. Divide the class into groups of 4 to 5 students.

2. Distribute different materials (texts, audios, videos) that contain regional, social, and situational linguistic variations.

3. Ask the groups to identify the linguistic variations present in the material and take notes on their observations.

4. Guide students to discuss how these variations reflect cultural and social diversity.

5. Request that each group shares their observations with the class, highlighting specific examples and their reflections on the emotions that linguistic variations may evoke.

6. During the presentations, encourage students to recognize, understand, name, express, and regulate the emotions perceived.

Group Discussion

To guide the group discussion, use the RULER method. Start by asking students to Recognize the emotions they felt when listening to or reading the different linguistic variations. Encourage them to think about how these linguistic variations can positively or negatively affect their emotions and perceptions.

Next, ask students to Understand the causes of these emotions. Why do certain linguistic variations evoke specific feelings? Discuss in groups the possible emotional and social consequences of using or hearing different linguistic variations.

During the discussion, help students Name the emotions they are feeling accurately. Examples: curiosity, strangeness, empathy. Encourage them to Express their emotions appropriately, using respectful and constructive language. Conclude the discussion by helping students to Regulate their emotions, developing strategies for dealing with negative feelings and promoting more empathetic and effective communication.

Conclusion

Duration: (20 - 25 minutes)

Emotional Reflection and Regulation

To reflect on the challenges faced during the lesson and how students managed their emotions, the teacher may request that students write a paragraph or participate in a group discussion. Students should address the following points: What were the main challenges encountered when dealing with linguistic variations? How did they feel when recognizing and discussing these variations? What strategies did they use to regulate their emotions during the group activity? Encourage students to be honest and to reflect on their own experiences and emotions.

Objective: The objective of this subsection is to encourage self-assessment and emotional regulation for students, helping them to identify effective strategies for handling challenging situations. By reflecting on their emotions and experiences, students can develop greater self-understanding and improve their self-knowledge and self-control skills, applying these lessons in the context of linguistic variation and other aspects of their lives.

Closure and A Look Into The Future

At the end of the lesson, the teacher can set personal and academic goals related to the content covered. Ask students to establish at least one personal goal and one academic goal to continue developing their linguistic and emotional skills. For example, a personal goal might be to practice empathy and respect when encountering different linguistic variations. An academic goal might be to deepen knowledge about linguistic variations in different social and regional contexts. Encourage students to write down these goals and reflect on their progress over time.

Possible Goal Ideas:

1. Practice empathy when hearing different linguistic variations.

2. Respect different forms of linguistic expression.

3. Deepen knowledge about regional and social linguistic variations.

4. Develop effective communication skills in different contexts.

5. Promote inclusion and mutual understanding through linguistic sensitivity. Objective: The objective of this subsection is to strengthen students' autonomy and the practical application of learning, aiming for continuity in academic and personal development. By setting clear and achievable goals, students can become more proactive in their own learning and development, applying the lessons about linguistic variations and emotional regulation in their daily lives.
